70th anniversary of Mannerheim death. One of the greates man in european history. He was a very humble, true patriot who knew when to step down and when to reappear for the sake of his nation. So rare in his days and so unheard of these days. He is one of my favourite figures in all history of humankind. If I could meet some one from the past, it is quite possible that he would be my choice.

Mannerheim had many great qualities, but he was not humble.

Mannerheim has something 18th century in him. He really reminds me to Admiral Horthy the leader of Hungary. The two persons had a bit simmilar life story too!

@@timoterava7108 State and army leaders can't be totally humble, they are neither saints nor priests, but I think Mannerheim was a humble leader compared to leaders like De Gaulle (his arrogance was maybe his worst fault, for him and for France) Churchill, Pétain, Kennedy, Reagan, etc. Not to mention totalitarian dictators and today's leaders. At least Mannerheim gives from himself a true impression of humility.
However, despite a Finnish background, I'm not the best specialist in Mannerheim, I don't pretend to be necessarily accurate.

On November 1 2020, Tuomas Gerdt, the last living Knight of the Mannerheim Cross, passed away in Helsinki. He was 98 years old. He was given a military funeral in Lappeenranta, South Karelia, with president Sauli Niinistö, Defence Minister Antti Kaikkonen, and Chief of Defence General Timo Kivinen attending. His passing marks the end of an era in Finnish history, as the number of living WWII veterans shrinks year by year.

If you'd walk down a street and asked every one passing by you "Do you know who was Marshall Mannerheim?" Everyone would answer yes.
