One of the things I loved about this song from the first time I heard it was the way it builds from beginning to end. Both the vocals and the guitars start out simple and increase in intensity until they just burst from the speakers at the end.

This recording comes from an era of radio airplay when an artist had 2-3 minutes to state their case and given the demanding parameters and the high level of current interest in those recordings I think that those artists succeeded brilliantly.

Brilliant arrangement by Michael Stewart (guy in the glasses, 2nd from left in the photo), who was the brother of John Stewart (Kingston Trio, who wrote "Daydream Believer", among others). We Five were well-respected in the folkie community, I think, but had only the one big hit. They were part of that bridge when folk music went electric. If you're destined to be a one-hit wonder, that record is a helluva great flag to plant on the folk/pop landscape; it was universally beloved by young and old.

We Five was one of the earliest acts signed by Herb Alpert to A&M records in 1965. This album was released in between Herb Alpert's giganticly successful Whipped Cream and Other Delights album and Going Places. It hit the charts around the same time that Herb Alpert's signature hit A Taste of Honey hit the top 10.

In the summer of 1965, I spent most of my time hanging out in Daytona Beach, Florida enjoying life, and riding around in my baby blue drop-top Chevy convertible, listening to music on my AM radio. One song that brings back that time in my life is this song. As I enjoyed my life during that summer, I knew that military service would call me in August of that year. I started that summer as a carefree young boy, until August 25th when manhood called me. My government sent me an invitation to participate in a slight altercation in SE Asia. Now at age 78, when I hear this song, I harken back to that boyish summer and smile.

I love the arrangement of this cover as well as the overall performance. The build-up in intensity from the sparse, almost acapella beginning to the end really sets it apart from the original by Ian and Sylvia. As others have mentioned, the song was written by Sylvia Fricker from Ian and Sylvia in 1962, two years before she married Ian Tyson.

that's about the only bad thing about a lot of these great songs from the 60's. way too short - radio demanded 2 1/2 to 3 minute songs. they cut up a lot of songs to fit that time frame which was really a crime imo. example : light my fire by the doors - a 7 minute song cut to under 3 minutes. in--a-gadda -da-vida - a 17 minute song cut to 2:54. yikes !

Great one-hit wonder choice, Harri, and an astute reaction with your comparison the the other folk-rock groups you mentioned. This group's vocal harmonies and killer rock beat was off the charts impressive. Bev Bevin's voice and stage presence was so pleasing and she could sing with the best of her contemporary female rock vocalists from the era.

This is the first song ever written by Sylvia Fricker in 1961 (later to become Sylvia Tyson when she married Ian). Ian and Sylvia recorded it in 1963, 2 years before We Five released their mangled version. We Five murdered the words and the melody. So I love Ian and Sylvia's elegant version and detest We Five's mangled offering that eliminated some of the most important original lyrics of this song.

It's got an interesting contrast between the melancholy lyrics and an upbeat arrangement that has a little of the Byrds and a little Jan & Dean influence. The Ian and Sylvia original, written by Sylvia in a bathtub she was using to escape the cockroaches in their Grenwich Village room, was great, but not accessible enough to reach such a wide audience. The We Five brought it to the masses.
PS: Crispien St. Peters offered his own unique take on this to a British audience.

They played their own instruments, but I believe the drummer was a session drummer, as they were a folk band in transition from acoustic to electric instruments and hadn't gotten a drummer yet. Personally, speaking as a drummer of 40+ years, I think the session drummer on this track overplays way too much. He's all over the kit, showing off his technical chops, but he's not really playing the song. Folk-rock of the 60s generally required a Ringo-type drummer to keep the beat and play a few fills in the right spots. The drum part on this track seems like one endless fill.
