  • Harburg Castle on the Romantic Road is one of the largest, oldest and best preserved medieval castle complexes in southern Germany. About the city of Harburg.
It was first mentioned in a letter in the year 1150. When the 13-year-old Hohenstaufen Heinrich, son of King Conrad III, sent a letter from Harburg to his aunt, Empress Irene, in Constantinople on 8 February 1150, reporting on the upcoming battle against the Guelph Duke Welf VI. Since then it has been expanded and preserved throughout different eras.
Harburg has survived numerous sieges, battles and wars. It has served as a residence and seat of government for rulers, and imperial and royal celebrities have been received there.
It impresses with its many buildings from almost every style era. Buildings from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods can be found throughout the area and indicate the complex's architectural past.
There is no doubt that the castle hill was already inhabited before the Hohenstaufen period (1138-1268). Buildings and sections from the Ottonian (919-1024) and Salian (1024-1125) periods and even finds from the Roman period prove the castle's very early and important location on the hilltop above the Wörnitz.
When the castle was pledged in 1299, it first came into the possession of the Counts and later the Princes of Oettingen. The Counts of Oettingen transformed the castle into one of the most powerful fortresses in the region. Numerous buildings in Harburg were built in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Under the last prince Albrecht Ernst II (1669 - 1731) of the Protestant Oettingen-Oettingen line, the castle complex was expanded into a residence through structural changes in the 18th century. However, only a part, which includes the castle church, the princely building and the hall building, was actually altered accordingly. The character of a fortified castle complex remained.
In it we can take a guided tour of the walls, church, courtroom, prison tower containing the pit (a prison with isolation, dampness and cold) and the heat torture room (sweating room), as well as the room for milder punishments (e.g. for missing church services/mass on Sunday).
