I love your video and insight into Bach's piece. I'm a cellist, but I had a 7-string bass viol made for me (a number of years ago) to play continuo for my baroque-flutist husband, and we both just adore its sound. Your sound is fabulous, and I'm benefitting from watching and listening to you play! Thanks for this!
I never realized how intense those lower notes on the _zu schwer_ part really are, especially as they are rapidly intertwined with the upper notes. The effort it takes to turn around the instrument so as to play them correctly is really something to behold! 👏 The whole thing almost brought a tear to my eye! To think this is just one piece in an entire Passion! Bach was really amazing... people will probably still play his music many centuries from now. Thank you for this video, Mr. Manson! I definitely learned something today...
Thanks So good we can at least share music in this small way. I watched a DVD of the John Passion last week and will the Matthew this Friday. Soli Deo Gloria!
This can also be played on the Cello, or Lute-Harpsichord (aka Keyboard Lute) so it's an Aria for Bass Voice, Continuo, and Viola Da Gamba (Cello, or Lute-Harpsichord). The reason Bach writes the Lute parts in Keyboard score instead of Lute tableture is because they're meant to be played on the Lute-Harpsichord aka Keyboard Lute but they do work well on Harpsichord, Pipe Organ, and even Piano. The Lute-Harpsichord is basically a Lute with Keys attached to picks that pluck the strings when the keys are struck. It has a bowl shaped back like a Lute but the body is alot larger cause for 2 reasons 1) to support the tension from all the strings, 2) to help the low notes resonate better.
