  • This first video in the Basement Tuba Sessions series is on Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries. Hopefully more to come. Enjoy this glimpse into how I approach orchestral excerpts, both technically and musically.
This was originally recorded early during the quarantine, for the BSO at home series.

I love how easy this excerpt sound when you play it. Something I’m certainly striving for!

Sounds great! Thank you for video. For me the ‘organ’ tone is the easiest drone to play against.

@@datubaguy Thanks, brother! I hope you do more of these "basement" tuba videos. "The Ride" is exceptionally difficult, and this was very educational.

What app did you outline around the 5 minute mark? Couldn't make out what it was called

Love it! Great practice routines thank you. But may ask why do you breathe in through the instrument and mouthpiece? It seems slightly unhygienic? Kindest regards Phillip

Hello tubapip, thanks for watching and for the kind words. I'm actually not breathing through the instrument, rather I keep my upper anchored and my lower lip MOSTLY anchored and inhale through the sides of my mouth. I agree that it would be unhygienic and probably a little stinky to breathe through the mouthpiece and/or instrument.
BTW, you sound fantastic on your Cerveny BBb.

@@datubaguy thank you for your reply! The Cerveny is a real survivor it’s from the early 1900’s and I was playing it the day I had bought it! It had been sleeping in a Swiss village for hundred or so years. It’s pitch is a bit funky... my fault obviously. I’ve had the valves fixed and adjusted and it plays much better now. It’s part of my embarrassingly large tuba family! Best regards from Switzerland Phillip

Small rooms are not ideal. That’s for sure.
