When my ship was in Japan in 1978, my good friend bought the spec 1 pre amp, one of the spec power amps, the best Pioneer tuner, cassette deck and turntable. He also bought Bose 901 series III speakers. He was single. LOL On the way out of Tokyo bay our ship hit a giant rock. We were listening to his system. We ripped the front third of the ship off below the water line and almost capsized. I started unhooking the components and yelled at everybody to set everything down gently on the deck before going to general quarters. Priorities you know! LOL
we have storm "Babet" doing its thing outside here in UK this morning so sat inside with a coffee watching this in the comfort of my home. Thanks Tony this is going to be a good one.
I'm looking forward to this one. I know when you do a restoration for yourself you are more likely to make some interesting choices, like the soft start circuits in this video. Thanks Tony!
@ 25:00 I couldn't help but think, that, after your description of that "start delay" relay circuit, that, it may have caused a slight difference in the L - R channel DC power supply voltages you checked before that. Although it was only a 1 volt difference, that was also with no load, and between the extra wire and relay contacts, that difference would be more apparent under full load.

Va a quedar mucho mejor con las placas de arranque suave que has usado en videos anteriores y sí este es un gran amplificador de potencia, he reparado varios pero los he mantenido originales, tengo el primo hermano de este, que es el Marantz 300DC que es similar en apariencia ya que posee dos VU meter y dos perillas de volumen y también es de 150 vatios por canal, claro la fuente de este es mejor ya que usa condensadores mas grandes, este usa condensadores de 22.000uF mientras que el Marantz usa 4 condensadores de 10.000uF 80 V.

When I was in high school in the '70s I lusted after the SPEC-1/SPEC-2/SPEC-4 components. Of course they were way out of my financial reach. Looking forward to this restoration!
I'm sure they would test pretty good. A lot of them do. If you are doing this restoration/repair on a budget, this would be one of the items you could often leave alone. When they do fail, however, they can damage the rectifiers and in some cases, even the power transformer, due to the huge amount of current the supply can deliver.
Yes indeed, after 'switch on', the capacitors act almost like short circuit as there is no charge. At this point C*dV/dt is very high! I wonder what the initial current is for those milliseconds that initially pass!? One good reason why they carefully select the right fuses. Always a good video Tony!
The Pioneer SX-1050 lists the initial inrush current at 280 Amps, if there were no inrush limiting resistor in-circuit. This is with one transformer and two 22,000 uF caps. The Spec 4 has 2 transformers and 4 22,000 uF capacitors!
@@xraytonyb Wow!, thanks for the feedback Tony. I guess this will be if 'switch on' occurs at the peak of the AC sine wave. Sometime ago I estimated that the peak surge current for one of my 'moderate' amps was about 25 amps, I forget the exact figure.
Wouldn't it be better just to replace the big capacitors with banks of small capacitors split film, surely that eliminates the charging up issue but still holds a good charge and low ESR
1-Bunch of small caps take a lot of room, both physical space and board space 2-with more individual caps chances of failure goes up 3-If one cap shorts out, the entire bank will fail (caps in parallel), if one cap opens the entire bank will fail (caps in series) 4-cost
Good point on the voltage and current an analog meter puts across the test leads. NEVER test the resistance of a phono cartridge or tape head that way. Same goes for low level transformers used in some studio preamps.
Silly comment. I have the same Pentel 0.7 mechanical pencils. I can't say for sure when I bought it. Likely some time in the 80's. (yep, I'm one of those nerds too)
I get what you’re saying, but channels like this and Carlson’s are for learning. Even though I already know everything Tony is talking about I appreciate that it talks through the theory of the work. Shows that he is competent and the main thing is people learn. When I started repairing vintage electronics full time about 10 years ago I appreciated sources like this in expanding my knowledge. If you want a video of solder, solder, solder there are many channels you can go to.

Nice! I had a CTF-1000 cassette deck with the rack handles and a PL-630 turntable that would have looked great with this amp.

My CTF-1000 is long gone. Kept the handles, though!. Still have my PL-570 turntable. Sansui amps, though.
Sadly, I no longer have the CTF-1000 or the PL-630. I do still have an RT-707 but it hasn’t been used in many years.
