Burning in the Timber | We Used Prescribed Fire in an Ohio Hard Woods

- Well, we did it. After talking about doing it for several years and doing more research about the process of doing prescribed fire legally in Ohio, we finally lit a match and dropped it. The hard woods timber on our father's property has accumulated a very dense layer of leaf litter under the canopy, effectively choking out all the under growth that is such good habitat for small game like rabbits and turkeys. Mainly turkey nesting and poults. Our goal was to burn off the leaf litter and open up that fertile soil to sunlight so that the seed banks of deposited native grasses, shrubs, and other plants can germinate and grow. We also know it's just good forestry practice to reduce the amount of potential fuel for forest fires, and we wanted to do our part. Nice job putting in the fire break
So close to town, we had to jump through some hoops to make it happen legally, and we definitely didn’t want to cut corners and let the fire jump our breaks. They were key to settling our nerves.

Do you need to fill out all kinds of forms to do this or can anyone go ahead and do this? I’ve got property in Ohio that desperately needs burned.
To legally do it, yes, there was a lot of paperwork through the EPA.
