I am glad that you listened to the suggestions of the audience. Now many people are modding their keyboard. Very glad that you are building your own community. 100k subs is near the horizon!
I recently purchased this to mod for my daughter. I was surprised to receive a new version, I think. The keyboard already has foam under the PCB and a dampener behind the plate. The stabilizers are tight and out of the box the keyboard sounds good! The red switches are already smooth and silent and seemed to have a light coating of silicon grease but I still lubed the swtches for much better feel and sound. So all I did was a tape mod and I was done. Kudos to RK. 👌
Just bought one off of Amazon and mine was the same! Was all ready to mod but there was already foam and everything as you described. I can highly recommend this board.
@Starmain best way to know without opening it is shaking your space bar The older version has a notoriously bad stabilizer and you'll easily notice if its the old one or the new stable one
@@Xislex I ended up figuring it our it out, mine is the new one, however i kind of broke the stabilizer while trying to lube it anyways, so i will probably end up having to buy a new stabilizer eventually anyways also thanks
I had no idea that modding keyboards was a thing. I'm new to this stuff, but my bf recently built me a beautiful PC and I'm in love. I found your channel yesterday and watched your video on Top 10 mechanical keyboards. I was taken with the Royal Kludge, bought it off of Amazon, and it was delivered to me same day. I'm so happy you have this video on the same keyboard I chose! I already purchased the key caps and switches as recommended in this video (although I watched your video on switches and chose the Jelly black). I can't wait until I have everything else so that I can get to modding my first keyboard!! (Wish me luck)
The rk84 is definitely a keyboard with potential. I think it's a better bet than the keychron k2 unless you are getting that one with the frame on it. Their all plastic versions look way cheaper than the RK84 and I think the lighting options are way cooler here too. I just added some foam and changed the keycaps to the white phantom keycaps from razer, will probably do switches and stabs at some point did a quck lube of the space bar. Super cool mod video!
I am watching this very late but I am curious because you seem like you would know more on this than I would. If I were to put different switches in would it be a deeper sound and less poppy?
As an owner of this RK84 white keyboard, I’m digging doing a mod here is worth it for the appearance. I’ve never been one to do the “holee mod” as from video sound tests, the sound difference is so negligible and only worth the time to lube the stabs imo. But being a “custom keyboard” that’s my personal choice 🥰👍🥳. These modding series have been terrific and the some of the most detailed I’ve come across. Great job once again CTR 🥳🥰. Thanks for doing these videos. Cheers mate 🍻
I have the same board and Akko Lavender Purples. Followed this tutorial but I also did the PE foam mod between the PCB and the plate, and the typing sound definitely sounds more marbly than poppy.
on your recommendation on beginner budget mech KB, I got a Redragon draconic K530. Couldn't be happier, waiting on my Akko switches and lube, still undecided on key caps....thanks again for the content.🔥
Awesome guide! Very easy to understand. New to the mechanical keyboard game but I just got one of these bad boys and some old school Nintendo key caps but wasn’t sure what else to get or do. Stoked to do the mod now. :)
I just got the RK61 but thinking about switching it for the RK84. This is my first mechanical keyboard and I am really excited to learn more. I feel intimidated by this process but maybe someday I’ll give it a try 😅
your channels almost 100k lets goo we can do it before 2022 comes. also mod redragon k599 would like to know what switch you'll try fit in there prob akkos.
If you fill your case with Aquarium foam or any thick foam. To almost full even the battery part. You no longer need to cut your stabilizers. Plus using a packing tape which you shows in 1 of your videos does make it sound really really good.
Did all of these besides the holee mod because i was too lazy and it wouldnt stick from the factory lube on it. i gotta say it was all worth it, I ended up using the medical tape for the tape mod as its a bit thicker than the painters tape. On another board I tried super thick VHB tape and it really sounds good with that but I couldnt cover it entirely with the VHB tape because it was too thick. Thanks for this.
