Leez and Ollounder the underrated genius music producer duo in K-Pop. They keep experimenting new sound and style in music with passion, not just for the sake of entertainment.
and the fact how they stepped on different sounds but still has that core element to it! mindblown! i just realized lately how Scream, BOCA, and Odd Eye has that mechanical theme or technological sound to it knowing that the trilogy is about cyber bullying which happens in the media. and now with MAISON & VISION it sounds industrial relating to the environmental concept of the trilogy
Considering how much of Dreamcatcher's titles tracks have overarching stories and narratives, it totally makes sense they would stick to patterns for those eras! Very cool to see it laid out.
About the change in style and tempo, I'd recommend two other songs: 'Rising Sun' by tvxq and 'Bada Boom' by Solar and Moonbyul(though this one is more of a tempo change)

Why did they do this? because this is one of secret ingredient to stay relevant. LEEZ and Ollounder are trying soo hard to change their sound without straying away from Dreamcatcher style and should be more appreciated more. 8:35 And i love how this video mention about the amazing vocal production. I've been noticed about their amazing vocal production since beginning but no one seems to realized it. Besides an amazing works from LEEZ and Ollounder, i think Dreamcatcher's amazing and diverse vocals what's makes Dreamcatcher's songs so good to listen to. Their vocals have it all from deep to high vocals from power to soft vocals. Anyways, i'm really glad that Dreamcatcher and everyone from DCC are consistently doing a good job. Their consistency led Dreamcatcher to climb the step one by one to the top. You’re right about their vocals being incredible - the songwriting is of course fantastic, but one also needs great skill to perform these songs and Dreamcatcher always deliver on that front!
I mean, it's OK for me to have gotten into the group for a certain sound and style and be kind of sad to see them move away from it slightly. I'm happy for them to evolve, I just personally prefer the old way. The rock genre has infinite variety; it could have been innovated on pretty much forever without needing to dip into the EDM elements they employ now. And what bothers me about that is that, while it is in many ways more advanced and sophisticated than what they were doing before (at least what they were doing before Piri), it's less far away from the kpop mainstream. I objectively think their songs are every bit as good for the most part - at least their title songs - but I still want the old sound back and I probably won't be able to shake that mentality. There was something truly exhilarating about the pure heaviness of something like Good Night that I just don't feel any more.

I would want to see you analizing lovelyz's music identity, you know the heavy synths, with lots of strings arrangements and the clear 80s-90s jpop inspiration.
9:27 oh wow, the fact that maison and vision's chorus are actually similarly structured is blowing my mind. I actually favor vision, i had thought maison didnt have much of a punch for me, and that vision is "different"...but now that you point out the similarities, im having a crisis lol.
From what I noticed, Maison has more of that dramatic effect (that piano during the bridge is pretty good) while Vision is more rock or industrial (more on heavy guitars). Both of them have similarities and also have differences! I think another factor is the melodies and key signatures they used but I only know a little about music theory so I can't really explain it lmao
A really nice video analyzing their sound :) especially for me who's really curious about this things, so thank you for making this! Speaking of patterns, I noticed there's also one during the Dystopia Trilogy (well technically only the two of it lol). In Scream and BOCA, the choruses mostly have instrumental in them, the pre-chorus is like the calm before the storm? (it slows down before it drops), and Dami and Gahyeon's rap verses back-to-back. But in Odd Eye, they did it differently with the chorus having more lines/singing, the pre-chorus being a build up, and only Dami rapping. Now I wonder if they're also going to do it in the Apocalypse Trilogy, so let's see! Back to their sound, I also LOVE the piano and strings with the guitar rock sound. Hoping they will do more of it in the future. Anyway, thank you again for making this video :>

