    What do you think about buying a sewing machine in a grocery store? Yay or nay? 🧵

      I shop the $T. I've bought a lot of good, useful, solid stuff there over the years so not that picky where I buy other stuff pertaining to my life. As long as it's reputable, in good shape & not a suspicious price point why not a grocery store. Our culture is 'one stop shopping' right?

      I think you get what you pay for in a sewing machine. If you have a limited budget, I would look at some of the lower priced Brother, Baby Lock or Janome sewing machines. They are better brands than the newer Singers. My favorite machines are Bernina’s. They are so well made. Save up and go to a Bernina dealer and look at some used machines that do what you want them to. You will probably have a machine that will last you the rest of your life.

      @@lynnleipold273 Thanks for your thoughtful input Lynn! My dream is a Baby Lock. Maybe someday. I thought this little machine is a good first quilting style machine, and it has been great for me. It let me see if I would use the decorative stitches, which I do, and it has the feature to move the needle left and right, which is what I really wanted. I've used the Patchwork which is the step up from this, and I thought it was also very nice. I have an older Kenmore and it's a solid mechanical style machine. I expect this will last me a while, and if it doesn't, I still feel like it was $100 well spent. I'm not against buying something new every few years. The features and options change so much. So buying something a little less expensive and trying something else in 4 or 5 years doesn't bother me. I think of these machines kind of like I do my technology and changing out to something new every few years is not the end of the world. But I appreciate you thoughts!

      It was an amazing deal you got Patty! It's an excellent sewing machine and at a very good price. Here in my country, Ecuador, the prices are through the roof :/ some of the most basic singer or brother machines are priced from 150 USD and up, those ultra super basic ones.
      By this time you have done enough crafts to consider it money well spent! Greetings!

    I just bought the Singer Heavy Duty machine, and I love it. I have one of the 1st computer Viking machines. It's old but it works as good as new. I didn't like the computer buttonholes and this new Singer has a buttonhole foot. I just sit the button in and it makes one to the exact size. I love that. It also quilts great. My family has always been Singer people and I've owned several but in the town where I live, as I moved to overseas just has Vikings so that is why I bought a Viking. I think one of the reasons I didn't like was because it wasn't a Singer. Thanks for this video.

    Patty, I would suggest you make a stitch Bible. What you do is cut “notebook “
    size pieces of plain fabric sandwich like you were going to quilt it.
    Label the stitch, # and start out stitching in all needle positions and if you changed the auto tension or not.
    Then move on to the next one, etc until you stitch out every stitch pattern possible on your new machine.
    You will have a reference of all the stitches and how they will look. Makes a huge difference in knowing what it actually looks like and not what the little diagram looks like. Opens a whole new world and by the time you finish that you will be very comfortable with it. Most people won’t do it and they miss knowing how many beautiful decorative stitches you have available. Then you can move on to the different feet. Good luck and hang in there.

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  5 років тому

      Thank you Hilary!! That is such a wonderful suggestion! I did a small sample to test out the machine and see how my favorites look. But, Yes, I completely agree that having a full Stitch Bible of every stitch is very helpful. And it does look different stitched out over a few inches than just in that little diagram. I need to pick up a larger cut of plain fabric to do the full project. I am very excited to have all these beautiful stitches. The old machine had a few, but nothing like this one. And with the extension table, I'm excited to do some small quilting projects. Are you a quilter?

    • @TheHilary49
      @TheHilary49 5 років тому +1

      Yes. I quilt , do heirloom sewing including smocking. Also I made all my furniture slipcovers. They are insanely expensive to buy. I design, drape and make some clothes. I don’t care for frilly so my look is more Eileen Fisher which is very expensive so I knock them off. I try them on at a high end store and photograph all angles and return home and draft a pattern. I buy lovely linen (which is expensive) and recreate it saving hundreds of dollars. It’s very rewarding and doesn’t break the bank because I have edited my wardrobe to about 30 pieces. 10 dresses,blouses, and pants. I rarely wear skirts. That’s not counting my hand knits or coats.

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  5 років тому

      @@TheHilary49 Wow Hilary! Do you have an instagram or anything where you share your makes? I definitely want to make my own clothes, but I'm not quite ready for that. I'm finishing my first apron project sewn using a Butterick pattern. It involved gathering so that was new for me. It's going to be so cute and it makes me wish I could wear a simple gathered skirt. But I don't have the waistline for it anymore, and I generally only wear pants and shorts these days. I like frilly and girly, but I can't wear it. And being on the full figured side, it's difficult to find things that fit well. I did make a couple of pairs of pajama pants that I love, and I would like to remake them this summer since it's been a year, and I've forgotten what I did. lol! I wear the same stuff over and over and don't understand the people who sew dozens of outfits every couple of months. I understand it's a joy to make, and I'm a little over run with bags....but that's not as expensive as all those garments.

