- EPISODE 4 A year on from the vanishing of Paddy Moriarty and his dog, is Larrimah falling apart? The Pink Panther pub goes up for sale along with its pet saltwater crocodile “Sneeky Sam”. An inquest reveals new evidence. Police vow to keep looking for the truth.
Here, 10 residents live within spitting distance of each other on a featureless stretch in Australia's remote outback, 500 kilometres down the Stuart Highway from Darwin.
But almost two years on from the day locals first raised the alarm, the disappearance of Larrimah man Paddy Moriarty, 70, and his kelpie Kellie remains a disturbing mystery.
Despite extensive searches, public appeals and a coronial inquest, police appear no closer to unravelling the truth.
Larrimah - already a dysfunctional tangle of disputes and disagreements - is now in a state of disarray.
Long-time local publican Barry Sharpe has sold his Pink Panther-themed watering hole, along with his large pet saltwater crocodile Sneeky Sam.
Up the highway, the Devonshire tea house advertising scones along with buffalo and camel pies remains open, but proprietor Fran Hodgetts says the last year has taken a devastating toll on her health and her business.
There are others contemplating a "permanent break".
Two years ago one man and his dog vanished. But almost all of Larrimah, as it exists now, could be swallowed up in the wake.
Police have interviewed every resident. All say they had nothing to do with Paddy's disappearance.
There are persons of interest being investigated outside of Larrimah.
Each resident has their own theory about what may have happened.
Lead investigator Detective Sergeant Matt Allen is treating it as an unsolved homicide.
While he can't completely rule out misadventure he feels compelled to consider the "worst-case scenario."
"Somebody out there knows what happened to Paddy and Kellie," he said.
"It's difficult for people to keep secrets; often they want to tell someone."
Foul play
There are a lot of ways to go missing in the outback.
Larrimah's remaining residents have had plenty of time to mull them over.
"Wild pigs. Dingoes … crocodiles. There's plenty of ways to get rid of a body, isn't there?" mused the oldest local, Len Hodson, 82.
Such disappearances aren't unknown in the NT - the Stuart Highway fairly vibrates with stories of murder and mayhem.
"It's been going on for years where people have just disappeared off the face of the earth and no one's got an explanation for it," said Larrimah man Barry Burke, who goes by the nickname "Cookie."
According to then-bartender Richard Simpson and other witness accounts, the Irish-born pensioner spent the afternoon of December 16, 2017 at the Pink Panther Hotel.
It's estimated Paddy drank about 10 mid-strength beers over a number of sweltering hours, just a couple of cans above his daily average.
As the sun was setting, he fired up his red quad bike and departed, his kelpie riding shotgun.
A few hundred metres from the pub, in his own home, police say evidence confirms Paddy microwaved some leftover chicken for his kelpie and prepared some frozen dim sims for himself.
And then, with no sign of a struggle or suggestion of a planned exit, the man and his red dog were gone.
If there's one thing that unites the estranged residents of this place, it's that they all believe Paddy is dead, most probably killed.
Why are they so convinced there's been foul play?
To understand that, you have to understand Paddy Moriarty.
And you need to understand an isolated spot where emotions run high, feuds run long, and personalities are larger than life.
Until they're not.
And when something goes wrong, it can go wrong on a spectacular scale.
As publican Barry Sharpe puts it: "10 people live in this town; to my way of thinking, one of them's a murderer."

Paddy mouthed off on that piece of video, saying how bad Fran's pies were , "Even my dog won't eat them". In a small town like that, bad mouthing someone's business can kill that business ... no wonder Fran was so angry about it. I think Frans's "gardener" Owen probably did it, got rid of Paddy and "the dog who wouldn't eat the pies".

Fran the outback Godfather, ordered a scare job on Paddy, Owen went too far and killed him and fed him to the feral pigs. That's why no trace on the crocodile. Murder weapon is somewhere in the bush. Fran and Owen haven't spoken in 3 months either but live on the same property, indicating she knows something about him and doesn't want to talk for fear of being next.

