The sneak peak is for the next episode 1x06 "Illusions" that aired 12/25/1984, and the VO mentions Paper Dolls coming up next, which would have been episode 1x11.

I think that 80s television was the best of everything, from the shoulder pads, to limousines, and let's not forget the glamorous actors and actresses! Glitter was one of my favorite series, and Morgan Brittany, was absolutely beautiful! California dreaming at it's best!

They built this whole theme to accommodate all these fabulous guest stars, then only brought in four of them, leaving America to stare at stock footage of a printing press.

I don't even remember the show on the air. Back in those days if you didn't have the ratings you are done. It must be thousands of shows didn't make it past the first season.

This show had everything going for it-a good theme,an appealing cast and a premise which could've spinned hundreds of stories. Where did it go wrong?

If anything, I would have to say scheduling. Glitter was up against Simon & Simon on CBS and Cheers and Night Court on NBC. With that kind of competition, cancellation should have come as no surprise.

The pilot tested poorly when shown to a research audience before its premiere which led Spelling to fire the producer as well as make changes to the cast when it went to series. Additional cast changes were made after the first few episodes to no avail.

The series originally lasted three weeks in prime-time in September 1984, then briefly returned for three more that December. Due to Aaron Spelling's "pay or play" contract with ABC concerning this series, the network "burned" off the remaining eight episodes in late-night (following "NIGHTLINE") during a two week period in December 1985.

At the beginning of the 1984-'85 season, Spelling produced SEVEN hours of prime-time programming for ABC {which is why some people in the industry referred to it as "Aaron's Broadcasting Company"}. "GLITTER" was one of them- but there were too many "look-alike" anthology series he produced that season (including "FINDER OF LOST LOVES", "HOTEL" and "THE LOVE BOAT"), and the ratings weren't so hot on all of them. By the end of the season, Spelling saw five of his series cancelled- including his mid-season replacement "MacGRUDER & LOUD"- and only "THE LOVE BOAT, "HOTEL" and "DYNASTY" were renewed. And the executive who approved all of those shows- the man who declared "Comedy is dead" on ABC after passing on "THE COSBY SHOW", which became a hit for NBC- Tony Thomopoulous- was fired.

@@fromthesidelines Also, Glitter didn't attract a lot of Hollywood royalty, like Hotel and Love Boat did. (Bette Davis played the St. Gregory Hotel's owner in the Hotel pilot)
I'm not even sure if Lloyd Bochner (a Spelling mainstay) made one guest appearance on Glitter.

Barry I. Grauman Very true. T.J. Hooker was the only other Spelling show to survive another season but not with ABC. Instead it moved to CBS, which gave TJ Hooker the distinction of being one of the few Spelling shows prior to the ‘90s to make new episodes on another network that was not ABC.

    • @greg6363

@@megamanj2004X Spelling wasn’t involved in the production of the T.J. Hooker episodes for CBS due to his exclusivity with ABC. His name is not included in the credits for those episodes.

Starring and guest starring all people who had been on the "Love Boat"!
Not too surprising considering this was an Aaron Spelling show as well.
I have a very vague remembrance of this show. It was probably in the same time slot as something more popular.

This theme is another great Lalo Schifrin composition, right up there with the theme from "Mannix" and the Paramount TV jingle (post Closet Killer.)

Don't forget the Tar Sequence from Cool Hand Luke, which would also be used as the news theme for many local ABC affiliates, after "Move Closer To Your World" was phased out in virtually all non-Philadelphia markets.

Stephen Cannell realized viewers weren't even noticing Melinda Culea. She was supposed to be "eye candy" as "Amy", but the "guys" took up too much screen time......and her role in the series ended. Nor did her replacement {Marla Heasley as "Tawnia Baker"} last long, either.
