This was certainly fr. a movie, not a MAdison Sq. Garden concert. I am almost certian that the attractive lady sitting with the man and the cigar was Moishe's first wife, Florence Weiss, with whom he recorded the legendary tune, "Chassidic in America." "Oysher was great, and I had the distinct pleasure and privilege of singing the Passover version of "Chassidic..." with him at the Pines Hotel dur. a Passover seder.Thanx for posting this rare clip. I wonder what movie it's from.
Thanks Special Av Horachamim-Cantor Moishe Oysher-1945. This is taken from a live radio broadcast of a Yizkor commemoration held in Madison Square Garden shortly after the end of the war. An extremely rare recording.
The prayer was written by the late British Chief Rabbi Hertz. Here's the text as Rabbi Hertz wrote it. (Some of the text was amended later.)
Marilyn Michaels Ms Michaels, with due respect, you jave skin in the game :). I *love* Oysher, but he had a lot of undeveloped talent as a chazzan. He was a top notch entertainer, and could have been a great chazzan, but was definitely not on par with the 'Michael Jordan' of chazzanim. YR was strictly a chazzan, and though he davened and recorded chazzanus, Oysher was more focused I believe on theater. Regardless, there was no one like Oysher. I get goosebumps every time I hear him.
I agree, shared with Rosenblatt and Sirota. Never tire of listening to all three of them. I have 1750+ cantorial LPs/78s/CDs. Not an expert but a devout music lover.
Av Harachamim or Abh Hara?amim (?? ?????? "Father mercy" or "Merciful Father") is a Jewish memorial prayer which was written in the late eleventh or early twelfth century, after the destruction of the Ashkenazi communities around the Rhine River by Christian crusaders during the First Crusade.
But these are not the words of that prayer .It is indeed a text composed by Rabbi Hertz during the Holocost although this is a somewhat different version of the text.
