Originality isn't entirely dead, but it is very hard to achieve these days. Though, at the end of the day, it isn't so much about how original an idea is, but rather how well that idea is executed, since great ideas can be ruined by trash execution and bad ideas can be saved by good execution.
I love it when animated films take a moment to showcase the scenery. A flower blowing in the wind, like you said, or a bird flying or leaves falling. It reminds me to appreciate the scenery in the movie and in my own life, and to also admire the beautiful animation.
I had a class in college that focused only on international films it was an amazing class and seeing different ways how films are made and storytelling
It's interesting how you mentioned originality and I remembered how whenever me and my boyfriend watch movies that weren't so well received we do mention that "this wasn't really anything new or original, but we still enjoyed it and don't regret watching it". We also still recommend it to family and friends. Our view on this was always in the lines of "hey if we had a good time who cares if it's super original or not 🤷♀️".

I was also taught that idea of how 'every shot must serve a purpose' was essential in story telling. Although to me, I never felt that meant always pedaling the story forward without any breaks. That blooming flower example you mentioned could technically count as a 'purposeful shot' because it still expands the environment and allows both the characters and audience to take a breather moment. Even entire movies like "Mary Poppins" and "Kiki's Delivery Service" could fall into this idea, since they're more focused on exploring their respective characters and how they go about their daily lives, rather than an on-going plot. This includes things like exploring their neighborhood(s) and doing fun activities. In that sense, those relaxing moments may still be considered 'purposeful' because you're getting immersed into these worlds and seeing how the characters respond to it.
This video was so comforting and showed up - coincidentally - right on time. I agree with everything you said, I just felt so happy listening to what you said because it's so similar to my journey so far and I've been feeling so kind of rushed and lost, I find great comfort in your videos because you're really honest and I find it so refreshing too since you don't make it seem either good or bad and let everyone make up their own mind.
What you said about the moments of silence is so wonderful to hear from someone in the industry because one of the first things I learned in my storyboarding class was that - that every shot needs to progress the story, there has to be a reason for everything - which I agree with at times but it's become quite stressful trying to figure out the why not just for my boards but in general, and I feel like the rush with most shows nowadays has been reflecting in my life because I've been so consumed with work. The reason this point specifically stood out to me was simply because I love those moments, those silent and peaceful moments that I hope to put in my projects in the future because it means so much to me, there's a reason why the Monogatari Series is my favourite and why I'm so inspired by Ghibli films as well. I appreciate you talking about this stuff so much.
Also, I've actually been using the methods you talked about in your other videos because they helped me realise how unhealthy I was being by just working non-stop. The reason partly for why I'm finally calming down more now, and having a less toxic and much healthier view on a lot of things is because of your videos, so I really appreciate them, I've been watching them for a while as well, and I've changed and evolved so much with them and because of them sometimes so I just wanted to tell you how grateful I am for what you do, it's so kind and so helpful and I absolutely love your work.
4:31 YEAH I've seen people not liking Turning Red because "the art style is not realistic". An art style doesn't have to be realistic to be good, AND the fact that the style was cartoonish didn't mean that the animation was bad. What I love the most about animation is that, you know, it's not reality
Nothing has ever been original, humans can't make something that hasn't existed before, but we can create original combinations of things, Brazilian Cinderella for example
I couldn’t see the whole picture on my phone so I thought it said “It’s okay to be unicornian.” Instead of “It’s ok to be unorganized.”
Also I love how they made Arcane look like a moving painting even though they probably could have made it look more like live action with the budget. I definitely see resembling live action for like dinosaurs or other extinct animals as cool but at the same time I’ve always dreaded it becoming the most popular kind of animation.

I understand what you mean about the trend towards making animated media look more and more realistic in how it's boarded and textured and lit

That said, I enjoyed the realism in the movie Guardians of Ga'hoole, mostly because even with the characters being talking animals, the hyper-realism gives the characters and world a more grounded, feel (without making the characters look uncanny), while being a LOTR-esque epic fantasy
Your videos are really great and informative to listen to, especially since I'm a general audience member and not someone in the animation industry. I really liked your point about how not every shot needs to move the story along, some can just help establish the vibe. It made me think about how sometimes I'll watch a tv show or movie where the plot isn't amazing, but I enjoy it anyway because I liked the overall vibes or just the visual experience.
I generally have a problem with direction movies started to go to. There is more and more action in one film. And I'm not necessarily talking about action-films, just plots in general. All films are so fast-paced that every scene have to move plot forward because otherwise it won't be able to fit in this 1:30 frame. I actually hate that. Every 4 seconds, they are trying forcefully to grab our attention. The same goes for books. I feel like we are not getting enough time to breathe and feel the world around. It bothers me, especially in fantasy. We are just hopping around major plot points and stripped of real immersive experience. Or maybe I'm just too old-fashioned? And too big of Miyazaki fan? ._.
I always look forward to your videos Michelle. I especially love this comic with your grandpa and dog. I could really feel the emotion in this one. I know if I did not have my bunny Zephyr with me I don't know what I would do.
My drawing skills make me feel safe, my drawing speed makes me concerned.

