It's 2023 and I remember this video thought I would rewatch James Dean 130, drift in a rtr mustang. Little do any of us know at the time of this video that James would one day become a driver for the RTR team in formula drift 🇺🇸 . His Other team mates Chelsea Denofa, and Adam LZ.

Man I love the Mustang~ I think for it to be competitive for competition though it'd basically need to be torn down and get a complete refresh/overhaul. She's a big girl and it show's so cutting weight in some places would be a def must for it. The car seems like it makes good power but doesn't put the power down well and like it just blows the tires off so dunno if it needs some updated BC suspension or some grippier tires or both.~
But I can definitely tell the two biggest things it needs is definitely more lock to be good for competition. And it needs to be driven SUPER aggressively. Like despite its big heavy nature you have to really have full commitment with it or it just seems to be a handful. Is almost like driving an 86... Your gonna struggle more trying to baby it around than if you just full send it. Seems like James really got the car settled and able to maintain speed by doing very good left foot braking.
Gearing also could be playing a roll in how it drives as well and maybe even tuning setup. Dunno if it'd be possible to have the power come on more gradually instead of just lighting the tires up from the get go. I'm not the most knowledgeable but just a few things I think could def help get the car to be easier to drive and more competition friendly.
So comp setup demands a Full refresh.. weight, tires (For competition Kumho Ecsta V700 might be good), suspension, trans, Diff and a refreshed tune. The whole 9 yards basically. Maybe ask Vaughn or Chelsea for some tips if possible on how they'd set it up for competition.
But if its just gonna be a bash/party car then I'd say Gearing, Suspension, tires and driver mod. xD
Great thoughts dude and definitely what we are thinking. A new set of coil-overs, new angle kit and diet are on the plan. The car will just be for fun though, as our comp 180 is just so capable in comparison.
@@driftgames_life Don't forget Vaughn has won FD 2010 in the s197 chassis, and Trenton Beechum won pro 2 last year in one.
@@driftgames_life Awesome!~ And yeah I could see it staying a fun car. It could be competitive but that'd take far more time, money and effort when you already have a working proven platform.
Plus I think the Mustang would be better for more faster smooth flowing tracks and those tight tracks with quick switchbacks just suit the nimble 180 more. :)

@@blackviper9392 Yeah but also gotta remember both Vaughn's chassis was new and top of the line back then. And Trent's chassis is even more superior to that 2010 car and is lighter, more power, better suspension and a fresher less abused build than his. Trents car use to be JTP's S197 Mustang that he ran up until 2015 year before switching to the S550 in 2016.
So Trent's car is technically a better version of what Vaughn and @Drift Games has.

If this car has a turbo try a twin screw supercharger for better power delivery, Ford V8s need more power down low. maybe a smaller turbo to spool quicker

you can tell the difference in mindsets too. that fear factor is a lot lower for JD. Dave drives a lot more timid, almost worrying that he'll break the car or something.

James is a good dude, but from experience, Mustangs are a handful. If you haven't yet, definitely join the FMC Drift group on Facebook, tons of priceless information on there to help you get this thing set up perfect. Mustangs are becoming a huge platform in the US and the aftermarket is starting to catch up and put out some solid products.

I think most don't count the FIA competition as a real world championship event. It was only 1 event with a few countries. James winning Europe and Formula Drift means he has beaten over 40 nations. Gocha is an incredible driver, but he needs to come to DMEC to shine!

I watched some videos of the RTR mustangs and the rear seems to grip up more with the handbrake being applied. Very strange
It is strange and we think it's to do with the live rear axle and getting some load on it.
