Indie folk masterpiece… a great composer and multi-instrumentalist. This was my high school album obsession. And the rumours that he would do an album for every state 😅 thanks for the review!
This is very original and creative. I love it!!! It reminds me a bit of British band "Alfie" at times. Brilliant, added to playlist. Beautiful scoring.
Watching you listening to this album I saw your emotions at times... That's valuable to see in another person. Thank you, friend. I had the same emotions listening to it myself
Thank you for this reaction. In 2008, I was in Montreal. My mother had just died (she was elderly and had cancer, so not unexpected) My sister went back home to NJ after a few weeks of dealing our mum's belongings, etc. Anyway, I was in her now empty apartment with a mattress and a radio, and listening to a CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) show called Tapestry, which explores spiritual issues. They played Chicago by Sufjan Stevens. I was so incredibly moved by this song, perhaps because of my mum's death. Anyway, upon returning home to Vancouver, I got Sufjan's "Illinoise" album, and wow! The whole album is wonderful and, as you noted, filled with historical and cultural references. Here is a link to his performance at Austin City Limits: ua-cam.com/video/pga0GOT6gcE/v-deo.html
casimir pulaski day is something else. sufjan is an incredible songwriter and artist and him telling his personal experience and his first encounter with death was heatbreaking.