    Hello Patty. I hope you're doing well since posting this video. I bought this same singer @ Ldle last week for my daughter to make scrunchies & other begginner projects. I watched your video hoping your unboxing would include powering on the machine. The machine's motor made a grunt it's 1st time on when the fabric feeder tracks shift. It makes the same noise every time it's turned on. Since then it has done nothing but tangle the top thread under the plate and make grunts and breaks needles. The bobbin thread doesn't seem to tangle up. She bent one needle. I broke 3 needles just trying to see what's wrong. C4 & E6 codes. I removed everything and cleaned the bobbin area. Used the provided bobbin to fill with thread. Rethreaded the needle over a dozen times. Any advice you can share is greatly appreciated. TIA.

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  11 місяців тому

      I would actually recommend returning it. It should sew easily new right out of the box! If you can swing it, I would suggest getting a Patchwork which is a better version of this one. Breaking needles is really dangerous. It sounds like you might not have the bobbin seated properly. The drop in bobbin for the Patchwork is much, much easier to use, and it's a superior machine.

      @@PattymacMakes Yes, I'm using it now to make masks and I like it okay. I bought it because my other two machines stopped working. One was a cheap Singer my mom bought for quilting in the 90s and the other was a Viking that she bought in 1977 and sewed many clothes on it. I want to get a Viking when all the stores open back up again.
      But for the record, there is nothing wrong with the machine and I would find it to be a nice beginner machine.

      @@blazingfire8794 I think it's a nice little machine, too. I enjoy sewing on it. Though I had trouble making masks on it. They were too heavy for mine, so I stopped making them. I'm doing a light quilted bag project now, and it sews that beautifully. I guess my dream machine would be a Baby Lock, but for now this one is doing what I need. And I have an older Kenmore that sews really well. It lacks the decorative stitches and the needle doesn't move as much left and right, which I like for sewing zippers in bags. So I wind up using them both.

I have found that I can do a semi-automatic stitch by lifting the foot and moving the needle for each stitch. I don't know but it works for me.
      One thing I like about the machine is that I can just about use any low shank presser foot on it. I purchased some extra feet from Amazon and am able to use it. I'm not a UA-camr othewise I would post how I make my masks as it's not hard.

But I appreciate your tip! And that's good to know it takes those generic presser feet! I think it's great little machine, and I'm happy with it. If you haven't cleaned or serviced your machine in a while, it could be due for that. I would suggest contacting Singer about it. If you have a sewing machine store nearby, see if you can take it in for service. It sounds like it really needs that. I'm sorry I can't be of more help to you. Best of luck! Hi Patty! I’m in the Netherlands and just ordered this machine from the Lidl website. I’m so excited to receive it that I started watching reviews...what a delight to find you live in VA Beach! I used to live in Norfolk, on the Bay, and went to school in VA Beach, and I miss it so much. It’s lovely to hear your 757 accent and also learn about my new machine. I’d be curious to know what kind of thread brand you’ve used on this machine with success. I’ve ordered some of the Crelando brand on the Lidl site and am also looking at some Gutermann thread, but if you have other suggestions that work well I’d be interested to hear it. Thanks so much for taking the time to make this informative content Patty!

      Hey Nathalie!!! WOW!!! What a small world. Doubly funny is that I filmed videos today about this machine. A longer one with my review of using it and another one on threading it. So stayed tuned!! I have a few more planned on thread tension with it and various technical aspects of using it. And once I get all that out of the way, I want to start sewing small project videos using it. I do love this little machine, and I think it's a great bargain. As for thread, definitely buy better quality. That is true for all machines, though. I do like Gutterman which is probably your best bet in the EU. My favorite thread is actually purchased from the Craftsy website. I just bought a new kit, and maybe I should do a video on that as well. I will tell you that getting your thread set up correctly is a big deal, so check out the video on that ua-cam.com/video/He5CLYgbzcQ/v-deo.html My family on my mom's mom's side are Dutch, so I dream of going to the Netherlands. @@PattymacMakes Hi Patty! Thanks for your quick response! How funny that you're just now recording more content on this machine, I will definitely subscribe to your account to stay tuned. I have been working with my mom's old Anker for now and I'm not great friends with it. Now that I will have my own machine I want to make sure I treat it well, so I will definitely watch the thread tension video next. And how nice that you have Dutch grandparents! If you ever end up visiting and find yourself in Breda (a smaller city in the South), do let me know and I'll give you a tour of the town! Our downtown is VERY different from Virginia Beach's! ;) (though we don't have a cheesecake factory so VA Beach wins on that front). As for thread, I did end up ordering some Gutermann as well. I have a punch needle throwpillow sham order that I need to finish sewing before I can ship it (to another VA Beach native in fact, though she lives in NJ now). I don't want to risk not being able to work the machine because of bad thread. Thanks so much for your advice and I will definitely keep an eye out for more videos!

