What about when cyclist go abreast instead of in a line? Must the cars swerve for them? Cyclists seem to expect we must slow down to 10km/h when a car is coming from the front.

Most cyclists nowadays just cycle in the middle of the road which is for vehicles. They should have specific places where they can cycle or special lanes . Not to cycle in the road, as sometimes on a single lane road where there is an oncoming vehicles , it is not easy to shift over for a cyclist on a road for vehicles.
Cyclists have been pleading for more bike lanes for a long time. You can’t blame them for not having bike lanes, you can only blame government for that.
Not wanting to be a box here, but there is no law that forces a cyclist to cycle in the gutters so that cars can have space to pass. The law allows a cyclist full and equal access to the use of the road as for a car. The fact that a cyclist chooses to ride as far to the side as possible is merely a courtesy to all other road users and for his/her own safety.
If there is an oncoming vehicle you shouldn't attempt to overtake a cyclist. The reason cyclists cycle in the centre of the lane is to prevent drivers attempting to pass them within the same lane, as it's unsafe.

Just a question, I am not a cyclist and do not know what cyclists go through but is it not better to cycle and face oncoming traffic? This way at least one gets to see the vehicle to have a chance to avoid contact with the moving vehicle.
As runners, we always make a point of running into traffic for that reason - although even on races with closed off roads I've been close to being taken out by cars many times, not to mention being chased by barking dogs when people leave their gates open. But for cycling, by law they have to stay on the left as the rules of the road apply to all wheeled vehicles.
It is not allowed. Pedestrians need to walk/ run facing traffic and if cyclists did the same, they would hit pedestrians because pedestrians will most certainly not be able to see or hear a cyclist coming behind them. When cyclists ride with traffic, pedestrians can see them when oncoming.
After visiting other parts of the world where cyclists are respected and drivers give space and are patient, I’ve come to believe SA is just so full of impatient and selfish drivers, our society is so car-centric and this leads drivers to believe they have a right to the road. We can’t get people to drive safely at all, never mind around cyclists who have no form of protection. Everyone needs to take a chill pill, sit back, pass when it’s safe to do so, it’s not that hard. You see runner running on the road and you go around them, a taxi stop in the road you go around it but you see a cyclist and you go close to them?
The UK has recently changed their laws, whereby there is an hierarchy of responsibility on road users. So, Pedestrians are the top of the hierarchy, with cyclists next, etc, etc. So any incident will invoke the onus of responsibility the lower down the hierarchy you are - i.e. if you are a motorist, and you knock over a cyclist, the onus is on you as the motorist to prove your innocence, as opposed to the cyclist to prove your guilt, in the case of an incident like this.
As a cyclist I always ride on the pavement when available and accept that the road belongs to the motorists and that needs to be respected for my own safety.
My question is, "Are cyclists legally allowed to operate their bicycles on public roads?" Motor vehicles must undergo a roadworthy test and must be issued with a roadworthy certificate, must carry a licence disk, a SANS compliant reflective number plate (which makes the vehicle much more visible from behind) and of course a headlight and a taillight. Motor vehicle drivers must undergo K53 training and must hold a valid driver's licence, which must be renewed every five years. Motor vehicles must be registered on the NATIS system and motor vehicle owners must pay a yearly licensing fee to renew the license of the vehicle. None of these rules apply to bicycles. Does this not mean that bicycles, which are being operated on public roads are being done so illegally? I've often wondered about this.
Maybe if all children learned road skills by starting on a bicycle they would be more careful of cyclists as adult car drivers and aware of cyclists problems
Some cyclists also need to understand road etiquet. When they ride two or three abreast and take up half the lane and then get upset with drivers. A law should also be passed on that and those that dont obey should be fined.
As a commuter and sports cyclist I can feel the attitude expressed by some of the commenters here towards bicycle riders on the roads. Also - I'm not a cyclist - I'm a father, a son, a brother, a breadwinner, a health professional as well as a person on a bike - when you pass me in your 2 tonnes of metal and plastic pass me as if I were your child or your father please.
@@GreaseJB I have cycled on tiny roads in the UK and Scotland, cars wait until it is safe to pass and they still give a gap. The main difference? Respect. They respect your life and know that waiting a few seconds to pass won't change their day. If you are late for something then waiting to pass safely won't change anything. If a taxi stops in the road do you drive into or or around it? If a runner is running in the road do you drive over them or pass them wide?
