Great drive- especially seeing distant snow capped Charleston Peak. There is something about viewing distant mountains/ranges that I especially love.
Good video! I was watching the eclipse via the old shoebox trick they teach you in Elementary School-and I noticed the outside difference in my part of CA. It was about 50-55% at its peak here.
If anyone's expecting 95 to be upgraded to four lanes in CA, forget it. The big thing in that part of the Mojave is the I-40 Colorado River Bridge Project, which starts in two years.
I was at work in Burlington, VT and saw the totality from the parking lot along with half my coworkers - the other half were out back watching from the loading dock.
Parking lot was the better choice since it gave a better view of the 360deg sunset.
We were just in Searchlight in late December…just a quick stop for a geocaching adventure lab at the museum. Interesting top for sure!
Cool beans! I did notice the change in lighting. It's not so much "darker", as a loss of contrast between sun and shade. Technically, it is darker. But, eyes and cameras adjust. In a way, the lighting looks "flatter". Hard to explain.
Has this stretch always been 4-lane? I was last over that way, back in '99. Somehow, I remember it being mostly 2-lane, except in/around Searchlight and the Laughlin cutoff. Perhaps, they widened it to provide a better connection between Vegas and Laughlin. Or, maybe, my memory is just bad.
Nevada speed traps are notorious. Tonopah is another bad one. First, the in-town speed limits are set ridiculously low (25) for the type of road (35, or even 45 would be more appropriate). Further, some towns actually painted the broken-white lane lanes longer than standard. This caused drivers to think that they were going slower than they actually were. Drivers had to constantly watch their speedometers (instead of the road). I think it was just after 2000, that one of these towns got sued over that line-painting (it may have been Searchlight). The State of Nevada banned the practice, after that. Perhaps, someone more familiar with this, can fill-in the details?
I did notice the lighting in your video did look a bit different…looks like “twilight.” I was able to see the total eclipse in northwest PA, along with thousands of other people in the park I was at. It was really amazing and surreal to see! And there was tons of traffic everywhere, especially on the local interstate (I-79), where the traffic was almost bumper to bumper all day!
I didn’t notice, I was too busy looking at the beautiful scenery.
It is indeed beautiful!
Searchlight, the town where you're always afraid of a ticket, but never get one.
Never thought you'd drive this part of US 95- much less during last week's solar eclipse!
Hope you enjoyed your brief time in the Las Vegas Valley while watching the eclipse.
I never thought I would drive it either! It was a cool and unique experience!
Boulder City has lots of room to grow.
And yes, it does look a bit dim there during the day.
Ain’t that the truth!
In all my times going on that route to Vegas, usually in the middle of the night, I have always seen a Metro cop parked in Searchlight. This was the first time I saw an NHP cruiser instead in your video.
Nice video from the solar eclipse! I didn't do anything special to see this solar eclipse given that it would have been even further away from me than it was for you, but I did get to see the eclipse in 2017 just south of Depoe Bay. It was amazing!!
I think your video might have gotten a smidge darker but it's hard to tell. Your camera may have adjusted the lighting or exposure a bit. Also, from what I remember from the 2017 eclipse, it doesn't really get much darker until right before totality.
I’ve seen the three Nevada cities many times in another UA-cam channel-it was cool of you to drive in the middle of the solar eclipse-it probably made your trip worthwhile! 😮😮😮😮😅
In Nebraska four lane divided highways are 70mph was 65mph until 2018. Two lane highways were 60mph then in 2018 became 65mph. In Nevada four lane highways are 75mph and two lane highways 70mph interesting!!!
I wasn’t able to see the total eclipse either sadly. But I was at least able to see a 99% partial eclipse here in Decatur Texas. I couldn’t go to Dallas to see it due to clouds in Dallas.
I never realized the Laughlin turnout was that close to CA.
It is at the bottom of the state after all!
Did you have a tour around Boulder City itself? One of my favorite little towns in the south west.
Fellow "road warrior" Freewayjim" has videos on US 93 entering the main part of the city. Mind you, this was before the I-11 bypass was built farther south of the city.
Not time time, maybe next.
Very cool and scenic route
A very underrated one!
Sam Kinison died on that road somewhere around where the video starts.
