      1. The left lane is only for passing. If you're cruising in the left lane it is just one more flag that you may be speeding.
      2. Your eyes should always be scanning ahead.
      3. Waze and V1 with the music down so you can use your tools as effectively as possible.
      4. Watch people's tail lights. If you see people braking ahead, there might be a good reason for it.
      5. Always be thinking "where could a LEO be hiding?"

Watch traffic cops, which is the equivalent of the US “Cops” show which I also watch! big fan of the show and it just seems to easy for the cops to pull people over and how oblivious speeders are to cops. I love what you say about exhausts. I'm a bike guy and, just like for cars, everyone wants the loudest exhaust. I hate a loud exhaust. It disturbs people, police can hear me engine braking when I need to hide the fact that I'm slowing down, and it gives me hearing damage. I love a quiet but good sounding exhaust. It doesn't need to be loud to be aggressive!

    • @nathangehman7018
      @nathangehman7018 6 місяців тому +3

      @@landenemch8560 Yeah. It does pain me to hate on my fellow bikers but it's true. I will say there is at least sort of a valid reason in that it does let people know we exist because otherwise we are invisible to an alarming amount of people on the road, but also people really just use that as an excuse and a lot of the time a biker's speed is a large contributing factor to not being seen.

    • @Sean-Ax
      @Sean-Ax 6 місяців тому +1

      @@nathangehman7018 I generally dislike loud exhausts as well, but for bikes, I think there's a practical defense for having an at least somewhat louder exhaust. Bikes are so small that they can be easily missed in the giant blindspots of modern cars, but if I can't see a loud motorcycle, I most certainly can still hear it. I remember one time I had exactly that happen to me where I could only hear a bike around me, so I changed my mind a little on loud bikes, and it's even made me want to put a switchable exhaust cutout (is that the right term??) in my miata for the same reason.
      edit: I posted this before fully reading your second comment where you mention this exact thing. lol

    • @nathangehman7018
      @nathangehman7018 6 місяців тому +1

      @@Sean-Ax I think it's a really interesting discussion regarding bike exhausts. I'll elaborate on my second comment because I don't think I was entirely fair.
      Loud exhausts definitely do make us more noticed and it is a safety thing to a certain extent but I think most of the motorcycle community doesn't actually care about the safety factor very much. I think for most people it comes down to just liking it loud, but the safety is how they justify it to the rest of society. But that doesn't discount from the safety factor that it does add.
      But I also think that for most bikes, it's not entirely necessary. Typically, if I have to be next to someone on the road (like on interstate 81; if you know you know) I position strategically so that if someone switches lanes, they might come close to hitting me, but they won't hit me and I'll have time to react. And most bikes, even heavy cruisers, have enough power to really accelerate fast and not be next to a car for more than a second. A pass is always an intentional thing for me and I'm always looking for the person I'm passing to switch lanes. A loud exhaust would still make it safer, but it doesn't feel necessary.
      There are a few other reasons that I haven't mentioned yet, but I definitely feel they are worth mentioning. The first is pretty simple. At least for a bike, it contributes a lot to hearing loss. Even with nice earplugs, some exhausts are loud enough that I wouldn't be surprised if they still caused significant damage over time.
      The second reason is this: I'm autistic and although I don't have a particularly large sensitivity to loud sounds, it's a very common thing for autistic people to be very sensitive to loud sounds, and thus hate loud exhausts. So just sort of out of respect for everyone with sound sensitivity, I like to keep them quiet.

    • @Sean-Ax
      @Sean-Ax 6 місяців тому

      @@nathangehman7018 I should've mentioned as well that I totally agree with your other points regarding hearing damage and why people usually get loud exhausts. I prefer quiet exhausts, myself.

For example, you set an unrealistically high speed limit at 130mph on a back road, most if not all people won't be driving that fast if the conditions don't allow for it. Inversely, if you set an unrealistically low limit, like our US highways, people will of course drive faster. I have BRZ cricket and I'm not noticing police all the time when I'm sliding on streets in the rain but... they never notice me either because my car is not obnoxious even when I'm flooring it and driving like in GTA... Today I slided in the rain on left turn right in front of trooper waiting for green and... they did nothing. So they looked at each other and started laughing and said to me: "You thought we wanted to race you?! 😂🙈 your car is really fast, we couldn't keep up" and ended up giving me "only" a 50€ fine 😂🙌🏻

    So in my country we have a lot of what we call "interstate cab" (basically just a taxi that works on long routes) and 95% of the time they know where the cops and radars are (they're familiar with the route they're taking and they communicate with each other) and the best way not to get a speeding ticket is to follow them ... If they're speeding you're fine it's clear ... If they're doing the speed limit don't speed a radar might be nearby ...just do what they do ... If you pass one ... Many are ahead of you .. There's even a saying here that goes : "if you don't want the green one(cops' uniform is green here ) to take away your red (driving license is red one...and it'll also get suspended for speeding) then just follow the yellow one (all cabs are painted yellow)

I've met a few bad ones with ego problems etc, but that's inevitable in all walks of life. Up to a point, speeding, in isolation, might just get you a warning. 90% of the speeding tickets I've ever gotten were from aircraft. They fly over highways and measure how long it takes you to get from one fixed point to another. Most of the highways out here have those markers for aircraft. They just radio in to a ground unit and the cop catches up with you and writes you the ticket. And usually when they've already went through the trouble of all of that, they're not writing warnings. Unless you have double D's and have a free Saturday.