In my area, most cyclists don’t obey traffic signs or rules. It’s unfortunate because the road is for all but most cyclists have painted themselves in a bad image therefore when innocent people get hurt people are already desensitised to the topic. Respect each other.
Speaking from personal experience with cyclists on the roads... Often I have needed to turn (with alot of traffic behind me) & they cross the roads without stopping making it so dangerous + all over the side walks where pedestrians have to walk in the streets, so dangerous.... I have complained about cyclists taking over the roads.... Accidents are awful and unessary... They need to go and cycle where there are no drivers or pedestrians.....
Interesting comment from a couple of perspectives. A pedestrian, cyclist or other vehicle going straight will always have right of way over a turning vehicle. You might be scared of the traffic behind you, but unfortunately, you still have to wait for them, on foot or on a bicycle. Lots of cyclists have been calling for more and better bike lanes for many years. Unfortunately, cyclists that commute to and from work can't really just "go and cycle where there are no drivers or pedestrians" - they might need to get to the same area you need to be, just a different mode of transport. You can't really complain about them "taking over the roads" if they have the same right that you do to be there, no?
If cyclists stop riding in the centre of the road or even block the whole road as a group, surely they will be much safer! I feel really sorry for the injured parties and hope they get real justice. There are however very self-righteous riders, though, as if they are looking for trouble on purpose, which I fail to understand.
Perhaps I’m wrong but,… as a driver slow down (if there is oncoming) and pass the cyclists at a safe distance (roads are wide enough). Even if the cyclists are wrong. Everyone gets home.
How often do drivers on our roads all stick to our driving laws? There are more rogue drivers than rogue cyclists on our roads and who is more of a danger, a cyclist or a driver?
It's been proven that riding single file and hugging the kerb is more dangerous than riding wide because it forces drivers to slow down and safely pass. I realise this is frustrating for the driver, but stats don't lie and sometimes they just need to deal with it. no?
Inmy opinion cyclists should cycle in the middle of the lane. It means they are more visible to drivers from a distance and it also prevent drivers overtaking them within the same lane. I'm in the UK and our traffic rules state cyclists should ride in the centre of the lane for those reasons.
I don't understand why cyclists are allowed on roads like this one. They're not allowed on freeways where is generally plenty of space - why are they allowed on narrow roads like this, and for example on the road that goes from Simonstown to Muizenberg.... it's narrow and there is no way you can pass one and a half metres away from them if there is oncoming traffic,, and if there are cyclists going both ways it's impossible. Chapman's Peak is another one, and the coastal road from Hermanus to Gordon's Bay. Some cyclists are just so arrogant and ride 2 and 3 abreast on these roads as well. Its extremely stressful driving along these roads when there are cyclists. Better to cycle somewhere safe.

reading the comments it seems that some drivers think its okay to knock a cyclist because of a cyclist not riding according to their standards? Cars have much more power , better maneuverability, better visibility vs a cyclist so drivers should be more alert and patient. If drivers just have patience when they see a cyclist it will help alot on the roads. Also, drivers being distracted on mobile phones is the biggest issue I have when on the road. Even if we ride in single file, if a driver is not focused on the road it means potential accident.
I've been driving cars for 43 years and thousands of kilometers. So many cyclists do not keep to the side of the road an5they ride side-by-side instead of SINGLE FILE. That is seriously contributory negligence for accidents involving cyclists. Carte Blanche should also make a program of how negligent and wilfully dangerous cyclists ride on busy roads. Irresponsible. Ignorant to potential dangers. Hoot at them - they give you the FO finger.
In the past there used to be licences for bicycles. I see the guy had a light but he was riding along side his partner. Also in traffic school as a child we were taught to ride towards on coming traffic, not with your back to the cars. I personally think cyclists should also be more abiding the rules of the road. How often do the signal, when they turn. How often do they just cycle through intersections with out stopping. The current condition ls of our roads with all the heavy transit the last thing I would like to do is be a cyclist in the chaos. Nonetheless I wish the gentleman a speedy recovery and hope he will be, ok.
We need to look and honestly see why and how the accident happened I believe that the video shows clearly that both cyclists and the driver of the vehicle are both responsible for what happened there Also the Road Departments are also blamed for those type of accidents because no visible road signs to inform the cyclists and drivers of BE AWARE OF ACCIDENTS And honestly speaking many times some cyclists driving on the middle of the roads than if a driver asks look what are you doing they completely start with profanic words insulting the drivers regardless if a female or a male driver People must look at this specific video and accident to see who is in the wrong To me, both sides are wrong
I always try to be safe behind the wheel and I don't want to hurt anyone but there really is not space for cars and cyclists on some roads. At some places the roads are so narrow, the only way you can overtake the cyclist going into the lane with oncoming traffic!! I also see plenty of cyclists who don't obey the traffic rules and they don't need a licence or register the bike. Some also don't drive in a straight line and I just hope the person does not fall in front of my car. I don't condone reckless driving and they should be jailed, but cyclists must realise the road is full with fast moving cars. An accident can happen really fast.