God only knows how he was killed!! I've read so many ridiculous posts on the theory of dumb ppl who think they're all bloody well detective!! AND I've even thought, how he might've been blinnnd drunk!! AND wandered off, after say an argument with 1 of the locals, and just lost his bearings, which d explain y he didn't take his dog with him!! AND just died of thirst moreso than hunger!! Then, had his body eaten by Feral pigs. But!! I'm not saying for a second that that's what happened to him!! Or, a robbery gone wrong!! Because I don't think Poor old Paddy had much money folks!! Paddy moved to Larrimah from a nearby town because the town persuaded (forced) him to move out because of the way he behaves and treats people. I've met people like Paddy before and they don't feel complete without someone to harass and put hate on. I'm sure that he had numerous enemies.

@@davisutton1 Yes I agree. That's why i said that someone from his last town Daly Waters which is 92 kilometres from Larrimah may have got him in Larrimah. Paddy lived on the main road of Larrimah and Daly Waters is the next town so it wouldn't take long for the people from Daly Waters who hated him enough to make him leave his old town to know hes moved to Larrimah. Perhaps someone from the old town payed him a visit in his new town. Just saying it is possible that that could be the case. Best wishes mate. 👍

I would rule out outsiders from Paddy's past because why hide the bodies? Also rule out that he got lost or robbed on that AV while on his land because of the hour. He'd just had his daily 8 beers and at that age you're toast by 6pm, the last hour he was seen. The dinner left in the micro, cash, eyeglasses left behind all indicate he was taken. All these people are older. Even two of them would have a hard time quickly disposing of heavy bodies. So my best guess is: one or more of the many locals he pissed off planned this ahead of time, poisoned the dog while he was at the bar, or took them both by gunpoint in a car to avoid trackers, and shot them by a deeply dug grave. But locals doesn't mean those ten people. He was seen on the doc using one of those fast moving ATV's. He could have recently shoo'd someone dangerous off his land or had plans to buy or sell land of interest to others. Whatever it is, I agree with many that the pie lady is not necessarily behind this. If you read reddit sources he had big beefs with lots of folks and really appeared to be messing with their livlihoods.
Pretty sure it was Owen who then fed both man and dog to the gator. This is how they disappeared w/o a trace....Interesting show, thanks.

That sized crocodile wouldn't be able to eat whole human in a couple of days, even chopped up. Even if it did it wouldn't be active enough to jump up on a fence for the camera. Plus the mess it would of made would be hard to hide.
Pie lady seems okay, normal drama between neighbours, would be their high light of the day fighting.
Pub owner sure blinks alot was being asked questions and don't look to the interviewer when answering. Did paddy owe for his beers? I think he tried to cover his tracks by taking the "hat" and belongings to say it's strange. Probably fed him more drink.

What I find weird is why cameras were filming Paddy when Paddy was still alive. Surely they would turn up after his death.
They did turn up later after he had gone missing.he had been previously filmed by a tv crew

It was said that Paddy lived in Larrimah for 8 years on another doco, Where did he live before that?, and how many friends did he have there?, what are the chances of him being picked up and going back?, and lastly why would you mark off a calendar by putting an X on each day that passes if you weren't looking forward to something?

That ol pie hag offed the guy and the doggie. Had something like that happen around here years ago. Some ol Creole dragon named "Miss Rudolph" had a pahdnuh named Bobaloo done away with. He disappeared near an old, long narrow bridge that was damn near overgrown with bush and vines. There was an old country convenience store called a " memory store" in the local parlance because you went there to pick up stuff when you remembered what you forgot to pick up when you had been in town and gone to Schambeau's in Bayou La Battery. The memory store was called Jenkins Memory Store. Strange things happen in bush country, regardless of country or continent, usually over trivial slights.

For what Paddy did to that little old lady if Owen did sort him out i dont think Owen is a crazed killer but more so a quiet bloke who stood up for the old lady when the police and government had failed to resolve the issue which was always Paddy.
Austraian needs to stop judging people by judges descision. The police and courts have been failing the good people of Australia for a long time. Not always but it certainly happens. Although i would much prefer to live in peace i can see and understand why someone would stop Paddy. I dont see this case as cold blooded murder but more of a Darwin award than anything. He chose his enemy, he seeked his enemy and he underestimated the people he tried to destroy. Theres a difference between standing up for yourself and being a cold blooded murderer. I hope Larrimah has a prosperous, happy and peaceful future without any assholes harassing people within the bounds of the law.
