That is the very harpsichord that I commissioned from my friend and fellow chamber music player Frank Hubbard. Alas, I moved to Europe while it was being built and was not able to handle the cost. Fortunately Frank had several people who wanted the instrument and were willing to pay more than my contract price. I am really happy to see and hear the finished instrument. It is sad that Frank died so young. He was a great artist and craftsman, and a quite good violinist.
I learnt this concerto when I was 16. I’m now 59 and still return to it often. I’ve always found this piece so satisfying to play although unfortunately have never had the opportunity to perform it on a harpsichord. Therefore thank you for this performance.
Thank you for letting me hear as Bach would have played this beautiful composition in beautiful instrument. Heard almost all his pieces were composed and played with harpsichord. Danke sehr-~
Forte: lower manual 1 x 8 (back), 1 x 4 coupled to the upper manual 1 x 8(front) Piano: uppermanual 1 x 8 (front) only. This is a BEAUTIFULLY SOUNDING harpsichord. Your playing is magnificent, too.
And a strong treble! Oh Elaine, you are so fantastic. Your passion for the Harpsichord is clear as the stars twinkling in the sky and the moon looking like a white pizza pie!
Those people who say the tempo is "pathetic" or "too much rubato" obviously haven't heard a sufficient variety of baroque players. Only Romantic pianists would play Bach without rubato!!!
The lower manual usually has 8' and 4' stops. The upper manual is usually a single 8' stop with possibly a peau-de-buffe stop that can be brought in to add a muffled effect to the strings. Both manuals can be coupled together (as it looks like the performer has done here) so that the upper manual stop is available from the lower manual as well.
Outstanding! I studied this piece on piano years ago and never had the opportunity to play it on such a beautiful 2 manual cembalo as this! I am thrilled for your performances and have subscribed! Thanks again!
I find the guitar to be a great inspiration, as an instrument. Wish my hands could play it!! You must have to start very early to get your hands to go around the neck and string board. Thank you for your kind comment!!
How wonderful to stumble across this channel. :) There appears to be a paucity of quality channels on UA-cam and this is a rare gem. Haven't touched a piano in 26 years. Am considering going back to it as soon as I can locate a piano. A lottery win would probably seal my being able to get a harpsichord (which is one of my favorite instruments). At one point when I was seriously studying piano (my high-school years and early college), I was practicing the Italian Concerto, however it has been so long it's going to require a dedicated amount of practice to even be able to get back to playing Grade 6 RCM repertoire.
I'm glad you're enjoying what's already up on my channel. I'm presently working on another series which demonstrates the differences among the harpsichords I'm fortunate to own. So I hope you stay connected! Thank you!!
Elaine, that would be great. I'm kind of confused as to the whys and wherefores of single manual and double manual harpsichords (which pegs me as a relative "harpsichord newbie". I've always loved the way that the harpsichord sounds contrary to the "witty" opinion of Sir Thomas Beecham; the late and esteemed conductor of the London and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras.
The advantages of the double manual over the single-manual harpsichord are: 1. Greater variety of sounds (You can play one hand upstairs, and one downstairs, as Bach suggests in his Italian Concerto. Normally, the louder sound is on the lower keyboard, the softer on the upper, but this can vary with instruments. That's how it is with both of my double-manual harpsichords.) 2. Voice-crossing (In the Goldberg Variations, Bach has the RH and LH runs crossing. You can kind of do it on a piano, but to get the true effect, you need two keyboards.) 3. Real color changes. (You can set up one keyboard with the lute stop (dampers down) and one regular, so that you can effect a real melody and kind of strummed or much softer accompaniment.) There's a lot more sound variety possible with two keyboards.Hope that tells you what you'd like to know!
I'm new to playing harpsichord and can barely hold on with my Flemish single- switching keyboards like that would totally mess me up. Elaine, you're one of my favorites!
+Glen Shannon the keyboard switching is specified in the urtext-really hot when you actually play it presto as it says (not allegro assai in other editions)
Comparone has the look of an Bronzino portrait, especially in full face. Wonderful to see the harpsichord played 'a la Vermeer'. Could listen with joy to her playing and to her introductions, which, despite her American accent, do not grate in the least. An intelligent woman is always a joy, and, alas, a rarity today!
Still havent listened to the Goldberg Variation, sinfonias, art of the Fugue, Well Tempered Clavier. Will get there, and I dont even play. You are remarkable, Elaine. A true gift to the Baroque revival of the modern period. How do you get all these pieces in your head from memory??????
Isnt it funny that the most viewed video of this piece being played is the least favoured. This in my opinion is the best interpretation ever. My Tutor bangs on avbout phrasing and baroque style which annoys me because nobody online seems to have it. However Elaine does. For once you can hear the phrasing. A truly amazing piece - one truly amazing perfvrmance....EVER.
a guardarla (e ascoltarla), mi viene voglia di suonare e imparare il Concerto nello stile italiano. Da parte mia, per ricambiare, ho composto una Fuga nello stile di Bach :)
@@elainecomparone9586 I'm happy to be in touch with you and listen to you. I am an amateur composer and I dedicated a "fugue" to Bach, recorded by the harpsichordist Fernando De Luca. Your harpsichord touch is fantastic and it would be nice if you wanted to perform the "Fugue in the Bach's style"!
@christopher19894 The notes on the top keyboard are the same, but those keys pluck the strings at a different point along the string than the bottom keys. This results in a different character to the sound. If you listen carefully, you can here the difference - the top keyboard has a lighter sound. Usually the difference in sound is greater than in this recording.
@georgemargaris Double-manuals usually are around $16,000-$30,000, thats for a good quality instrument, but you can always find them for less. Check out a nearby maker or the Harpsichord Clearing House.
@KazKylheku though the harpsichord was not capable of playing notes at different volumes, dynamics can be simulated by how much time u give each beat and whether or not you are using both keyboards (manuals). Because this piece is supposed to simulate the polyphony of an entire orchestra, Bach was very specific about which parts should sound louder than others in order to give the piece a concerto-like feel.
@Jimbogreenred well what you have said is true, since during the baroque period, most of the music composed are for the nobles. (The rest of it being sacred music and other important events). As the different period changes, the main audience for the pieces composed differ, such as classical for the public, romantic for self-expression and 20th Century for the out of the norm. (My interpretation of it though..)

We need more harpsichords in this world
Could listen to this all day and never get bored.
That's high praise! Thank you very much!!

Danke sehr for your wonderful comment. Viel' dank!!!
More Elaine on this world! Thank you !
Loved the rubato and agogic accents. So expressive, plus love that you take risks when you perform. That's what exciting performances are all about.
Thanks so much!!
Thanks Elaine, yet another of your performances to add to my library, beautiful!
Your comments make me happy!!!

The short commentary accompanying these videos by Elaine Comparone is helpful and informative.
Elaine, hearing you speak about the piece before you play is really helpful. It prepares the listener for the musical experience ahead.
Good! I'm glad you like it!!

Beautiful tone, i'm mesmerized
im arranging this for a string ensemble for an assignment at uni (im a music student)
My piano teacher used to own a Harpsichord just like that one. Same colors and everything.
5 stars for such a wonderful performance! Truly breathtaking!

Best performance ever. I play both 1st and 3rd movements on the guitar but this makes me wanna through my guitar away and burn my records to ashes.

Wow!!! This just opened my eyes up the Italian concerto in a completely new way. Phenomenal.
