    When I learned to play basketball in general and "a screen" in particular, I was told to run up to my man, plant my feet and freeze. Edwards not only gave Marshall a hockey style 'hip check' but also used her arms to push her, making this an obvious offensive foul. I know there was a lot of emotion here but it was so obvious I just don't see how anybody can argue the call.

      There was many wrongs on that one screen that they call illegal even in NBA. First it's a moving screen, then too wide stance, then arms at play too as you've mentioned. Just gotta choose whatever to call.

      Blatant foul, feet, body and elbow all moving out to strike the defender. Easy call. Also, as the clip shows in the last 3 minutes of the game, that was the 3rd pick on Marshall by Edward’s. The first two showed her feet and arms set. They were clearly going there again, but the last one was just too sloppy and obvious. Don’t blame the refs, credit Marshall, she anticipated that 3rd pick attempt.

    Congrats on a GR8 presentation of the nail-biter end.
    Paige B saying s.t. like one play doesn’t determine the outcome is so true: UConn forced turnovers late. Failing to box-out is another. Caitlin C’s inbounds off Paige B. is an example of another key play. Gabbie Marshall would’ve been bouncing up&down, arms waving, face to face with Caitlin C. if Gabbie been defending. I’ve seen enough “tape” of Gabbie M. defending in bounds plays.
    Aaliyah E. was moving both feet; perhaps if the left had been set and only if the right away from Gabbie M. was sliding no call would’ve have been made. (Earlier Gabbie M. was leveled when colliding with an essentially stationary Aaliyah E.) And likewise with a little less shoulder lean and less size disparity perhaps there would’ve have been no call. Gabbie M. has made a career slipping past screeners (often larger) to “keep on the hip” of an opponent - “relentless” is how I recall Kate Martin described Gabbie. Gabbie M. is quite quick and cat-like, and, persistent, which, prob was on Aaliyah E’s mind. Just go back and re-watch “The Block” (actually two big D plays - that block and a “pass defended”) near the end of the Iowa v Nebraska BIG 10 Championship Game.
    As I’ve said before, Aaliyah E made what would’ve been a nice “chip block” on an EDGE rusher …

    The rules are clear and unambiguous. It was an illegal screen for a number of reasons. To set a legal screen requires that the feet be placed not more than shoulder width apart, Edwards' legs were as wide as she could make them while remaining upright, the screener cannot lean and Edwards' clearly leaned, then she extended her elbow. To not make that call would have been the mistake, regardless of the game clock.

    Over the years - decades now, really - Connecticut has made hay committing illegal moving screens in their motion offense that Auriemma has deployed, to great success. If officials had called just HALF of the illegal moving screens that CT has committed over the years, they would be short 2-3 of those national titles, if not more. But WCBB officials have been notoriously bush league at calling games by the rules, and probably weren't very knowledgeable that those violations were even being committed. Nowadays it seems to be becoming more obvious to them, as they are calling them more often, not just against CT but against all programs in general. Here was just one certain occasion of where a moving screen finally rose up and bit CT in the ass, instead of biting opponents playing against CT all those past games where the Huskies got away with them......

    If you want to be honest Edwards didn’t steal the ball on the preceding play. She stepped out of bounds while trying to steal the ball. It was never UConn’s ball to inbound. The play that everyone is crying about shouldn’t have been allowed, it was a mistake by the referees to give the ball to UConn. Watch the video yourself. She had the ball in both hands and is standing over the baseline out of bounds.

    Iowa played awful in the first half. They should have been down 20 points or more at halftime. They were only down 6. I called my Dad and told him that Iowa was going to win that game. UCONN couldn't capitalize on the bad half from Iowa. Don't blame a foul at the end of a game when you couldn't seal the deal when it was practically handed to you on a silver platter. Cry more Geno.

  • @helmedon
    @helmedon 2 місяці тому

    Yeah, refs miss calls and call touchy calls, but that was a pretty flagrant foul that really didn't need to happen. If UConn had played more relaxed with that possession it wouldn't have happened. I think Bueckers not showing up early hurt them. There were other fouls that weren't called against UConn. That rebound at the end was awful. They had the numbers to get it, but failed. It was great game though. A few future stars for both teams.

  • @Justheretobehere12
    @Justheretobehere12 2 місяці тому

    Ok because I saw people arguing in the comments about this being a “clean screen”let me explain it from the person on my team who screens the most with a what she did vs what she should have done
    1st her feet were very wide and her right foot had moved
    If she hadn’t had that wide of a stance and her foot didn’t move maybe the call wouldn’t have happened
    2nd her elbows, you can see her elbows out on this play which will definitely be a call. If she had her elbows in there probably wouldn’t have been a call.
    And yes Gabbie does play into this. She is an amazing defender who knew that if she overreacted the screen she could get the call there and what she did was smart

  • @hoopaholicstickum
