Wage demands are a symptom of inflation, not a cause. Expanding the money supply is the cause, which both Labour and the Tories recognised in the late 70s.
@@mided2119 Prices (including the price of labour i.e. wages) rise when the ratio of liquid money (i.e. spending money) to goods available goes up. That is, either more money chasing the same amount of goods or the same money chasing fewer goods (because less are being produced). Wage demands _on their own_ can't cause a general inflation as without increasing the money supply there isn't more money to pay them. So if, say, the government pushes more money into the system then prices will rise, so wage demands will occur to keep up with the price rises. That's what happened in the 1970s. During the pandemic, the government spent money while people stayed at home, so liquidity went up while production went down. Many of us predicted this would cause inflation and lo and behold, that's what we got. And if the government prints more money (electronically) to pay to people to offset price rises, it will just induce more inflation. That's what has happened many times, for instance in Zimbabwe. You end up paying people £1000000 a week to buy apples that cost £10000 each.
