      Not a full gigging amp, unfortunately there is a big sound gap when switching channels. Also, while much closer than most SS amps, it does not move air or feel the pushback like a real tube amp does. It's not just about sound, it's about FEELING, which comes first in my book. That kinda matters to me, but it's not like I'd never gig with it, I'd just be doing it as a second to a tube combo, or when I just wanted to grab and go with no pedals.

    The reason it's good is because Line 6 is more committed to engineering a good product with modern processes. It turns out that "just put the best components in it" isn't _actually_ the only way to get things to sound good. This has been known by automobile manufacturers for a long time, who have been snatching up DSP engineers for decades to try and make a 12 dollar set of speakers sound good. And yeah, I mean I have two Two Rocks and a Bartel and I think the HX Stomp plugged into a Catalyst is absolutely fine and certainly cheaper.

    I just bought the 60 ...the best part of this amp is how quick you can dial in the tone you want. It has really responsive eq controls ...just start with one of the amps and between the dedicated boost and your normal gain and treb, bass, mid it takes a few tweeks to get what you are hearing in your head. No space ships and time warp sounds that you will never use just good sounding delays reverbs and modulation. Punchy and loud for a 1x12 open back. Great amp!!

    Took the plunge and got the 100 a few weeks ago after watching a few of your videos. Specifically the ones where you compared/used as a frfr (I'd got the GX 100 about a week before and already had a HX FX) and using the HX as a midi controller.
    Took it to jam with a bassist and drummer and it was plenty loud enough on 50w setting and sounded great. Using the HX FX as a midi controller essentially have me a 3 channel amp.
    At home I plug the Boss in and noodle around on that.
    I think it's a great piece of gear.

    Yes John, you're totally mental in the best way, and I feel lucky to have found your Channel years ago. 😎
    As far as trying other Speakers, if you can't plug the Catalyst into a different Speaker Cab, it might be worth removing one from one of your other Cabs and trying it directly inside the Catalyst. That way, you'll have a better baseline to determine how much is the Amp and how much is the Speaker.

    I’ve awitched entirely to a Catalyst 60 as my main gigging amp. Nearly all of the bands I play with are nearly silent stage (use some monitors, but essentially no amp sound) and the Catalyst has more than ample tone. Honestly, I replaced any of my normal amps, including my beloved Dr Z Maz, and an Iridium in favor of the Catalyst. As you say, John, ridiculously great tone for the money and with a cheap road case, more than sturdy enough
    Impressive bang for the buck.

    Since I have one, I hardly use my tubes like Matchless and Mesa. I bought it as a 'grab and go' amp for rehearsals. I put it on clean with some reverb and delay, rest is pedals. On stage I would still mike a tube amp but I might try going with the line 6 straight from the xlr into the PA.

      Modeling amps have often had speakers that were optimized for them, Hell even Tech 21's better sounding iteration of their all-analog Trademark 60 amp originally had a custom made speaker that was expecting the fact that the SansAmp speaker "sim" was already in the signal path in the power section.

    Just had the 60watt version delivered today. Very impressed! Loud, even on the 1/2 watt setting so I have no doubts it would keep up with a drummer. Essentially purchased as a practice amp but I can see myself gigging with it . Not deep dived it yet but straight out the box I was dialling in good tones. Well worth the money and probably needs to be judged on it’s own merit rather than a Katana rival.. Although I can understand why people would make those comparisons. If it’s this good now imagine a Catalyst Mk II or III. Also just sold my Pod HD500X. Never bonded with it and was beginning to think the modelling world wasn’t for me. Even though I’ve had a number of Boss, Zoom and Line 6 units over the years. Just picked up the Boss GX-100 in part based on your reviews. Boss has finally nailed it. So potentially a great sounding studio, practice, gigging rig for less than a grand, not including the guitars. Anyways, great playing John!

    I’ve had the 60w version for a few months and jammed with a friend who was playing an ES335 through a Fender Deluxe Reverb. He was looking for a smaller (expensive and lighter) tube amp. After hearing and playing through my Catalyst he’s reconsidering. I also felt that the Catalyst didn’t sound inferior to his amp. My only wish is for a better system for on amp manipulation. I got a Catalyst 100 when they came out, and it quickly replaced my Blues Jr as my "daily driver". Not only does the expanded I/O make it a better fit for me, but it is always easy for me to find a tone I like, and the power attenuation actually makes it usable at bedroom levels. The best part? I recently got a second one on sale for $330, and I now have a true stereo amp setup that sounds awesome for less than the cost of most "nice" amps!

    The biggest issue with a real slo-100 is the master HAS to be around 6 or higher, which is devastating loud BUT the amp really blooms there, so it needs an attenuation of some sort. But when it’s there it’s terrific.

      I've owned the Fender Tonemaster Deluxe and the Catalyst 60. I sold the Tonemaster after a year. It is remarkably true to the Fender sound. I parted ways with it because it absolutely choked on higher gain pedals. Once I heard that high gain rizz, I couldn't get it out of my head and began hearing it on low-gain pedals as well. If you want an amp for the roots-rock, Americana style thing, you can't go wrong with the Tonemaster Deluxe.
      I've owned the Catalyst 60 for a few weeks now and have yet to plug a pedal into it or use it outside my house. I'm really happy with the clean and overdrive tones I get. The effects are great, as expected from Line 6. At roughly a third the price of the Tonemaster, I'm totally happy with the Catalyst. I'm looking forward to seeing how it reacts in a band situation.

