Awesome mate! I lived in Chile and down the road to south several times. Chile is a truly old school road trip, adventure and open the map to find a spot. I salute you to not mention spot names. Chile still these kind of surf trip that you have to search and find by himself the spots. Truly adventure. Please let’s keep this kind of surf trip alive. Internet generation just want the name of spots and how to get there.
Cheer’s mate.
Yeah exactly!! Just one to get on the road and just explore! Sick place and can't wait to go back!!
I only ever name well known spot that already well on the map, but either ways, there's still a ton of coastline out there to explore!!
Stoked on the content! Curious if you could provide some info on the sweep/current on these days with swell? Would be super useful for people like me who want to travel and get waves but unfortunately work at a desk and don’t surf every day. Thanks, Dan!!
Very helpful. Thank you. I've been in Swakopmund in July and August (not good enough to surf Donkey's) and now I will fly to J-Bay for September and October followed by Sri Lanka for the rest of the year. I was looking for a place for January and February and it seems I found a place to go.
Swakopmund could be a place for you to visit. It's cheap, safe, has very good food, empty line up's but many dolphins and a very good vibe. I liked it. Although the quality of the waves of the local surfspots aren't that good like those you showed in your video.
Thanks mate! Might see ya in Sri Lanka! Heading there in 2 weeks! Would love to head back and explore more of Africa!!
Hey Dan, my buddy and I just got back from a great trip down to punta de lobos (and points south) largely based on this video. It was quite an adventure and we scored lots of fun waves! thank you for the suggestion and details provided. much appreciated.
Epic mate!! So stoked you found it that helpful and that you got waves down there... Hope you scored some sick waves for the amount of driving you did hahah 😂
Waves look so so fun!
Soooo Fun!! Feeezing, but fun haha!
The filming thing is a touchy subject. A lot of locals at semi secret spots will take exception to people filming at their spot. Fair enough I'd say. It's hard when you're filming a travel vlog, but that's just the way things are. You have to see things from their perspective. Their waves are uncrowded partly because they are isolated but also because they are under the radar. With social media this can change overnight. I've seen it happen.
Since you're on your own I imagine if you hadn't been filming then the locals would have been pretty friendly. I have been to some notoriously localised spots and been treated very well by the locals after showing respect at the start. Hawaii is a good example of this.
Yeah its super interesting and something I struggle with a lot when I travel. A lot of the time I don't film when the waves are good for this reason!! But yeah i totally respect how people don't want their spots blown up so I try and keep names and locations under wraps for lesser known spots. On this particular day, there were three cameras on the beach anyway hahah!!
@@DanHarmon123 Yet you posted the video anyway. So much for respecting locals. Its not your resource to exploit visitor.
@@SRFTRD Hey mate! Yes, as I said above, it's a pretty well-known spot; I don't mention any names either, but you can easily find it on Google, and there were three cameras on the beach already that morning...
@@SRFTRD Says the "Weon" Boogie boarder... LOL He never mentioned any spots but anybody can find the spots on Google,
Chile is a Goofy footers dream, Lived here for 20 years
Sick! Would love to be Goofy down that way hahah...
Looks super fun that left you surfed first up crazy how people hate you filming i mean its not gonna blow up the spot but understand. On ya mate
Makes me want to head to 🇨🇱! Did you use an particular resource like surfline or a local one to find your surf spots?
Do it!! Yeah just MSW and a few random blogs!!
Chile is usually pumping all year round. I have NEVER seen Chile flat and lived here for over 20 years... The water is cold as shit all year round but No sharks luckily, so you can surf with out any fear of being eaten like most other countries..
I'm a fan of wetsuit surfing it really rings down the crowds 😅
Looked fun. Nice scenery. I’m over the cold water. I know some good surfers in Peru and they tell me to go to Ecuador all the time. I guess the water is warmer. I need me sum 80 water now, minimum haha
Thanks for the vid, is 4 nights enough down there if just surfing Punta and maybe a wave an hour north?
Awesome once again mate! Chile is great, never surfed there though. You scored some nice uncrowded waves. Brasil is another story, there's some great spots there, had about 12 sessions over 2 trips in 2010 & 2015....Try Ilah Grande, Lopes Mendes if you can make it over. I have a couple of contacts those ways if you need, enjoy, yeeooww 🤙🏄🌴🌅
Thanks Dean! Yeah love dit will defo be back in Chile at some stage, and yes I'm in Brazil now and a lot more crowded but not as hectic as I thought it would be! Thanks for the spot recos!!
Thanks for the great info with an honest & humble style. Planning a trip down that way for September. Have my eye on a point down south (chiloe region) that looks like can only be accessed via 2 day hike or boat. Prevailing wind is offshore. It appears this spot has yet to be discovered by the masses. Anyone know what I’m talking about? Can’t find evidence this spot has been surfed, but wouldn’t doubt there is a local crew keeping it on lockdown.
Haha sounds like you might be onto something James! I didn't stray too far from the well known spots but good luck and hope yous core what you're looking for :)
Hi, it depends, because if you arrive to Santiago, then you have to drive/bus/flight to Puerto Montt, and then go to Chiloé, by water is about 90 kms.
There is a flight you can take from Santiago to Castro, thats about 20 kms. to Chiloé.