Can't disagree more with the "originality" comments.
The thing people don't understand is that a story is an experience, not a series of Xs and Ys.
If you boil stories down into Xs and Ys, then you literally aren't referring to the story itself.
Story is not its summary or even its concept, its always the final execution.
If you say " aw that was just a story of man vs technology" you aren't even referring to the story anymore.
No two people have ever created the same exact story. Even when they were trying to. They can't.
Statistically its unlikely. If you asked 100 people to write a 10 word story, chances are in the billions slim, that any two of them will have the same 10 words.
The "nuiance" IS the story. The experience is the story.
Have you experienced everything there is to experience in the universe?
Then how on God's green earth do you know there are no more original ideas? Ideas that haven't been done?
Is really the most arrogant stereotype the world has come up with yet. And people who buy into clearly either don't believe in themselves enough, or they just CAN'T think outside of the box.
Worst part of it is...
With the way creativity works...
If you believe you can't, you won't try. and if you don't try you'll never achieve.
People who think there is nothing outside the box, never seek to go there and thus we get more people making generic ideas, because no one is willing to believe new ideas are out there.

I hear there's only 37 plots possible to make and I get it, because where there might be more options, those options might not peak anyones interest. Also sometimes it is good to sit in familiarity. We don't always need to be emotionally zapped, sometimes we can be in a familiar world for a moment.
I think I agree with a lot but I definitely have my on chaotic way of dealing with things as an animator and comic artist lol keep up the great work and stay awesome 😁✌
No Country For Old Men is one of the greatest films I've ever seen but there are plenty of great international films too. One is, "City of God." Brazilian film. My favorite film of all time.
I think that keeping examples simple like with Westerns (or any one genra) is a good idea only to the extent of avoiding confusion for beginners first learning film techniques. If you try to flip examples too many times the class may confuse techniques with stylistic variation. There's no reason for this limitation once the concepts are understood though.
I'm at a bit of an impasse w/ thinking of pursuing storyboarding w/ all of the new deal 4 animation stuff going around. Lotta stories of crazy work demands & short turn around times have me second-guessing I suppose 😅 But this was very informative and interesting!

Yes I am in full agreement with your points you covered. At our art school in Seattle, most of the examples for story telling, lighting, and general cinematography, were focused on western films as the primary example. I find it actually ironic that everyone claims we should be so diverse in our ways that we actually are not practicing diversity in our actions. I feel western culture is very centered on: it’s gotta be BIG, AWESOME, COOL, and IMPRESSIVE! (Going along with your point on action films). I was more transfixed on films that were not only a wonderful story but also had contents that I don’t get to experience in every day life. One of my favorite movies is Memoirs of a Geisha. There is drama of course but also moments of reflection such as her performance on stage, washing clothes in the river and seeing the sheets blow in the wind, or running through the many arches after the gentleman of her dreams gave her shaved ice. I love the insight of another culture. I enjoy having moments of reflection like Hayao Miyazaki had mentioned before. The media is too focused on keeping short attention spans by being continuously engaging and stimulated. But that’s just not how life works. It’s true that there is nothing new under the Sun and it will be almost impossible to create something brand new. Even in peoples desire to “not watch something predictable” they still desire a predictable lifestyle they consume. Saying they’re inclusive but never broadening their horizons, watching football year after year, preferring their action movies, getting into only popular trends… it’s quite ridiculous to me. We are embarking on a generation where the audience wants something new but they themselves don’t try anything new and original. There is something magical to bring to the table in movie productions but too often people are stuck in their own ways. Which is why in our art schooling they still sing the same old song. Thank you for sharing, I enjoy thoughtful conversations!

The amount of shots as a story boarder I’ve had to think about and e forced to think about the subtext especially for snippets that last a few seconds omg lol. Literally can westerners learn to breathe and not always have instant gratification moments. Let the audience breathe. Like you don’t need to be Snyder filler but omg.

I have never heard of most opinions featured in the vid. The one about westerns sounds to me almost fictional, I doubt you can point even to a single animation film that would promote the idea of cowboy movies being superior

I think the use of Westerns as an example makes sense to the extent that you are only introducing techniques. It helps to avoid confusion. For an intro class understanding techniques seems like it would be the most important. I wouldn't use Westerns as the primary example in every class though.

Regarding predictability, I like to compare it it cooking. If you cook the same dish over and over, it tastes less good each time. It's not that the meal becomes bad, but a having a variety of meals will make each meal more delicious.
