My theory is (trying to answer the title question) is that they used the show a therapy. Kinda like how Eminem channeled his pain and suffering into his music back in his Slim Shady and Eminem days.
That quiet scene then screaming Rick and Morty did after the "in and out" adventure... (thinking about it... quick in and out + sp*rm shaped ships + giant egg... *sigh*) ANYWAY! was the realist scene I've ever seen in any cartoon or anime and that includes Regular Show that's an 80s nostalgia trip!

Another thing some of us missed, when Rick came out of the machine he was wearing his seatbelt. Usually he doesn't. As a matter of fact, there are few time when he did wear it, another would be after visiting the therapist.