In Chiloé there are several buses that can take you to other cities around, and to other islands.
And yes, you are right what you say is not yet discovered by the masses, and is a really beautiful place to visit, also people is really kind and definitely you will not starve...tons of food there.
Hope you enjoy my country 🎉
@@VaeVictis-wh2sbthank you very much for the details here. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to get all the way down to Chiloé this time. I was blown away by the beauty of the natural landscape and kindness of everyone we encountered - including all the locals. I hope to rerun as soon as possible.
Are there some more protected spots (producing chesthigh to headhigh waves) when the swell is huge (which seems to happen quite often in that part of Chile) ? Thanks!
Hey James! Yes, Chile definitely gets some swell. and i'm sure there are plenty of hidden spots. To be honest it was just between 2 and 6ft and firing when I was there so I didn't hunt them out!!
Hi Dan, what time of year was this? I’m thinking of going in July.
This is a sweet wave! Cheers for the cambly vid dude... I'm tutoring now and its great🙂
Yeah really enjoyed my tip there!! And that's wicked!! Hope it helps you travel and make $$$ as you go... YEWW!
What time of year did u go?
Hey Coleman, I went in September last year!
Hey did u take your own board? And did you get a roof rack with the car? Thanks
Hey! So I travel with a board bag (3 boards 5'10) so they fit in the car with the backseats down! But sometimes i'll use roof ties if cars too small :)
amazing
Thank you! such a cool place!!
Hello everyone, If anyone wants to go to Chile sometime, Let me know, I could offer you assistance, pick you up at the airport and take you surfing all over south central Chile. I am an agronomist engineer and have been to the USA to work 4 times. Even you Dan Harmor! Cheers
Love how you roll bro. Can't beleive you slept in your car to put on a cold wetsuit on a freezing dawn patrol. Inspiring :)
btw, what month(s) of the year is(are) best for this zone?
Hey mate! Yeah I've done that kind of thing more times than I care to admit hahah! But this one was chilly hahah! This was in September last year. I think there's waves all the time, but Winter has the biggest swells, but spring/autumn can have the best conditions!!
@@DanHarmon123 shows a lot of dedication and love for the sport! Sounds good about Chile. Thanks and keep shredding! Come visit Santa Cruz, OB, etc this fall/winter!
Logos has waves year round
Por lo visto, estuvo en Punta de Lobos, pero no entró al mar .
awesome video!
Thanks Brian!! hope you found it helpful!!
Hey Dan, great video!! I'm a Brit living in Santiago and surf a bit further north than Pichilemu area, but looking to explore a bit more! What was the name of the first beach you went to ? :)
Hey Ben, what a spot to live!! I'd rather not say it on here but it's not a secret spot and you'll find it easily with some googling ;)
Its puertecillo, and the second one buchupureo, not secret at all
From memory, can you remember what you spent on the car rental per day?
Hey Sean! off the top of my head, it was $300 for ten days, so $30 per day!! (I think)
😊
Viva chile.🌊🇨🇱🏕
Epic country! Will be back for sure!!
to make it more interesting you need someone to film you or others surfing the waves from the beach
Oh tell me about it!! I travel full time on my own, so hiring a videographer isn't always an option for me! But looking to get better (front-on) surf footage in coming videos and have some exciting trips planned!!
what boards were you riding?
Hey mate! In this I was riding a 5'9 Mayhem Sub-driver. A sick board that I've now snapped unfortunately haha!
@@DanHarmon123 thanks for getting back to me! if youre ever in San Diego or Baja Mex, we should catch a swell. Love the Videos.
Florianópolis - santa catarina
Garopaba - santa catarina
Imbituba - santa catarina
Laguna - santa catarina
In Floripa as we speak!! Wicked spot, I love it here :)
Mostro
im glad there are still locals willing to regulate vlogger kooks.
I mean, hardly regulated. There were 4 cameras on the beach and it's not a secret spots. No names mentioned here either...
@@DanHarmon123 they told you not to film and you went in and left. whatever you want to call that. no spot names mentioned but there are visible landmarks in all of your footage and you basically explained how to get there. they didn't like you filming but you still posted the footage. in a previous comment you said there were 3 cameras on the beach, now there are 4...whatever justifies your own behavior i guess. filming from the beach doesn't show the landmarks btw. i guess i'm just old school and can't imagine showing up to a spot for the first time with a camera. you are a competent surfer and you're traveling alone and exploring. you're so close to doing it right.
@@technoskill Cry harder
Not good, much better waves in peru, ecuador, costa rica… in chile that water is freezing and the waves are really bad, don’t go thee not worth it
Yeah it is cold but the waves do pump!! And yes sick waves in Peru and northward, and much warmer hahah!!
You are completely wrong, Yes the water is Cold but there are MUCH better waves in Chile and almost all year round, After all it is the longest pacific coast in the world. You obviously have NEVER surfed in Chile.
@@ekphotography❤
Lmao clearly sarcasm /crowd control bro
Trying to put people off from going there hey 😂 Chile pumps all year round
Can we see more waves? Too much talk
I'll work on it, trying to find a balance between information and surfing!! Tricky when there is no one to film though hahah!
We love the talk as well as the surfing, great video as always 👍
