Behind you 100% I've been painting with inexpensive acrylics for years with the use of TEXTILE MEDIUM. For beginners, you mix it 2 parts paint to 1 part medium. Makes the acrylic stick and flexible. 👍
I have shirts that I painted 40 years ago with Apple Barrel acrylic craft paint, they have been washed 100s of times and still look good with no cracking, the secret is to keep paint layers thin and use a heat gun to set finished shirt
This is my first video ever about painting on fabric. I must say, all of this sounds extremely helpful! I'm looking forward to my first experience with this magical hobby
You, my friend, are a life & paint saver!!! Well, 5 crunchy & scratchy t-shirts & very crunchy pair of sox later…Why I didn’t look you up first, I’ll never know.😵💫Your channel is a Brilliant find! Now, I will frame my crunchy artwork & start over. Much love & enjoy the day. THANX x 10‼️
This is good advice, thank you. I really like your use of colors on the cherry and strawberry on your t-shirt! And wow!- the colors on that denim jacket pop. Great job
I just bought Fabric Paints to paint on clothes and i am really scared to start without knowing where and how i will paint. This video helped me a lot knowing the consequences of painting this and that way. Thank you very much!
Yes there are definitely not much info about this art as well as not so many artists who paint on clothes , so I wanted to explain. Because if not me then who :)
this was literally the first vid i watched on how to pain on fabric and it made SOO MUCH SENSE! now it explains why my fabric design as a child wasnt staying togehter 🙉🙉tysm! your vid helped soo much!
You're right ! A lot of some 'painters' are confusing the Art Painting with cake decorating!! Omg, I feel bad when I see that they're wasting like this the colour!
By far the best and most useful video I have seen. I have a lot of acrylic paint and I figured it can't be that easy. I've tried it and yes, it has made my clothing very stiff. Didn't feel quite right. There's a reason why different paints are created and definitely not to profit from them. Just needed an excellent artist to explain that to me to understand the exact difference. Thank you so much for your useful tips. Most importantly, beautiful art work! I love watching your videos! xx
This is what I've been looking for, every video out there says "what to do when you paint on clothes" and then they proceed to just show you their art work and not explain anything.🙄
Great video, great English! 😘 I went to Las Vegas and seen $500 and $700 jackets. This inspired me to make my own custom clothes from Goodwill. I will be using automotive acrylic enamel with metallics. Later I will add sequins and rhinestones!
I’m glad I found your channel, I’ve been painting in oils, acrylics and other mediums, but never use fabric paint, I have been asked to hand paint face masks, your video is very detailed, informative and inspiring, thanks
OMG just started the video and I can't believe how good the painted jacket behind you is. Wow, it's absolutely fantastic!! You are so good! Okay, I'm going back to the tips now :D
So informative, beautiful graphics and explained in such a cute accent, I've been drawing since 10 and would love to transition into textiles and you've convinced me to take the steps to make it possible 😊keep of the great work ❤
Thank you so much for this video; I will be watching your more recent one ( DO'S AND DON'TS for Painting on Clothes - MISTAKES TO AVOID!) after this! Also, your shirt is cute. _A trip to China sounds nice, if you tread lightly._ ;)
On jeans my paint fades with acrylic but I've learned water down leather paint is my best friend lol and hoodies, punk vests, and shoes it holds up with acrylics ❤
I really liked your video and even chuckled in a couple of parts. I liked it enough to subscribe to you channel. I don't paint on clothes, but I do paint on fabric and then embroider in an abstract way. I then use the fabric to create a cover for my hand created journals. So I am looking forward to using some of your tips and techniques.
It's also interesting to say that fabric paint is just acrylic paint with fabric medium premixed. I only recently started painting on canvas with acrylic paint (before that I made patches with fabric paint) and fabric paint after it dries kinda gets the texture of rubber but acrylic paint gets hard like a soft kind of plastic. Also a tip for every german that reads my comment: Get Marabu fabric paint. If the color is black or white use the regular but if you want to paint on dark fabrics with colours like red get the textil +. Every other fabric paint I tried is shit and started cracking after the first washing process.
I'm so lucky UA-cam recommended your video! I'm about to start painting my clothes and some bags also, and the tips you give are going to be so useful. You got a new suscriber queen
I added fabric softener to my acrylic!! It worked just as good as fabric medium. I just needed to make sure it wasn’t too much. I added half and half and the paint washed off. So I recommend 3 parts paint, 1 part softener. But experiment on an old piece if fabric what ratio is best
Yo, so I was gonna use spray paint for the first try cuz that would be easy. I just wanted to make a simple design on a t-shirt. Thank you so much for posting this video! Im gonna walk to the art store and get what I need instead! Its a bit of a hike but it's gonna be nice to be able to custom make my clothing designs. I'm all about that custom style! Edit: I added another comment chronologically immediately after: "Oh! Also! Instant Sub. [I wanna know more so I can do better designs]"
As someone whos used lots of different types of paints on fabrics, there are acrylics out there that can give good results on fabrics, but you also have to consider how it will react to the fabric youre putting it on. Some fabrics will kinda absorb the paint, others it will sit on top of it. If you arent trying to go through trial and error stick to fabric paints to save your art and time.
I use both. I have had to repair a few because I used too many layers of paint on them, or forgot to iron them to set everything, or forgot to mix acrylic with fabric paint first. WASHING wasn't the problem. It was the dryer that destroyed them.
Thanks for the content, it helped a lot, I am planing to paint a fabric shoe and your video made some things clear for me, the only thing I am still not sure about is what kind of brush should I use, or if that even matters at all
I use synthetic brushes for acrylics. Mostly round brushes. Sometimes flat. Just look for brush which will be comfortable for you to work with (for shoes small sizes are better)
Hello, great video. Which colors are recommended for use on materials that have a lot of elastin, such as lycra. I used dyes for textiles, but they peel and fade when washed
Hey Daria! Thank you for your video... Can I use oil painting for my clothes? I think it's more flexible than acrylics but idk if it has some counter effects
during this lock down I got more time to go back to painting, even though I'm good at painting on paper, painting on t-shirts was tough and after watching this video I realized I've been doing all of these mistakes lol Thank you so much for the advice, I'm subscribing!
Also if you’re using acrylics make sure you mix it with water for the first layer and stretch the fabric so that it sinks in the cotton then for the second layer mix it with a little bit of water

You can use a fabric medium mixed with acrylic paint and it works well for me
do you mix the paint with the medium or you apply the medium like a layer?
@@externalmindset5889 Mix it. Use a ratio of 2 acrylic : 1 fabric medium

Don't use acrylic paint. 9 out of 10 times it washes off. Use paint that is waterproof.
Yeah acrylic is meant to wash out. That’s why it’s great for beginners and children - splash away with no severe consequences on your clothing!
