- 🔴 EN Theologos (or "Word of God") was first documented in 1287 by the Byzantine emperor Andronicus II the Palaeologus. The history of the village of Theologos begins in antiquity. Traces of a settlement and a necropolis were discovered on the road between Potos and Theologos, dating from before the VIII century BC.
The road, 10 km long, is good, paved, and meanders along a valley, then climbs the mountain, the village being at an altitude of 220 meters.
The history of the village of Theologos begins with the colonization of the island by the Greeks who came from the island of Paros in the seventh century BC. Then, the island passed, successively, under the occupation of the Persians, Romans, Venetians, Byzantines, Ottomans, being under the attack of pirates many times.
The settlement served as the administrative capital of the island of Thassos until the Ottoman era. The Turks settled here between 1479 and 1538 and since then the village has gradually expanded, comprising two churches and two schools. On March 30, 1813, it was ceded to Egypt and passed under the administration of Governor Mehmet Ali Pasa. In 1912 it returned to the Greeks.
In 1979, ignoring the protests of the inhabitants, the Greek government declared the village a classical Greek settlement. Due to this decision, the owners could not restore their homes, many of them selling them to foreign buyers, mostly Germans and English.
Theologos today has only about six hundred inhabitants, a mountain village, inside the island, sheltered at the foot of the mountains. It has small stone houses, built in the traditional Macedonian style with slate roofs, mixed with Ottoman-influenced architecture. The houses, covered with stone scales, are old, some renovated, others abandoned. The streets are narrow and cobbled and only two main streets.
In our times, the villagers are engaged in beekeeping, tourism, agriculture, small crafts. In addition, they produce olive oil, ouzo, and wine.
