My wife and I celebrated our 50th wedding this past Dec and I made sure this song was played because she will always be my little surfer girl... has been for over 50 year sept 9 1969 the day I met her
My condolences, Tom-and wishes for more enjoyment of your faves. FYI, check out the film 'Carmine Street Guitars'-Bill F doing this alone in a guitar shop-and so much other good-hearted artistic stuff.
I caught Bill playing this song on a tv show, Carmine Street Guitars, playing one of Rick Kelly’s telecasters. I was so moved, that I tracked his recordings down. Bill plays with such innocence, it almost sounds simple…..but his presentation and interpretations take you on an unexpected journey…..to place that leaves you at peace in your space. If I were to be at one of his performances, I’d be the big guy in the back with tears running down his cheeks…..because his music would take me to a place I’d been before….but never with my heart so open.
I had never heard of him and saw him live at the Guelph Jazz Festival, in a church, improvising with some fabulous players from Chicago. I was the 5'11" guy sitting at his feet with tears in my eyes. Don't hesitate. See him.
What I love about Bill is that just like Miles he will play a pop or folk or jazz song from any age or genre and do something new and beautiful this is just a delight
it's a tradition of playing the pop music of the day i wish more modern jazz musicians would still do, herbie hancock does it as well. Most of them just recycle what's already been done.
@@TheBassfresh in a far less exploratory way, Chet Atkins did this. And certainly jazz guitarists like Wes Montgomery, Gabor Szabo, Charlie Byrd did this in the 60s.
at a sock hop back in 63 I was dancing with my GF and this song was played we were dancing close together and I fell in love not with her but the surfing craze I went out and bought a blue Pendleton, blue jeans and deck shoes just like the BB let my hair grow... got rid of the hair grease...when we camping at Pismo Beach, I rented a surfbroad and start a life time of surfing, the beach and The Beach Boys...long live their music....this is great cover just found him while surfing UA-cam
The primacy of melody. Something to ponder. Makes me smile and cry, too. What a group effort. Nice harmony, nice rhythm and counterpoint, too. In my dreams, this is what I sound like. :)
Glad I woke up this morning and finding a new great channel introducing me to a guitarist that will now be with me as long as I live. Thanks for sharing. Music is the food for my brain that I love.
Too bad they totally wrecked the song starting at the 7:15 minute mark! What the hell is wrong with you guys? That's like preparing the perfect meal and just before eating, standing on the table and taking a piss all over it! Disrespectful in my opinion.
Love the way they listen to and feed off each other . Beautifully played by very skilled guys on EACH instrument . Thank you for the pleasure of hearing something to aspire to .
So many great artists enjoy reinterpreting Brian Wilson's early catalogue, and I thought he was just a plump, cherubic faced, falsetto singer way back then. Now I am a wise old man.
Bill has taken that guitar style characterized by songs like "Sleepwalk" to jazzy new heights, and the counterpoint with Greg Leisz creates "legato heaven" for my ears.

Great musicians playing a fantastic song For those that will only be satisfied with a simplified version, for those that enjoying the countless joys of musicians exploring all there talents to share love for the changes - this track was pure magic!
Bill F. and Greg L. played a duo gig here in San Diego several years ago. One of the highlights for me, was Surfer Girl. It was just beautiful. I wound up buying a pedal steel because I was so amazed by it's sound. I still can't play the thing but I love to hear some one who can. Thanks for putting this out there!

This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. Play this exact version at my funeral..it says everything I could never say.
My wife and I celebrated our 50th wedding this past Dec and I made sure this song was played because she will always be my little surfer girl... has been for over 50 year sept 9 1969 the day I met her
this made me cry. I lost my wife 1 1/2 years ago. and we loved this song
Crying is good. I'm sorry for your loss. Thank goodness there are musicians to help us. Take care.
I'll try and get my girlfriend to dance with me to this in your wife's honour. We've only been together some weeks.
my wife is on hospice, married for 40 years....it's harsh....sorry for you loss.
So sorry for your loss. I love this song too.

I wish I had been turned on to Bill Frisell earlier in my life. He's become my favorite guitarist.
Agreed!
What I love about Bill is that just like Miles he will play a pop or folk or jazz song from any age or genre and do something new and beautiful this is just a delight
a good song is a good song...a brilliant artist will find a way to pretty much make it sound like they wrote it.

He takes the song and throws it high up into the stars at night.
Was it something he ate?

Bill is something else. So real and fun. Love this trio and it’s even more glorious with Greg

This is my favourite thing now.
I've come to Bill late in the day. Thank God I made it at all! Sublime, ego-less music. Many thanks.
blissful music. a gigantic sploosh of texture and richness. Bill makes guitar so beautifull.
I think that not only he is gifted but also he himself is a gift to mankind.

Wow..just wow. The most economical guitar player ever, the ability to say so much with so few notes. Bill is a wizard

wow...pure musicianship, no technical showcase, no self-display, only music and harmony...awesome!!!
The last 3 minutes of this song are absolutely phenomenal.
What a beautiful melody. It feels like breeze in summer night in my ears and heart.
What can i said .... WONDERFUL !
Oh Bill Frisell man...there is nobody like him!
And the Electric Table dude is perfect.
greg is the bill frisell of the electric table
Absolutely beautiful arrangement and performance of my favorite Beach Boys song. And God bless Leo Fender and the Telecaster..... PERIOD!

+stringbender57 i liked it... no urine in my meal.

We will agree to disagree.
Disrespectful is a little to strong of a word here. Just say you didn't like the ending.
It's Bill Frisell man, you've got to expect a few effects at some point!
... and specially Brian Wilson
Beautiful pedal steel.
Greg Leisz sounds fantastic on this. He really fits with Frisell like a glove. Of course so do Scherr and Wolleson, they are the best.
Beautiful.

Bill, Bill, Bill your music makes me happy man!
so beautiful .. I wept with joy for my past
I can’t think of anyone who enjoys playing as much as Bill Frisell appears to. A superb quartet.
One of the most professional sessions I’ve ever seen!
When they change keys the second time, it's so awesome. They all look at each other in amusement.
Oh boy. How much fun was that for the group? I loved how they were smiling at each other like teenagers in a garage. Beautiful arrangement.
Tony Scherr has impeccable feel

"The reason I bought a telecaster " Yeah and a vintage Princeton amp with a Tone Tubby too.
Me too! Now all I got to do is play like him!

Legato Heaven haha. Nicely worded.
Some people should live forever!
How easily their music adapts to the Country style. Like Lori Morgan's "Don't Worry Baby". Stunning, haunting, simply gorgeous!
The multiple modulations are flawless and adding the steel player was a brilliant idea! Love it!🙏🏻🖤

Brian Wilson said he thought "Surfer Girl" was the best song he ever wrote; and this is an outstanding rendition.
Didn't he base the melody on another popular song? I don't feel like googling it