      The clean, crunch and boutique settings will definitely give you great roots tones (I play the same myself). I have a 58 Custom Shop Les Paul and a G&L Legacy ASAT (tele) that have really hot pickups. I suggest starting with the gain dialled down on those settings and increasing it until you get to that "point of break-up" sound that works well for roots music. That's worked really well for me with those guitars. The boost button can be quite helpful as well.
      There's a lot to play with, but the controls are really intuitive - just don't lose the card that shows what each of the effects are until you're familiar with the amp!
      I have a couple of old tube amps and I'm really pleased with what I'm getting from the Catalyst. I should note, I owned a first-run Tone Master Deluxe as well. The Catalyst doesn't do that specific Fender sound as well as the TM Deluxe, but for less than a third the price it gets REALLY close and it includes other amp models and a slew of really useful effects.
      You should certainly go play one. You won't be wasting your time.@@Phloored

    I did the speaker swap with my Katana and I think it's really worth a try, it started to react and sound more like a conventional guitar amp. My usual problem with the factory speakers in a digital amp is that they a bit dull and missing some punch because of the flatter frequency curve, but the new speakers solved the problem. Try out a few speakers because in the Katana's case the Celestion V-Type worked the best somehow. BTW amazing playing, as always!

    I have heard amp-techs greatly deride the Line 6 Catalyst construction (including other similar amps), effectively dismissing them as throw-away amps that one should not expect to own or function beyond five years. In addition, quality amp models have now become ubiquitous even in entry-level products, and many are commonly available as free plug-ins. A recommendation therefore, should include balancing these factors, especially while considering build quality. Possibly, a modular rig featuring an entry-level modeler, class D pedal amp, and modest cab would provide superior value and flexibility. Cheers~

    • @johnnathancordy
      @johnnathancordy  Рік тому +2

      An entry level modeler would cost as much as the Catalyst, a Seymour Duncan Power Stage costs more, an Orange Pedal Baby costs just slightly less, and a cab is likely to cost almost as much as well? So you'd be looking at easily 2 or 3 times the cost?

    • @BigMikeGuitar
      @BigMikeGuitar Рік тому

      @@johnnathancordy I admit, 60 watts for $300 dollars is tough to beat. If we were matching spec, finding a modern modeler featuring six amps can be had spanning Boss to Zoom for just $100. And a Harley Benton G112 Celestion V30 cab handling 60 watts is only $140. The problem occurs when attempting to source an affordable 60 watt guitar amp, as here the market seems to be sorely lacking. The market goes from a MOOER Baby Bomb 30 watt Micro Power AMP at $110, directly to an outrageous $400-500 price range for 100 watts, with nothing in between. One solution would be a powered PA speaker, such as the Alto TX310 350 watt 10-inch Powered Speaker at $170. That would leave $130 for the modeler. In any case, I think system alternatives could be achieved without exceeding the "2X and 3X the cost" concerns you expressed. I also believe a legitimate takeaway from these considerations is identifying the distinct marketplace need for more affordable pedal-based class D power amp options in the 50-60 watt range. Cheers~

    I've got one and while I find the tone to be quite good I do find it limiting in some ways. With a modeller like this, I would expect to use it on its own. I don't expect to use a pedal board with it. The Katana, for example fills this role.
    With the Catalyst, it can only run one extra effect at a time which is pretty silly. More critically, however, there is NO WAY to put a compressor at the front - even using the one and only effect slot. That's a rather important and silly omission.
    So, it can't be used as a stand alone unit and requires a pedal board or FX processor.
    Given that it costs MORE than the Katana, these omissions are rather strange except to point out the obvious, that line 6 would love if you bought a helix to go along with it.

  • @tomcox875

    They have a few quirks, and I don't believe there has ever been a firmware update to address them. To me it has more character difference between models than the Katana. Very responsive / interactive tone controls. I was looking at some speakers I have lying around yesterday and thinking I should either add an extension jack or try some swapping. I haven't so far because I think it sounds decent as is.

    How does it take pedals in front? I am looking for a combo amp for my dad (turning 70 in a few months) and he's not really one for built-in effects or wanting to deal with all that - the simplicity of stomps and knobs is paramount here, lol. I've had the Catalyst recommended to me, but I really have my reservations about it as a pedal platform. Desired signal chain wouldn't be too crazy - going for Jimi/SRV-ish sort of vibe, your standard old man stuff haha.

    John mentioned swapping the speaker out. Do these amps come with a full range speaker designed for modeled output? Or would the way a “traditional” guitar amp speaker is EQd still be beneficial/suitable?

    Are they all pretty good including Katana or is there a clear favourite for home or gigging use?

      I use a full amp model block instead of just a preamp block and leave out all cabs and IRs in the chain. My last block is a reverb and I can typically get a usable tone when using the Catalyst as power amp in.

      This! I had a katana 50, then a katana 100 MK2, and then the catalyst 60. The catalyst blows the katana away on tone. The only thing that lets it down in comparison is the lack of effects, and the amount you can use at once. However, if you treat it more as a traditional type amp and use pedals to get the extra effects, then the catalyst is a much better amp!

    • @johnnathancordy
      @johnnathancordy  Рік тому +2

      Hey Cody, I actually did a comparison back along on the channel. The Katana is definitely MUCH louder if you need sheer volume, and has a much greater selection of effects. I marginally prefer the cleans of the Catalyst, but honestly the Katana sounded great next to it too
