To control dew on a reflector, I have seen others on YT make a diy dew shield from a neoprene type gym mat with sewn on Velcro. I can’t speak from experience though. Great vid as always. Watch out for stray soccer balls in the parking lot.
Great video, like always! Been loving my Carbonstar. The images it takes and the beautiful dob defraction stars it creates. What a joy! Only time I had to colimate was when I decided to turn the EAF to the side. Overall 10/10, but I love dobs, so I'm a bit bias. Also have the Starizona .75x that I will test out In the near future.
It's definitely been an impressive first look at it for me. One thing is for sure reflector users are really passionate about these scopes and I am glad to be connecting with the community this way. I also love the diffraction patterns these scopes produce so beautiful to look at.
Congrats on the new Newt. In the 70's I ground and built about a dozen Newts up to 12.5". I'm just getting back into the hobby and found everything had changed. It now all refractors, photographic and electronics; it's a different experience. People seem to be afraid of Newts and 'collimation'; I hardly gave it a thought back when, it just wasn't that hard to do (or that critical to be perfect). IDK, I understand Newts tend to be bulkier, but weight wise I bet they're lighter per inch. Hopefully there will be a renaissance for them as nothing substitutes for aperture. Have fun and keep us apprised.
Thanks and thanks for watching this one! Yes it seems newts have quite the reputation. I'm glad I finally decided to try one. I've been wanting to for a long time! That's amazing you have had so much experience with them. I wish you clear skies as you make your way back into the hobby.
Yes and it appears the info on the field illumination chart was accurate. It's very minimal so no issues there. Flats calibrated it out. 4/3 and under probably won't even see it.
The shots are beautiful. I just bought one after seeing your videos, collimation was a breeze. Just curious, where are you mounting the asiair? There is only one dovetail bracket in the scope.
Thanks! I am glad these videos helped. I have a generation one AM5 and I use the bracket on that. I've learned the asir air pro and mini fit there without hitting.
Totally understand. If you are watching this series you will know that this was my very first newtonian and like you I've heard lots of stories of how tempermental a newt can be. In fact I put off buying a newt because of it. It's the reason why I chose the Carbonstar. Apertura made some bold claims that this could also be put in the hands of beginniers because they solved alot of those issues. If you have been with my channel for any period of time you know I like to test manufactuers claims. So far my results have been positive and I've filmed it all here so you can draw your own conclusions. Hopefully this series helps you and I still have a few more videos to do to complete it. Personally I like the scope and has been surprisingly trouble free so far. One thing to keep in mind is if you can help it buy a good quality laser collimator. You want a precision instrument to align these precision mirrors. afterall your photos are only as good as your alignment. So factor in the cost for a good one.
@ Perfect. I will most likely get one. I wonder if the asi2600 pro with the built in 220 guide camera would be a good match to eliminate a guide scope ?
It most certainly would be. I am testing it at it's max sensor size. Essentially I am looking for problems with this scope with the 071MCPRO. OAG's are great but I'm not certain I would use one on a newt even though many people do. I would worry to much about introducing tilt on a newt but having a buit in guider would be nice. I am using a 50mm guidescope in my evaluation and it also is bringing great results.
Sweet! I guess the clouds will hang around a bit longer since you are getting one! LOL at least we know who to blame! Clear skies my friend. Reach out anytime
Not bad at all for an out-of-the-box experience. Definitely far less fiddly than the SharpStar 15028HNT I own. You put a pretty decent load on that focuser, too with the 071 and filter wheel. Did you have to really crank down on the tension screw to keep it from slipping or was it a non factor?
Great question. I am definitely trying to flex the focuser here. When i installed my EAf I saw the focuser did not move so I tighten it to the point where the EAF was able to move it and maybe 2 quarter turns more.
Another great video showing a ver good scope. Lucky you. But as you tried in the past the Askar 103 APO, which one, Askar or this one, is better for you ? I have the impression that the Askar optic is quite better as you gives round stars all around the edges from the beggining. It would be very interesting to compare both of them for optic proposes. Take care.
Great results for such short exposure time. Love your content, I always look forward to your new video drops
Thanks for watching this one and continuing to watch the channel. I appreciate you!
This is the fastest video I’ve ever clicked on. Thanks for the follow up.
A day early too my friend! Hope it was useful in someway!
@ absolutely. I’m convinced to purchase as an early Xmas gift for myself. Happy imaging 😄
Oh nice!! Glad this helped! Happy early Xmas!!
Great video! I got this scope just over a month ago, and I've been loving it ever since it arrived!
Oh nice that sounds really promising!! Thanks for watching this one!!
Great video like always! The only think that i can say is the color of the stars on your final image but it is easely fixable, thanks and clear skyes!
Thanks my friend! Clear skies to you as well!

Nice suggestion I'll look into it! I'll try it does get wild out there!

I just orderd the Carbon Star 150 and it will be here Saturday. It will go with the Carbon Star 8" RC very well.
That’s going to be a great combo!
Carbonstar engineered the 150 around the 1 inch and micro 4/3 sensor. How was the apsc? Any vignetting?
Yes and it appears the info on the field illumination chart was accurate. It's very minimal so no issues there. Flats calibrated it out. 4/3 and under probably won't even see it.
Great first light. Did you say what your exposure data was? Exposure, gain and #of subs? Thanks.
It was 240" x 14 at unity gain 90. Hope this helps
There are specific dew heaters you can obtain for a secondary, Also a dew cap will assist as well
I'll check it out ty!!

You should definitely buy an anti-dew cover for the Newton
Can I control that scope with a tablet instead of a laptop?
Yes for sure but it depends on your equipment. I use the ASIAIR and I am using a tablet to control my equipment
I wanna buy this scope so bad but afraid of setting it up compared to my Askar fra400. Thoughts ?

@ I gotcha. I’m gonna order your same setup next week. Stoked. Thanks !

if you are moving a newt around and not in an observatory, it needs regular collimation

Interesting indeed. Maybe I'll make that happen in the future!
Check out the Astrozap Flexi-Heat Dew Shield For 6" LXD 5 for dew issues on secondary.
I'll check it out!!
