    A mate threw it to me when I was a teenager saying "I think you will like this" he was so right, he died there a few years ago and whenever something comes up about the saga I think of him, a great bloke. I'm 55 now, and back in the day before we were saturated by media, reading was our UA-cam, netflix, the internet ETC, certain books became an event in your life, and you would meet someone who read the same books and strike an instant rapport on discussing those books, LOTR, Hitchhiker series, the magician series and many more, but for me, Dune was the best of them, I've reread them a few times and the older I got I have come to realise 'God Emperor of Dune' is his greatest work, this is what he was leading to say.

    Never read books, there wasn’t a single work of fiction I read in school that I liked. Years later, had an issue with my eyes so there was literally nothing I could do other than listen to an audiobook. Absolutely loved the first 4 dune books, couldn’t put it down! Dune is why I now read at all so will always be very special to me!

    I first read Dune as a teenager in the late 1980's. It had everything poliltics, religion, economics, spice as the oil of its day, imperial intrigue, rival houses, swords and lasers, spaceships, and sexual politics. For me, Arrakis was the oil-rich middle east...a barren landscape with the most important commodity of the age. I could easily relate the story to the Cold War politics of the day. One could easily imagine Baron Harkonen banging his fist on a desk shouting "We Will Bury You!" Art imitating life.

    I spoke to Brian Herbert about 25y ago at the launch of the first volume of his expansions. He pointed out that the latter Dune books had descriptions influenced by the visuals in David Lynch's film, so that has become part of the canon.

      Great music scoring that enhances the tone of the video - lets us hold the ideas and thoughts for a bit - then moves on. I could never quite get into Dune World ( movies or books ) but this video explains what the hook is that grabs people and why they get drawn in. In addition to paving the way for Star Wars, Dune probably also helped make Game of Thrones possible.

    Another quality video. I have all six Frank Herbert books though have only read the first three and together that feels like a complete story. I want to get to at least book six though I hear it ends of on a cliff hanger. If it does, then does the first book his son tackles, see out that cliff hanger? Anyhow, it'll probably be a while before I get to complete book six.

Didn’t read the book until the mid 90s. I liked it but didn’t continue with the series, I was getting more into Robert E. Howard at the time. I reread Dune a month before the new movie came out. Read Messiah after and stopped. I reread the two books last year, 2022. Finished the series in March 2023. I was blown away, and now I’m obsessed with it as a whole.

    Frank Herbert. One might say he was very prophetic considering one of the biggest things we are debating right now. And that is A.I. “Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind…… Also it just dawned on me, maybe we wouldn’t have the movie Terminator made if it wasn’t for Dune either. Considering the aforementioned quote….. Just a pity Iron Maiden didn’t get permission to call their song To Tame A Land, Dune like they originally wanted the song to be called….. 𓈖 ….. ⚛️☮️🌏 ( edit here) Just a piece of trivia. For one reason or another JRR Tolkien didn’t like Dune…. ⚛️☮️🌏

    I came into Dune with the extended version of the Lynch film that aired in two parts on syndicated tv in '88. It blew me away with a combo attack of the setting, the story, and the music by Toto and Emmett Chapman (one of his songs and a modified Chapman stick were used in the baliset scene in the extended version).
    I read the book in '99, but it really didn't stick with me. (There's a book I read with strange grammar about people with multiple personalities that get invaded by a force that locks down their personalities. The protagonist fights back with the aid of a hidden personality that avoided the lockdown. I remember more plot about this book than I did Dune, which I remember because of the Lynch project).
    I would say the science fiction series that was the big defining moment for me was the Starchild Trilogy by Pohl and Williamson.

    • @seeingeyegod
      @seeingeyegod 5 місяців тому

      @evanlindsey1100 5 місяців тому

      @@seeingeyegod The extended version that I saw first laid out the basic premise, and showed who the major players for the were. It covered the Butlerian Jihad, the Spacing Guild, and the Bene Gesserit in broad strokes. In addition there was mention of the Landsraad, House Ateides, and the Emperor, and this gave the viewer an idea of what was roughly going on before the story actually began.

    I’m unsure that I’m really contributing; but I’ll share. I’m old enough that I remember when DUNE was published. I was already a big science fiction fan. My buddies were almost all science fiction readers. Unfortunately, the guys I had learned not to listen to all loved DUNE. Therefore, I did not read DUNE. A decade later I was dating a woman who, I learned, favorite novel was DUNE. I stopped dating her. Finally, in the 1990s, I learned that my youngest daughter, years earlier, had read and loved DUNE. I was surprised but decided to finally read it. I liked it. I read it again. It was tip-top. Wish I’d read it then re-read it earlier. I’ve not re-read DUNE since the 1990s. I have not read any of the DUNE prequels or sequels, and probably won’t. But I’m glad you’re promoting DUNE. It’s worth reading and re-reading. Robert Beattie, New York Times bestselling author

They simply don't know the history. He had the entire arc that became the first 3 novels before he wrote a word. God Emperor closes The Golden Path perfectly and is my favorite. I enjoyed the sequel books as well but I would advise against reading them unless you're okay with being blue balled on a epic cliffhanger. I don't view what his son did as his intended completion of that story.

For my money, in years to come, the Sun-Eater series will give Dune a real run for its money. It's similar in politics and empire-ness (?) but has a better plot, with a similar anti-hero type. I had much more fun reading it.

  • @paulolima6407
    @paulolima6407 Рік тому +1

    I like the term "became" in the title. Because of what it means considering the history of Dune. Yeah, became. It didn't become for me and it's fine.
    But back to why I like the term. The book is out there for ages. But the news of a new Dune movie changed everything... And that's basically it, let's be honest, end of story.
    The same happened to LOTR.
    The same happened to IT.
    We're in a culture in which movies capture people's imagination in such a way that just by knowing there will be a movie about certain interesting fictional universal makes a lot of people start to feel like reading the source. And the longer it takes to release the damn movie, more and more people get into it. So delays end up helping franchises, probably very often.
    We're in 2023 and THERE'S NO WAY people would rank Dune, LOTR and IT in the 90's, because the books WERE ALREADY around and OLD, as high as they would today. The difference? The movies!
    Of course I'm not taking away anything from their greatness. I'm just proving my point. Popularity has to do with visibility and imagination, not just the quality of the source. It's how the human brain seems to work. And sometimes this is VERY unfair, true, but that's how the brain works. And we can't save every great novel from making thousands instead of billions. Many great novels will never gain the popularity they deserve. Just like many great people.
    I also reject the idea of cult or popularity as synonyms of quality and that "every book should become a billionaire". Stop it. No book or person should become a billionaire, for starters.
    I like lists as a general idea, as possible recommendation, not to put books in shrines. It's messed up.
    Well, all in all, A LOT of people should be thanking movie makers. And it's hilarious that people who would put these 3 books among their 20th best (if this low at all!) in the 90's are now putting on their top 3. After great movie version of them have been released.
    Oh, yeah, I should stress that: GREAT movie version, not previously released meh versions of Dune (1984), IT (1990) and LOTR (1978) released decades ago. Those did nothing for the books, really.

    Loved the musical metaphor. Dune rocks. 🪱 it was one of my earliest SF reads and I still love it now. Going through a long overdue re-read of books 2 to 6, enjoying that too.
