    So true! We have a rescue Husky, and the MOST important thing for him was to teach him to calm down, to switch off. He's still learning, and we still have a way to go. However, that was a crucial thing to start practicing. There's often the misconception that Huskies need to run for hours, but it's simply not true. Yes, he needs to exercise, but he needs to balance it with mental stimulation AND to learn how to switch off.

      so true I have a 60lb rescue female GSD who is like a hurricane. The breed is active and I hope some of this will wear off when she matures.

      How did you teach them to calm down?

    • @WolfMoon
      @WolfMoon 5 місяців тому

      @aaronhymes123 There were many factors that contributed to that. We went on rarther simple, not too long walks, so Aegon would've been too overwhelmed and overstimulated. At home then, I ignored him and did my stretching. I gave him his breakfast about 30 min later and did my things, didn't give in if he'd demand playing. It was hard at the beginning, but he started laying down and relaxing after a while. We rather went on multiple shorter walks. We didn't play any games that would wind him up. Instead of tagging on a rope, we'd hide treats, pine cones, chewy treats, and such in different places at home and have him look for that and sniff it out. Sniffing is mentally stimulating, and it calms dogs. We also use a snuffle carpet as a game. Anything that stimulates him in a calm way. We do only short training sessions, when we practice commands. Like 5 to 10 min top. And we make sure at least twice a weak, we have a very chill day, shorter walks, less action. I used to go jogging with Aegon, but he ended up being more crazy. So I rather go on brisk short walks and make sure he can sniff his surroundings. Also, on our walks, I hide treats or put creamy teats on tree trunks and have him sniff it out. We keep distance from other dogs so he can get used to them. We are now able to reduce the distance and passing dogs is now fine. It used to be difficult. So all these things helped. The thing is, when a dog is stressed, the stress hormones take days to get out of his system. So keeping him less or not stressed at all also helped. It's been a long process. He's with us 10.5 months now and he's such a sweetie, much calmer, more focused, super nice doggo. But it took time.

    I appreciate you and your knowledge. You have given the proper tools to train my corso from 6 weeks to over a year & I’m impressed how much she has grown and influences me daily to learn & do more for her. I’m struggling with the off switch & recall. Honestly I’ve slacked due to chronic migraines & I’m her primary leader. Any positive insights would be appreciated

    GREAT information. -thank you! My rescue is great with " Load up" in the back seat of the car. "Settle" is a something I/we need to work more on. My girl is doing reaL good at "Stay" on her bed but NOT when my son and granddaughter are visiting for their monthly dinner...working on that now as well.

    I have a 4 month old border collie, heeler, catahoula, pointer mix named Trumpet and your channel has helped me with many things. The last time I had a puppy was 1999 so your videos have helped me relearn training a puppy. He's super smart(could sit, shake and jump through a hula hoop at 8 weeks) but can be very stubborn. I haven't come across a video to help me with his biggest problem. He walks great on a leash but when doing something he doesn't want to do, like trying to take him out to go potty, he throws himself on the ground and refuses to stand or walk. If I try to get him on his feet, he rolls on his back and he bites my arms. He's 35 pounds so it's getting harder for me to carry him. He's very treat motivated but even that doesn't work. Any ideas?

    Hi Will I am new to owning a dog and your you tube channel has been my go to for information. We have mastered most of the basics but one thing I could do with some help with is what equipment works best. I am currently using a slip lead bought on ebay for 5.99 it works to a point but does not seem to stay in place like the one you use. Any help would be appreciated. May be a video on equipment bowls, beds leads etc.

    Hay Will! I have a 7 month old Frenchie. He had an incident when I was not at home with my mother. He was chewing a pig ear and tore of a big piece and started choking. Afraid my mother hit him on the back to help him get it up. He did but now he is very reactive to touch, he has never bitten me but now it seems like he doesn’t trust us. Any help?

    My pup picks up commands really fast, the problem is having her obey them until I release her, stay? “Sure thing until I feel like getting up”

    Hi, Will. It might also tell your followers to slowly train your dog everywhere to proof the dog when you can control the situation.
    If I would get a dollar for everytime someone says "But at home my dog does it perfectly" when not listening I would be a rich girl!

    My rotti pup is six months old and WE are going thought an obedience class lol . She is doing very well, except for staying. The trainer said it is an implied stay and to not give the comand stay when she is told to sit or place. Does this seem right ? Thank You.

    • @corymarinan2996
      @corymarinan2996 5 місяців тому +1

      Yep, that's how most trainers teach it. Otherwise, "sit" just means "touch your butt to the ground". Some people will throw in "stay" just to reinforce when they're doing something the dog's not expecting, like in this video, Will walks away from Sully. Hopefully, your instructor is also having you implement a release command, like Will did. Otherwise, an implied stay will be super confusing to the dog.

    Will. I have a 10 week old lab. Absorbing as much content as knowledge as possible. However i am struggling with his biting attacks and settling him. He's not going out on walks yet or puppy classes, so we don't yet have those tools. Do you do any consultancy within your business? Cheers. Kind regards, James.

      All puppies bite. Give them something appropriate to chew on. Make sure they get enough exercise. They will chew on things when bored or stressed.

    • @anglingoldskool
      @anglingoldskool 5 місяців тому

      @@Ilovedogsmorethanpeople thanks for the comment. Working on it. He has 1-2 spells per day where toys do not distract him and he is hell bent on biting my hands hard. Try walking away and legs are then his target. Sometimes draws blood. He does not calm with a collar restraint and only a time out in the crate works, but of course we dont want to associate the crate with punishment.

      When my puppy was in that stage I would pin her on her back, ( like how other dogs do when they play to show dominance) once she goes submissive I let her up, get her to sit so I am in full control then let her carry on about her day. Worked a treat after the second time doing it
