Happy birthday, Ian! 🎂 I agree about rereading Gilead with a paper copy. This book deserves a careful, close reading, and it will spill out a bounty of rewards for you. I don't know if you're aware, but Gilead is the first in a quartet with the same characters and the same town. If you read them all, you're rewarded with a gorgeous, layered, lush view of life in small-town America. I read David Copperfield -- absolutely loved it -- and I'm contemplating The Count of Monte Cristo because a couple of booktubers I love buddy-read it, and both were ecstatic. As far as Little Friend goes, I've not read it but, of course, it's a giant talking point between booksellers. A lot of my coworkers hated it, but the one I trust the most loved it. I guess by "trust the most" I mean the person whose book taste is the most aligned with mine.... 🤷🏻♀️ I read Dandylion Wine in high school -- back in the dark ages -- but I don't really remember anything about it, except that I did really like it. Why did you pick all gigantic, chonky books?!?! Replace some of those with a few 200-300 pg books, and I bet you'll get some buddy reads!

Song of Solomon and As I Lay Dying are def literary masterpieces rich with symbolism but major downers, so make sure you’re in the mood for that with those. And I wouldn’t worry about the chunkiness of Shogun-if you click with it you’ll never want it to end. Also sounds like you should bail on Wheel of Time-the rest of the series is much more like the Great Hunt than Eye of the World
