While day dreaming on a tractor I came up with this stupid idea for a movie where the main character is a John Denver tribute singer and he some how goes back in time to two years before Denver made a name for himself. He finds out that no one has heard of the name or the songs because they have not been written yet. So he becomes a big star. Would be a great John Denver tribute movie.
There's a long-running TV show in the UK called 'Goodnight Sweetheart' that is this same premise. A man walks down an old street and suddenly finds himself back in time during WWII. He creates a new life for himself and rips-off a lot of modern songs to play on the pub piano and impress people.
If you're in New York and someone is doing Beatles songs, they're probably the guys called something like The Meetles or something like that. They can always be found in the subway doing all the early Beatle hits.
I'm wondering just how original this idea great though it is is 'original'. I never watched 'Goodnight sweetheart' but my Wife did and I seem to remember that the main character who was going back to the 1940's did something similar, inasmuch as 'writing' a song back in the 1940's that was actually a hit song from the Sixties or later. I was not paying attention, so I might have it wrong, but I remember thinking at the time what a great idea that was.
Ron Ryan you're right. They did do that in the programme. It's not a new idea by a long shot. But like all things it's how it's wrapped up and presented. The film was amazing, Goodnight Sweetheart on the other hand, was a weird programme about a man having an affair in another time zone whilst pretending to be working for British Intelligence.
I have always loved Goodnight Sweetheart, and that particular part of the story fascinated me, the possibilities Gary had with the music, I’m so glad that this film elaborated on this
I thought the movie was great, but there are some trashing it and saying there is too much idolatry with the Beatles themselves instead of just celebrating the music. Personally I did not see that at all. It's really a love story about the singer Jake and Ellie his girlfriend and his struggle to "make it" in the music business. The music speaks for itself and there is very little of the Beatles themselves in it.
Screenplay by Richard Curtis ???? Watch the French "Jean-Philippe" from 2006 by Laurent Tuel. Exactly the same story with a very famous French rock singer.
Why is there another similar movie premise with Bruce Springsteen inspired music also star a British Indian actor called "Blinded By The Light"? Is this some kind of weird trend in England?