      @@tvstudentNL Hey again Nathalie! I did a rough draft edit on the machine video last night and it's over 30 minutes, so pretty in depth. Mostly I'm showing the features of the machine, because not everyone will know or understand everything. Hopefully you will still be able to glean some information from that. I didn't realize it was so long until I started loading and cutting clips in my editor. As far as thread, it was explained to me that buying the best you can afford is generally the way to go. Don't buy the cheapest and don't use old thread. As far as the machine goes, once you understand threading it, it pretty much sews itself. I think it's a nice machine. I would not sew canvas duffle bags on it or heavy wool coats, but smaller, light weight cottons and knits work great on it. What kind of stuff do you sew???

    Congrats, that is exciting. Mine is a Brother CS6000i bought last year. It also has an extension table. I just saw a vid the other night where she showed a Janome & a Kenmore...looked exactly alike except for brand label. Janome bought out Kenmore some years ago so maybe check with them about parts?--- I bought a Kenmore when I was pregnant 51 yrs ago (thinking I could make baby stuff… that didn't work out, hated it!) and it had that front loading bobbin....not hard just a bit of a pain. My machine has that lovely drop in. Mine is also computerized & auto threader. What sold me was speed control & you don't have to use the foot pedal. I've always had messed up hips with limited range/ability. There's a youtube channel that has the easiest makes that I think I can tackle them including a pillow case that doesn't use that obnoxious 200 step 'burrito' method (yes I saw your vid on that one too) haha. Anyway she has a 'Singer Brilliance'. Well off to hemming some more t-shirts. Have a pad cut out for under the machine to keep it from jarring....great tut for that & then try that pillow case. Have fun. PS- read all the reviews on that book. I was kinda turned off when a few reviewers said it was mostly about the 'feet'...maybe on down the line, need to get a lot of basics under my belt 1st! Thanx for sharing your new toy :D

      @PattymacMakes  5 років тому +1

      Thanks Kathy!! What channel is it? I'd love to check her out! I actually came up with my own simple method I follow to make my pillowcases now. And yes, much easier than the Burrito. Though that one is nice if you want something special with trims. That's a good tip on the Janome parts. I have no idea if that would work or not. I'm going to take care of it and can still use it for some things. But I love the the stitches on the new one. It's pretty basic but I think it will last me a few years at least. My dream would be a Baby Lock. Oh man are they nice. And so quiet. The book is actually really good. Her point on the presser feet is that it's the presser feet that make the difference in sewing. And she talks a lot about getting tension right and what that looks like. It is actually a good beginner's book, because she explains so many things. I want to add it to my personal library mainly because the trouble shooting info is so good. She does have a free class on Bluprint you might want to check out. Search under her name. I feel like because of what I read in that book, I was able to thread this machine correctly right away and start sewing with out any issues.

      @@nullitas5778 OK!! Thank you for that input! I will definitely work that into a video. But I can tell you, that I am really happy with the machine. I think people having issues with the machine are probably using wrong thread and are not getting proper thread tension due to not threading the machine correctly. There is a learning curve with the bobbin case, but I do have a video about that. It's a great beginner machine, because it's inexpensive, and you can try out an entry level quilter's machine to see if you do use the decorative stitches. I do like using them, so it's a good choice for me. I will definitely work on a video to go over all of this. Honestly, it's only $99 and for that kind of money, I don't think you can beat it. @@nullitas5778 You're so welcome Ayano! Honestly, 90% of the time, our sewing problems are with improper threading, using the wrong type of thread, using old or cheap thread. If you can work through those issues, your sewing life improves tremendously. Improper thread tension is generally why we have problems with our machines.
      This is definitely a light weight machine. It is not designed for production sewing or sewing materials like denim. It will struggle with thick layers. It's an introductory machine and good for light sewing. Remember, it's a $99 machine, and you are only going to get but so much at that price point. If you want to sew canvas totes or jeans or dozens of purse straps, this is not the machine for you. If you want to try out using decorative stitches and sew small projects while you learn, it's a great machine.

      That sounds like your feed dogs are not moving the fabric through. You should do a very thorough cleaning on the machine. Take everything apart on the bobbin housing and clean completely. That will often fix the issue. If it doesn't you need to find a good repairman or more likely you will need a new machine. Sometimes the timing goes off, and there is no fixing that.
