Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle in which the heart is enlarged and is unable to adequately pump blood throughout the body. While there is no cure, many children and adults live out their normal lives with cardiomyopathy and do well with medication. Cardiomyopathy may progress into heart failure, in which case advanced therapies may be necessary.
Gene therapy research is making strides towards understanding the underpinnings of the disease, laying the groundwork for new forms of treatment in the future.
If you have a family history of cardiomyopathy or heart failure, it is very important that you and your family members get screened for the disease.
The Boston Children’s Heart Center Cardiomyopathy Program is a comprehensive team of specialists that see many children and adults with this disease, and can offer the most innovative care based on the most recent drug trials and research.
