  • A team of Cambridge social scientists have been conducting research on the world’s largest trial of a four-day working week. Last year, 61 organisations in the UK committed to a 20% reduction in working hours for all staff for six months.
With no fall in wages. The findings suggest that a four-day week significantly reduces stress and illness in the workforce, and helps with worker retention. In a report of the results presented to UK lawmakers, some 92% of companies that took part in the UK pilot programme (56 out of 61) say they intend to continue with the four-day working week, with 18 companies confirming the change as permanent.

Actually, I would say we worked twice as much as hundred years ago. When the 40h work week was established, it was mainly based on male workers and most women were still housewives. This should mean 40h/week is set per household.
The idea was 8h work, 8h recreation and 8h sleep per man, literary.
When women started to enter the workspace, the 40h/week was already established as normal and as far as I know, hasn’t been questioned since now but not from this perspective.
I suppose this differ from country to country, but where I live, Sweden, it’s very common to have two full time working parents Burn outs are high, especially amongst woman which still take most responsibility for the household (even if both work same hours) but I’d say it’s a general problem for parents with life work balance. (Realized I haven’t checked data on that in detail yet) And we have some of the most generous parental leave and child care in the world.
Would love to hear your thoughts on this perspective.

Even if our recent ancestors worked more it doesn't mean that we aren't working too much especially if we see the symptoms from it.

How many days and hours are needed to create a feeling of community in a workplace?
That is probably where steady-state will be found.

I believe the minimum to be one day a week and about 3 hours.

how about 2 or 3 days a week? Wouldn't it be better? Creating more jobs!

Wouldn't the easiest way be to have this tested in the University? Maybe move UCU staff to 4 days in job working and nothing else and then see how important they are?

How do you ensure that 20% is used by the employee in lateral thinking, to replace the prescribed working programme based on data processing. The benefits you speak of are your predictions, but you then say that social scientists predictions are often wrong. I am left puzzled 🤔

It's always been about power, not efficiency. What is more profitable than keeping an underclass tired, poor, and depressed? When was the last time these armchair academicians talked to a labourer? Pathetic.

My team and I did talk with many, many employees in these research projects, from labourers to managers.