    Been pulled over 25 times or so, but only landed 6 tickets out of that. Being thoughtful in where and how you pull over is HUGE. I usually like to pull over on a side road or parking lot and signal that I'm doing so (especially in towns) even if it means driving a block or two further. I also put the my car's (S2000) soft top down and interior lights on if it's dark so the officer can see that there's no threat. Been thanked literally every time, except once... Sometimes you can do everything right and just get unlucky. In my case that was recently getting nailed cruising 20 over by a motorcycle cop, perfect visibility, three lane road with zero traffic, and he was hiding behind a tall row of shrubs using instant-on radar. Played everything right, but it was an older cop who referred to the road as "his" (first sign I wasn't getting out of that) and he was hell bent on shouting at me for half an hour about how many people instantly die the second they drive 5 over. Hey, can't get lucky all of the time!

    It was a Monday morning, 18 year old me, driving my black focus st with tinted windows, trying to get around a very slow moving truck on 290. A**hole in a Tahoe wont get out of my blind spot or pass the slow truck, I made the move. Turns out Mass state troopers do in fact, drive Tahoe's, and the trooper in this particular one was not very happy with me trying to shoot a gap 6 inches longer than my car. Lights came on, I panic, immediately pull over about 100 feet from an exit ramp. You would have thought I pi**ed in his cereal that morning, but I deserved it. After raking me over the coals for stopping in "the most dangerous spot on the highway" he didn't even take my registration, did a quick front plate check (luckily I leave my front plate on) then came back with a fine for failure to yield.
    Lesson of the day, never ever assume it isn't a cop because you never see them driving that type of car. I sold the focus 3 months later because I also learned it is hard to pay $800 a month in car payments and insurance when you make $13 an hour. Haven't been pulled over since *knock on wood*.

      Yeah, Tahoes are fairly common here, but there's a few pretty rare finds. I've narrowly avoided them a few times, but the closest call was a Nissan Rogue. I was in a similar situation where I was trying to get around a slow truck, but there was a Camaro ahead of me and a Hyundai hovering around my left side. After a minute or two the Camaro got over and punched it, causing the Hyundai to tap the brakes. That created an opening and I decided to go for the gap before the Hyundai could close it. Just as I start to press in the clutch to downshift my rear view mirror lights up red and blue, so I throw her neutral, get to the shoulder, and a light blue Nissan Murano with cherries and berries in the windows blows by me, pulling over the driver that shot the gap.
      Another couple seconds and the most nondescript police vehicle I've ever seen would have been standing at my car windows asking for my information.

    One way to cut down on the risk of getting a speeding ticket: Move to Texas. Most rural highways (including 2 lane roads) are posted at 70 or 75 mph, while a lot of Interstates are posted at 80 mph. And typically on those roads the cops will give a 10 mph leeway.
    I have been on a toll lanes section of I-635 in Dallas with a 75 mph speed limit and driving 80 mph.in the right lane while vehicles were whizzing past me.

      @@brianbeckenbaugh4233 Brian, I know what you are saying, however, speed limits aren't for limits but for income. When your amazon box has a crush limit, don't exceed or you will really risk breaking the box. Or, another approach, next time ensure you follow every speed limit perfectly (and don't drive AT the limit thats the wrong use of it right?) . Do so, and watch traffic around you. Ask yourself, if you honestly do this experiment over a few miles at various ramps and speed limit changes, were you safer for everybody around you? Don't comment, just do it yourself and keep the answer as it is an experiment we can all perform. Or, as another thought experiment this time -- cars have become safer, easier to drive, more agile over, let's say... 15 years. Have limits reflected this? Hmm. Not quite limits are they if they don't follow (until they reach any true physics issue, at very high speeds.) The last common complaint is "but higher speed means more energy upon a crash", and thats always true. But that is, as i just said, *always* true. We should all go 30mph at all times. We wouldn't even go to a hospital in any modern car. But we have tradeoffs to make. And we do.

While I still get agitated by others and very occasionally hand over the wheel to them by getting sucked in to the "I'm going to show you" kind of mentality, I just turn off the competitive part of my brain. That is very hard. But it keeps me chilled out. As for spirited driving and enjoying the car, I ask myself how much money I want to gamble at that moment just to get my yayas out. Usually the answer is $0. I have gotten burned out on loud/fast rules shit. Thanks for the tips, man. Thoughtful discussions of appropriate driving demeanor are good for the community.
