AP Psychology Free Response: 5 Steps to Writing FRQs in 2022 | Albert

- In this video, we go over AP Psychology FRQ tips in the form of five simple steps to help you write more effective AP Psychology free responses. If you follow these AP Psych free response tips, you'll be well on your way to scoring a 4 or 5 on this year's 2022 AP Psychology exam.
This is Part 1 of 2 from our AP Psychology FRQ series. Be sure to also watch the second video on 20 AP Psychology FRQ Tips to Score a 4 or 5.
The AP Psychology free response section is worth 33% of students’ exam scores. While this isn’t as much as some other Advanced Placement courses, it is still a meaningful enough percentage that students must do well on these exams to pass. Have a plan for how you’re going to approach answering AP Psych free responses is crucial to making the most of your limited test time.

Here are the five steps to writing effective AP Psychology FRQs that we go over:
1. Understand the difference between the concept application question and the research question.
2. Learn from the mistakes of students from the past exams.
3. Underline or circle what each question part is asking you.
4. Plan out your response BEFORE you start writing.
5. Practice, practice, and then practice some more.
Be sure to pay special attention to the differences we discuss between the Conceptual Application question and the Research question. If you take nothing else away from this video, remember to always apply the term you’re defining to the scenario presented to you in AP Psychology. Simply defining terms is often not enough to score points.
You can also review the accompanying blog post to this video which goes over these five steps in more detail, as well as provides test taking tips and tricks here: www.albert.io/blog/ap-psychol...

Big day today boys
How did it go?
Very good video
I watched a video about someone saying that we should 1. Define 2. Give an example 3. Relate back to the situation for the concept application question. Is it necessary to give our own example of the concepts? I am worried I won’t have enough time.
It's helpful to give an example if you're applying the concept you've defined. If you're worried about time, we'd recommend you set little time checks for you so you are aware when you're down to 30 minutes left, 15 minutes left, and 5 minutes left.
@@Albertio Thank you! Just to clarify... If one of the concepts were altruistic behavior, I would define altruistic behavior, give an example of altruistic behavior, & then relate it to the scenario given? For all of the concepts?
@@angelicahong5253 Yup, that's a good approach~
I have about a month before I go into AP psychology and I’m studying my ass off, writing notes, repeating psychological perspective definitions in my head over and over again, reading the barrons AP psychology and AP psychology Exam books and reading Ego psychology and social work practice. Can you explain the correlation does not equal causation concept? Can you also give an example of how it would be used on the exam?
Just because something has a strong correlation, it does not mean that the same outcome will always be caused by the independent variable.
In other words, if there is a correlation involved, don't make the mistake of saying X is caused by Y. That's not correct and would imply correlation = causation, when correlation =/= causation.
You can find some examples here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correlation_does_not_imply_causation

Do you have to define the information for the research part? Like let’s say if they asked for the operational definition. Should we define what operational definition is and then say what’s the oper. def. from the question?
Yeah, it's good practice to be safe.
You don't have to but I recommend it. If you say the wrong definition, they won't mark it wrong, as long as you connect it to the prompt correctly. Good luck, I'm taking the test today too!
KatieLikesCoffee kk, thx! Good luck to you too☺️
We got 12 minutes until the test let’s go boys
Lol FRQ is now worth 100% of the exam which sucks because Mcq's were my strengths
We'll see how everything plays out next year, but the College Board does hope to return to a normal exam structure for 2021.

Sorry, we won't be able to get to AP Art History in time for the exam. Thanks for the feedback though!

really about to drop out of ap psych :D
Don't do that!
Dont understand why you would say 33% of the exam; I hope youre talking about future exams and not the Covid updated one..
my test is in 9hrs and i still dont know what an frq is i-