I do agree with you, however, just be patient. We all get home, that 5seconds it takes you to wait is not worth your life or someone elses' life. Where are you in a hurry to?

Why do cyclists cycle next to each other into the driving lane instead of cycling in a line? Truth is many of them have little consideration for vehicles (thus fellow society members) and the entitlement followed by aggression in UNACCEPTABLE.
Because when cycling in a bunch, it is easier for the ride captain to manage the group. The bunch is also responsible for switching to single file on roads that are narrow. Truth is, motorsits also have very little consideration for cyclists.
Yawn, why do most drivers drive like idiots? More bad drivers than bad cyclists out there. Two cyclists side by side aren’t going to cause you any harm but being an impatient driver and driving close to them for fun can cost their life. @@adrianlouw2499 I don’t even know how to reply to that comment as it makes no sense? You’re saying they do cycle in a line, yes they do? What’s wrong with that? But be honest people, driving in South Africa is like being in the old Wild West, and as for Law Enforcement.....🤣🤣🤣
You need to stop cycling in mid morning and afternoon traffic and then we would see you as a human.
@@GreaseJB I have cycled on tiny roads in the UK and Scotland, cars wait until it is safe to pass and they still give a gap. The main difference? Respect. They respect your life and know that waiting a few seconds to pass won't change their day. If you are late for something then waiting to pass safely won't change anything. one word, corruption
People are getting late 😂
Not sure what's funny about this?
If cyclists stop riding in the centre of the road or even block the whole road as a group, surely they will be much safer! I feel really sorry for the injured parties and hope they get real justice. There are however very self-righteous riders, though, as if they are looking for trouble on purpose, which I fail to understand.
How often do you see cyclists riding in single line like they are legally required?
Perhaps I’m wrong but,… as a driver slow down (if there is oncoming) and pass the cyclists at a safe distance (roads are wide enough). Even if the cyclists are wrong.
Everyone gets home.
If illegal, yes frustrating, still doesn't give one the right to collide with them (I'm not saying you are saying that).
I realise this is frustrating for the driver, but stats don't lie and sometimes they just need to deal with it. no?
A mere unknown polo driver is able to get away with such murderous act and you expect Mashatile blue light goons to face any repercussions? 😂 Goodluck
We must be patient on the roads, both cyclists and drivers. Cyclists please also don't cycle in the middle of the road.

Still didn't learn, knocked twice 😮😂😂
reading the comments it seems that some drivers think its okay to knock a cyclist because of a cyclist not riding according to their standards? Cars have much more power , better maneuverability, better visibility vs a cyclist so drivers should be more alert and patient. If drivers just have patience when they see a cyclist it will help alot on the roads. Also, drivers being distracted on mobile phones is the biggest issue I have when on the road. Even if we ride in single file, if a driver is not focused on the road it means potential accident.
You dont cycle with your back facing cars😢
Unfortunately it’s impossible to cycle the other way, with lanes and timing, etc, it just doesn’t work
I've been driving cars for 43 years and thousands of kilometers.
I thought the Western Cape was the best province because it is run by the DA?
Don’t be so ignorant. What are you hoping to achieve by saying this?
In the past there used to be licences for bicycles.
I see the guy had a light but he was riding along side his partner.
Also in traffic school as a child we were taught to ride towards on coming traffic, not with your back to the cars.
I personally think cyclists should also be more abiding the rules of the road.
How often do the signal, when they turn.
How often do they just cycle through intersections with out stopping.
The current condition ls of our roads with all the heavy transit the last thing I would like to do is be a cyclist in the chaos.
Nonetheless I wish the gentleman a speedy recovery and hope he will be, ok.
We need to look and honestly see why and how the accident happened I believe that the video shows clearly that both cyclists and the driver of the vehicle are both responsible for what happened there
Also the Road Departments are also blamed for those type of accidents because no visible road signs to inform the cyclists and drivers of BE AWARE OF ACCIDENTS
And honestly speaking many times some cyclists driving on the middle of the roads than if a driver asks look what are you doing they completely start with profanic words insulting the drivers regardless if a female or a male driver
People must look at this specific video and accident to see who is in the wrong
To me, both sides are wrong
😂😂😂😂
THEY RIDE ON THE WRONG SIDE!!!
