  • In this episode, Mrs. Rover and I finish off a few quick jobs in the shop/home before heading outside to do a little sledding and snowshoeing. Then the heavy accumulation of snow must be cleared from the road to the shop....enter the "Snow Beast".
    If you are new to the channel, Mrs. Rover and I, both in our mid fifties are starting out yet again to build a homestead from the ground up. And although we have gained a tremendous amount of experience over the previous homesteads (that we have also built from the ground up), challenges remain. Join us as we work through the challenges and successes of Rover's Rest.
    ***Another big thank you to my friend David Bradshaw for selflessly providing the drone footage.

    Well my Friend, one more great video with a new co-star Mrs Rover.
    The dust covers that can be just rolled up when need be is a very clever idea (as well as a contained area that can be heated up). Always learn something new by watching! By the way love, the snow beast :) stay warm and safe. Many thanks for sharing.

    Here in the UK we have a soap opera called "Coronation Street" and on it there is a pub called the "Rovers Return".........

      I'm now aware of Coronation Street, it has a huge following here in Canada that I was unaware of until recently. Purely coincidental. If you are rubbing shoulders with any of the executives of the show, ask if they would like to sponsor Rover's Rest. lol

      I think, moving forward, that we will be seeing Mrs. Rover on a fairly regular basis. Thanks for the compliment and thank you for watching and commenting. Always a pleasure to hear from you.

    you have gotten the place looking spiffy. Looks like it is going to be nice and cozy to keep you and Mrs Rover warm for the winter. A great place to get out and enjoy the fresh air on your snowshoes. You can also get in your exercise by walking up and down your driveway.....it looks like a fairly long driveway.

      It's quite comfy and very easy to heat. I think that the driveway is about 170' or so, long enough to warrant a snow beast. Great hearing from you my friend.

    Making winter homesteading fun is a must. Not sure how the folks did it a century ago.

    Really enjoying your new series. I was wondering though, you have built amazing homesteads. Why did you decide to start a new one?

      Good question! If you don't mind I was going to do a follow up video that explains this in detail in the next couple of weeks.

    Thank you for the video, your humble abode is coming along very nicely. I am wondering, why do you put the Snow Beast tires up on wood while it is inside the workshop?

    • @RoversRest

      Good question! When I put it away after a mild day (above freezing) the snow/slush turned to ice and the rotors were frozen in place and would not turn, so I have it tilted forward to help it drain. Good eye to catch that!

      @@RoversRest I do the same with mine .. be sure to clean out the snow and slush from the bottom of the 2nd stage .. I fixed one last week that was frozen and the owner burned off the belt. if you put a 100w light blub in there for a couple of hours it melts it all also put a trap up the machine and it contains the water. Like the idea of ties on the tarp .. more snow on the this weekend here in NS.

    Nice video ... i'm looking at the snow shoes and curious about the boot straps. A friend of mine use to fashion the straps like this out of a car tire tube . He would cut the tube in the same design as the ones on your snowshoes...they worked flawlessly.

    • @RoversRest
      @RoversRest  4 роки тому +2

      Good eye my friend. I did indeed make these straps out of inner tube. It's relatively easy to get good quality used snow shoes for little money but the bindings gone or rotted. These snow shoes are works of art compared to the modern aluminum shoes IMHO.

      @@RoversRest Maybe when you are settled in to Rovers Rest I will ask you to make me a pair of rubber boot straps for my wife and I. We have two pairs of the old style snowshoes...Keep up the good work...love the video's!

    did you have running water and hydro in this building? Are you strictly a compost setup or septic tank?

    • @RoversRest
      @RoversRest  10 місяців тому +1

      No running water. Just the compost setup and containers of water