I don't know if you remember me but I've been here watching, I bought my hyperx fps alloy rgb because of your reviews and the quality in the video still goes under appreciated, I am very glad I subscribed at 13k and these videos have been very nice to watch even when not looking for things to buy, can't wait for you to reach 100k
I recently got RK65 with creamy switches, and after replacing keycaps of choice, I still had little bit too loud of a thock. Mods I did were sorbothane sheet (0.10" thickness), tape mod x3, and gently re-lubed switches, and the sound was still little too loud. Went with the Epomaker Sea salt switches for ultimate silence while typing since the keyboard was for my work setup from home, and could not be more happier. I would recommend for anyone trying to stay on budget to go with Epomaker Sea Salt switches for the silence if keyboard will be used in office area (home/work) - because they are ultimately super silent and do not cost arm and a leg (like Durock or Gateron Black Ink v2)
i have the RK H81 with their Sky Cyan linear switchers, great keyboad, even the stabs have no rattle and stand quite firm on the plate. RK makes some good keyboards
I just got my RK84 and I was going to add foam but mine came with foam already in the case and between the pcb and metal plate. I think Royal Kludge may have updated the S/N that starts with 22
Love your channel! I can't wait to get my RK61 in a couple of days! It'll be the first keyboard that I'm modding. IDK what my first switches will be yet. Hoping to watch more of your videos. :D
I was skeptical about the modding the stabs, but I just did it and holy cow does it make a difference. I haven't even gotten to the foam, painter's tape or even changed the switches because I'm still waiting for amazon to deliver. I'm new to customizing keyboards I had no idea that even just modding the stabilizers make it sound so much better
Lubing switches is a real pain and really time consuming. With my Drevo Calibur V2 Pro i tried spray lubing the first time and man, the result ist amazing! The only downside is, you need to wait 2-3 days until everything is really dry. Maybe you could show people how to do that too ;)
of all the keyboard reviewers and mechanical keyboard diy'rs on the youtube, you are the only normal one, rest of them seems like they can use some help on addiction and craziness
I have so much respect and appreciation for you. This looks time consuuuuummmmmiiiiinnnnngggg lol. Thank you for sharing. I probably won't be modding mine any time soon lol.
Honestly, you're right, these Vintage Whites turned out sounding more like a typewrite than any other switches I've heard... I wonder though if the Machas or Radiant Reds would produce the same sound. They're much firmer, so they would also give that typewriter feedback I think. The whites are perhaps too soft for that. Anyway, great video and thanks for all the buy links! Especially for including international ones, as it's often impossible to find everything that's shown in some videos!
This is my first board, it was a bummer that it came ever so bent in the mail, the board wobbles when typing. Just stuck some plastic sheets underneath one of the feet and fixed it lmao. Thanks for the tutorial, most I'll probably do for this kb is probably modding the stabilizers, and save up for another board to mod more
can you please do a review/unboxing of the RK68 Pro, I have BARELY seen any videos about it and I just ordered it last week and its my first mechanical keyboard. I would love to see a video about it please CTR! Your top budget mechanical keyboard video is what got me into this & great video as always :D
Nice guide! But you make it look easy 😉 My stabs are really jammed in the board, I only got one out. They are a lot smaller irl.. But after fiddling with it for a while it's quite smooth.
Watching this with my Akko 3068B and it sounds almost exactly the same. I have mine at stock since I just got it and want to "enjoy it" before modding but overall the board with jelly pinks is simply amazing stock and I probably will only do the basic foam, tape and stabs; nothing else needed for now imho. Althought the backspace and enter keys do break the sound profile sadly. Great content as always
i prefer the palm rest to be larger than the keyboard. if you are using the arrows for example your palm will rest out of the palm rest if it's the same size.
This video just so happened to drop right before I bought my RK84! Starting to mod it now. Everything but switches.. I just have no idea what I want yet other than linear and something that won't interfere with RGB colors....
Hi NEW SUBSCRIBER HERE. I ordered RK84 but just want to change the keycaps. Will Akko Black nd pink keycaps compatible to the stock red switches comes from the RK84? Thanks
This is my first time modding and I got this keyboard on prime day! Is having the EVA foam over the battery safe? I read that the tape (tempest) mod could cause the battery to overheat and blow up but with the EVA foam mod being done this way it also seems the EVA foam is covering the battery. I just want to make sure what I'm doing is safe and I don't have to worry about my keyboard going up into flames when I'm away from home.
I would recommend to cut an open space for the battery. EVA foam or not, better safe than sorry. As the battery itself also serve as an object that make the keyboard sound less hollow so putting foam over it is not needed in my opinion.
Hello! I bought the rk84 because of your review on it and I'm very happy with it! i have a question tho. why is my letter q blinking white when charging?
Hello guys, i just bought my rk 84 from amazon from the spanish supplier, and when it arrived, i popped out some keycaps , and realised mine has a black pcb, and came prefoamed what seems from factory. It has black foam between the plate and the pcb, and in the bottom of the case too. I mean it sounds amazing as it is, its just really weird as i dont find any video where the keyboard arrived like this. Has anyone got the prefoamed keyboard like me?
Oh my god you are literally God sent. I just got my rk84 and have been looking all day for proper guides.
Yeah, using his RK61 video and adapting the minor differences would have been to much for you, I agree ... 🙄
As if this is the only proper guide lmfao
