How I wished this vision of liberty and prosperity were real for all Americans. Unfortunately, Many in America are languishing in systemic racism, oppression, and poverty.
Let the vision and mission of Ema Lazarus be realistic to all Americans including foreigners who need to experience the American Dream. I love Ema Lazarus and wish to honor her legacy of keeping America as a place of refuge for the oppressed. So help me God.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
    With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
MOTHER OF EXILES. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
    Emma Lazarus

I deeply appreciate your lectures always, but this...is just inspiring! Thank You Henry Abramson from a great-granddaughter of some of those 1840’s German Jewish immigrants who still lived apparently as Christian(?) It may have just been my Grandmother doing that, though. She and my Grandfather were, as they put it, “t-totallers.” And Grandma’s brothers were known for their heavy drinking...Ah! So many questions! You really inspire looking for answers!

A very interesting video and helpful to explain the events in Russia that gave rise to the majority American Jewish community and its political loyalties to this day. I suppose her religious liberalism would have given her an affinity to Emerson and the heirs to New England New Thought.

I am originally from Colombia; living now in USA. I love the Poem "The New Colossus." of Ema Lazarus. Here I am getting ready to know more about her. Have a presentation to my students next week. :).

as I understand the Colossus of Rhodes didn't straddle the harbor, it just stood at one side and the straddling idea was a later innovation, I think by Renaissance illustrators.

we should retrain ourselves to say rediscovery of New World in reference to Columbus (or even Vikings, Chinese, Phoenicians, ancient Israelites (fathering certain Cherokee groups) or any other human group for that matter)

    Dear Professor Abramson,
We've been watching your lectures every night for, maybe, a couple of months now. Thank you. You are quite the engaging lecturer !
    We watched this one on
    Emma Lazurus tonight.
It says that it was published in April 2018. Can you tell me when it was written ?
    Regards,
    ~ Janey

Love your lecture series but your socialized health care jokes are getting old. Especially to an American Jew with elderly aunts and uncles in Canada who have waited on lists for up to two years for knee and hip replacement surgeries. It's not the panacea you're making it out to be.