Yet cyclists skip red robots in Johannesburg. And ride in the middle of the roads. To be honest I think bicycles should be licensed.
I do agree with you, however, just be patient. We all get home, that 5seconds it takes you to wait is not worth your life or someone elses' life. Where are you in a hurry to?
Cyclists just need to keep off the roads. Here, i said what you all wanted to say but didnt dare to.

At the same time, this guy was NOT cycling two abreast he was behind the other guy with a bright flashing light!
@@kayleightuck Why do most cyclists cycle in a line then? Yawn the entitlement is real...and you're one of them.
@@adrianlouw2499 I don’t even know how to reply to that comment as it makes no sense? You’re saying they do cycle in a line, yes they do? What’s wrong with that? The entitlement is real with car drivers who think THEY own the road. Funny I drive a car and cycle and I don’t mind waiting a few seconds until it’s safe to pass a cyclist. Cycling is a form of transport for some and exercise for others. You’ll won’t cry about the runners who run in the road but you’ll whine about people exercising.
@@sudarshanrampersad6337 What's more important? Riding captain or general common sense safety? Reeks of entitlement amongst SOME cyclist as the majority actually do cycle single file because they understand how its paramount to their own safety. Always a select few arrogant men who feel we must circumvent them well FINE then I won't feel bad when the worse happen and that's the problem.
Cyclists should pay road tax and have registration numbers to be reported for bad cycling behaviour
How bout we make sure people in cars follow the rules first
i totally disagree and think that cyclist has no right over a car they cant just be cycling where they want to they must go do it on a track hence I'm not allowed to race my bike on the streets i have to do it on a track the road is for cars we cant just go play marbles on the highway now can we yes this guys story the driver is at fault but then again look at your video that you uploaded at 8:03 mins in to the video the guys clearly swerving in the road bound to get hit by that car now who is going to be at fault personally it will be safer for them to get off the road
'The National Road Traffic Act sets out certain obligations for motorists sharing the roads with pedestrians and cyclists. Motorists should always be vigilant, and keep a lookout for pedestrians and cyclists who are among South Africa’s most vulnerable road users. Our roads belong to all users and are not just for the exclusive use of those behind the wheel of a car.' - Excerpt from the NTTA - . Not saying your aren't entitled to your opinion and agree it's really dangerous on the roads, but I thought this might be useful for you.
You can’t race your bike, so now everyone else must be punished? Make it make sense Michael
What nonsense are you spewing? Cycling is allowed on our roads, people use bicycles to get places and for recreation and sport. We have professional cyclists who train too, and some of the best in the world train on our roads. Same as road motorbikes are allowed in the road, so are bicycles. There aren’t just “tracks” where we can go cycle away from cars unfortunately, not for road bikes anyway. If other countries all over the world can be patient and share the roads so can we. European countries welcome cycling as a form of transport and fitness and so should we.
@@kayleightuck i couldnt be bothered get off the road and ride on the pavement cars are coming simple if you want lanes protest for bike lanes
nah but why are they cycling on the roads?
Because they have a right to .
Where must we cycle?
Wow boet you really making proud with your clever questions.
u a dum dum ?
Its hard to stomach your ignorance
Cycles think they have the same rights as car drivers
Where they don’t even have a license but yet car drivers must have 1 and must go through a procedure first to get 1
Here they just come and drive and have alot of rights
Use need to drive on the opposite side of the road then stuff like this won’t happen because you will see it come and have alot of time to avoid it
Cars are a giant machine capable of travelling hundreds of km/h where as bicycles are far from the same power and danger. Its not the same and the roads are nog just meant for cars
And they do have similar rights on the road. Its literally the law
We aren't allowed to ride on the opposite side of the road, its by law that we have to ride where we do. Your attitude towards cyclists is why we have so many deaths! Slow down, and take it easy. it takes you 5 - 10 seconds then you can pass safely, but you cant, because people don't have patience or respect for others!
The ignorance in your comment is astounding. I think you need to go read the rules of the road again and try to better understand them.
My friend son was smashed into by a car the swerved across the road and hit him head on. He only just survived and was in hospital for a year with all 4 limbs broken. My son stood on the pavement with his bike to walk across a road with pedestrians . A bus drove onto the pavement and crushed his bike front wheel.