Here I am 15 min before the exam
im cooked for this 😔
I swear to G-d if that guy says SCENARIO like that one more time
Does this mean that the in the AP Psychology test you aren't necessarily writing an essay? (In contrast to the History AP corses)
My teacher only had us study Multiple Choice so I don't know how the AP psychology frq's work
That's right - AP Psych isn't really a traditional "essay" per say.
Thanks @albert.io
Morning before the test 💀
it's in two hours
I’m watching this before starting my exam prep for my final and I’ve now realized, I’ve learned nothing all year.
how many terms are in the concept application? How many terms are in the research method?
Check the past released exams so you can get a gage for yourself. It's not set every single year / has a range.
apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-psychology/exam/past-exam-questions
This year there will be 8 for concept and 6 for research
Do you mind summarizing the difference between correlational and experimental methods?
See here: courses.lumenlearning.com/boundless-psychology/chapter/types-of-research-studies/
12 hours gang i dont know what im doing please help
u got this
Let’s say we only got two wrong on the multiple choice questions and if you score zero on the frq, what is the score you would get. No matter what I do I only do bad at the frq?
Its 33.3 percent of your overall score but I don't know how that would translate to a 1-5 score
not sure if this is accurate, but according to my review book you would still get a 5, doesn’t rlly make sense to me
What do you do if you don’t think you will have time to finish in time?
You prioritize answering what you do know, then go back to the other ones at the end with the time you have left. Leave some space for the ones you skip.
watching this 10 mins before the test hahaha
same. Good luck!
@@madisonwolfe61 ty you too! we got this!!
i got a 5 :D
11 minutes till exam gang
It starts in 1 hr for me
same here !! good luck
At 3:00 the question says "define how each of the following concepts relates..." But does that mean that we have to say how every concept listed relates to the question or do we pick one concept out of the list and say how that concept related to the question
Each one. You don't just pick and choose. You need to cover each one to get full points. Check the scoring rubric for all the outlines to point distributions.
@@Albertio thanks for the response so quickly
gg i know im not gonna have enough time to answer everything, i need a certain amount of time to think things thoroughly
best of luck !
Answer what you can!
so do I not mention the word when wrting my reponse? also bullet points to start my sentences? ?
Brigitte Perez-Hernandez so then how would we layout our response. Just like a paragraph?
Tatiana Fakhoury Write it in a paragraph style and always do the three things for each concept (name, define, and connect). So name the word and define what it is then apply it to the question.
good luck to the procrastinators like me 😭
I didn’t space out my answers and didn’t underline but answered the prompt fully... is this okay? will I get points off?
You won't get points off for not leaving a space. It just makes it easier for your graders.
months before my exam...at least im not last minute
AHHHHHHH
Who’s watching this AFTER the exam???
Hope you did well!
I was told that I need to decide the point value and write it down for the FRQ. Does anyone happen know what point value is?
If you'd like to figure out the point values of past FRQs, you can do so by searching for the previously released AP Psychology FRQs.
You can then see how different questions have been distributed in the past. That being said, I'm not sure why you would need to write down the point value for your actual FRQ...it's possible your teacher is trying to build the habit of having you anticipate how you think each part is scored as practice.
@@Albertio thank you so much!
The test is in 15 minutes 😳😳😤😤
an hour until exam time anyone?
Yo Albert.io pray for me please...
Rooting for you~
i just have a hard time putting my thoughts into words.
Hey I’m confused on what you mean by “you can’t lose points for misinformation unless it directly contradicts correct information that would have scored a point”. Can you maybe provide an example?
If you say something incorrect that impacts another part of your answer that is correct, then you may lose points because you have not clearly demonstrated to your reader that you understand the concept (otherwise, you wouldn't have made such a contradiction). It has to be explicitly clear that you understand and can apply the concept asked of you.
Albert.io thank you!!
@@mlpmlp4881 You're welcome, good luck on your test!
Is it okay if we don’t define everything ? I think it’s better if we just give the application example straight away because defining takes a lot of time
No it's not okay. You're not likely to get full points. Define and then apply.
@@Albertio They only score for application though right? In some cases it seems unnecessary to add a definiton
@@Nina-zd7nr It really doesn't hurt to include a definition. If a number of AP Psych readers are all saying the same thing, there's usually something to it. Write in a way that's in the format the test graders are accustomed to receiving an answer.
