Just a followup video with a quick peek at one of my design failures and why I still like the bell siphon with the breather tube better.

Really like the red bell great job on the design

Put 4 holes in the bottom disc right below black pipe. That way it will not block water suction completely. When low level of water reached below bottom disc , it will be pulled up and air will be sucked.

I changed my grow bed designed due to my continuous failures attempting to solve turbulence issues. I've referred several to you store since the last video. Wish I was able to utilize you design, it looks just right! Well done!

very informative content! thank you so much.
also you could make another content regarding the mass heater. thank you.

I probably will at the end of the season. It's a big nuisance to pull it all apart to see inside of it. ;-)

Why don't you make the snorkel other way around. Like its open from top (length maybe half way the whole siphon) and the other end bottom of the larger tube of the siphon? No moving parts then.

Keep on trying to improve on accepted designs. Love the work you are doing

Make a slit in the bottom of the siphon, that will prevent the cup from getting sucked up.

Maybe I am missing something, but what is wrong with the standard siphon?
I've never had an issue with it...

Maybe someone suggested this, but. One thing that might be an improvement to the working 3d printed version, would be the air tube that is nested on the wall. Instead of being supported by the side of it. Less surface area. (just a minor thing)

I didn't feel like putting an extra bend in the tube. ;-)

why don't you glue 2 weights to the cup? you're getting a problem caused by the cohesive propertied of water.

You need 2 90s and a 3 or 4 inch vertical drop before the first elbow. Thats the biggest mistake people make. Adding moving parts only adds another failure point to a simple problem. The other big issue people run into is not putting input valves on there beds. The other thing people do wrong is run the output under water not allowing air to get back up the siphon to break it. Snorkels, moving parts, and any other over engineering to the worlds simplest design will only add failure points and cause more problems. Remember bell siphons were first invented with no moving parts or snorkels in Rome 2000 years ago we don't need to reinvent the wheel use that original design and it works great. Everyone tries to tweak it and patent it and theres simply nothing to improve on.

So perhaps there was some room to improve! My original tests, this doesn't need any elbows and can drop the water straight out, however I do have one elbow in the 6 I have running to direct the flow to the drain. Also it will run with no tail pipe, again, I have about 1" before the elbow but it works without it. Bell siphons were not invented by the Romans, it was a standard siphon, and there are drawings from the Egyptians showing they had them 1500 years prior to the Romans. From what I have found, bell siphons (auto-siphons) starting showing up in the 1800's for sewage disposal.

yeah, I think I saw it in wikipedia in the regular siphon area. Hopefully I didn't see it on the Ancient Aliens show. ;-)

Maybe Rob should have built an aquaponic pyramid greenhouse. (Who did that Bucky Fuller guy think he was, to improve on the tried and true?)
Don't mind me, I have been known to experiment with the heresy known as the Flout siphon. It has a moving part too.
