Jake's chromatics here perfectly capture how he's basically at the same exact emotional keel the entire time- no variance at all. He's just "golly" the entire time and that's about it
Jake absolutely driving people around him insane by just not being super attentive and not being easy to affect emotionally is absurdly funny and relatable
Personally, the scene that brings me the most pain is the one i believe not too long after this where Caliborn talks to Jane... horrible. This one is certainly not far off, though!

Jake has absolutely no social awareness, and because of Jane's own flustered denial earlier on, has absolutely no idea that Jane is into him and hurt every time he talks to her about dirk. It's honestly a testament to how they are as characters. Utterly incapable of just talking things out to a resolution until it explodes. And by the time it does, Jake is so taken by surprise he has literally no understanding of why she's mad in the first place.