Amazing analiz over the Dreamcatcher music, the amount of theory going on with DC music is insane they are not making only music they also making art, its amazing
thanks for the video. 🙏😁 Your explanation is very good, looks difficult but the explanation is very easy to understand. I learned a lot from this video. And especially dreamcatcher is my favorite group, so using dreamcatcher songs for me makes it easier to digest the information you convey.
I honestly have to disagree about where you divided the two eras. I would put the split at Scream instead of Piri since, as you mentioned, Deja Vu is much more in the old style, and while Piri definitely experiments with instrumentation a fair bit, it's still a guitar-first track fundamentally. Scream is the first title track to leave the rock world and venture into EDM, and while rock elements have come back many times, they haven't done a pure rock song as a title track since (excepting Endless Night, which ends the old era just as Scream begins the new one).
Thank you for your comment! This is certainly an interesting argument, and one we considered as well when making this video. When it came to Piri, the devil was in the details for us. There are a lot of subtle elements in the instrumentation which seemed new for Dreamcatcher. Piri’s verse uses EDM drums in the verse while until now they had been using rock/live drums. The clap buildup we hear in the intro and prechorus are also something very typical for EDM buildups, but not something Dreamcatcher’s title tracks include at this point. We hear pads and arps which we are more used to hearing in electronic genres, so far they had been using pianos and strings. The little vocal chops in the chorus, and the whistle sample are also quite novel for their discography at this point. This isn’t to say you’re wrong, however. Piri is still very guitar heavy and utilises dynamics in a similar way to their older tracks, just with some new instrument choices. Scream on the other hand takes these new sound choices and leans heavily into its EDM drop! The line is blurry and ultimately in the ear of the listener, so there are no “wrong opinions" here. And we absolutely would love a heavy Japanese comeback soon. 😁
First of all, I want to congratulate you on how good this video is, and I’m also very impressed that I see such an analysis video on Dreamcatcher🖤 I have been a fan ever since their debut, and have known them ever since MINX. However, I kind of feel like they’re in a limbo with their songs, starting from ‘Odd Eye’. I’m mainly reffering to the b-sides. While I don’t mind variety in an album, I do mind cohesiveness, and I feel like they lost that. When you look at ‘BEcause’ and ‘Maison’ it just feels like the b-sides are detached from the main title track and that really saddness me because you can tell that they are trying to appeal more to the general public (which I guess worked with ‘Maison’). Off their new album, I was very surprised with ‘Vision’ and ‘Fairytale’, I enjoyed them a lot. Hopefully, the last installment from the ‘Apocalypse’ era is gonna be even better. Also I need more japanese songs, I need the jrock and jmetal back from them.
It's kinda funny, after Tree of Language came out I really didn't appreciate how good the bsides were. And then when Lose Myself came out I thought the album was their worst and I honestly still think that (although that's not saying much since this is Dreamcatcher we're talking about). So I kinda felt really bad about Dreamcatcher bsides overall and nothing from Road to Utopia or Summer Holiday was able to dissuade me from that, even though Odd Eye and BEcause were both bangers. Apocalypse Save Us was actually the album that brought back the old Dreamcatcher bside magic for me, and caused me to realize that it's really only Lose Myself that's as weak as I felt. I also realized that since 2020 I was coming down from the high of End of Nightmare and Raid of Dream, two of the most insanely good mini albums in kpop history, and my standards were probably too high even for Dreamcatcher. Because there was honestly no way they could have followed what they did in 2019. I'm kind of still sad about the turn away from heavy rock that started with Scream, but I objectively think their songs are still just as good. Except Lose Myself. Boca is overrated within the fandom and I will die on this hill lol. I def agree it would be nice to get more Japanese music, because while Eclipse didnt necessarily satisfy my longing for metal Dreamcatcher, another song in the style of Endless Night absolutely would.
@@plasmakitten4261 for me things started getting rocky with ‘road to utopia’. I dont mind them not doing the same genre of music, however, as i mentioned, the bsides just started to lack. Im really hoping that the next album is gonna be better and its gonna get them back on track. Also i wish they would collab with more japanese artists or be reffered for anime soundtracks, cause i think they would be a bigger hit in japan than korea. If only their company saw that as well…
One thing that really stick out to me is how their production team using storyline as their overarching theme. Before Dreamcatcher it's unusual for KPop to have story (it's much more common in the 4th gen tho). Usually they have some kind of vibe like Twice or Blackpink, but they don't have a clear story to deliver to their audience. The MV, stage, costume, even their make-up is there to deliver the story to us. The way they using a song to tell their their narrative reminds me to many of vocaloid song series, i.e. Daughter of Evil, or Children's Record. Honestly, I kinda hope they comes back to their Chase Me era sounds once more in the future. Because, as much as I like that era, their voice at that time is not as strong as their Apocalypse era. I just hope to hear much more metal music from them with their best voice..
Wow, I learnt so much new things. The way you connected each songs throughout the sounds impressed me and also the part where you prove each your statement allows me to understand your video even better... Thank you for bringing lights to us. Totally appreciate this video
The whole thing will easily get noisy if they mess up the vocal melody. But fortunately they got great team of production. Been listening since Chase Me and almost every songs in their albums are in my playlist.
Dreamcatcher is the DREAM. The current top 3 exciting groups for me is Mamamoo, Dreamcatcher and G-Idle. They constantly creative, evolving and never boring. Kpop has become a bit stagnant because the powers that be are boring old farts (looking at SG, YG & JYP) who think they know what the audience wants to listen and watch. Placing importance on looks, visuals and choreography only and being too strict and controlling. That's why I am so disappointed with Blackpink right now.

This should be heard by those people saying that their songs is all the same
True haha 😊
We’re certainly overdue a Japanese comeback haha, hopefully we get one soon!
If only their company saw that as well…
Wonderful analysis to their sound evolution! Great work!

@@serpentirismusic Ohhh no, nothing 😊❤️
Wow!! This is such a well done video. Thank you, the music geek in me is glowing

Omg i loved this so much!
can you make a similar video for gfriend ??‼️
Good idea!
Is it weird if i want them to try something ragaetton related😭
Boca has some elements of that but it’d very interesting to see them lean into the genre even more!
❗VOTE FOR DREAMCATCHER ON MAMA❗
but Leez left DC Company :(
Hopefully he would still work with the girls!
“woke” song lyrics 😎
