That is some hilarious pixel art in hachoo👍 Some of those early brawlers were so tragically awful. I just played through Superman the arcade game so I feel your pain. As for best best brawler... SOR Remake is number 1 on my list.
QOTD : When going back as far as 1989 is Streets of Rage still old school. and what is considered new school? If we are talking the best 2d beat em up, then without a doubt, Gsudian Heroes. But if we are going back further than Final Fight, then I might have to go with Target Renegade on the Spectrum as best old school beat em up.
My favorite old school beat em up are the kunio kun games. Was emulating fan translations of them for yrs before they released that kunio beat up collection I also really like the sailor moon beat em up on arcade/snes/ genesis as well as their sequel
My favorite beat em up is Scott Pilgrim Vs the World. Great soundtrack and pixel art. It actually introduced me to Anamanaguchi which is an awesome band. Charlie Murders is another great beat em up which I think needs more attention. I really love its gritty punk artstyle and plays alot like Scott Pilgrim which I like.
Sounds like the set up for an Abbott and Costello joke. "What's the game called?" "Hachoo!" "Bless you. So what is game called?" "Hachoo!" "Bless you. Dang, you're sneezy. What's the game called?" 😉 As for the question, you know already, my answer is Sailor Moon the Arcade Game, so think I'll take that one off the table for this, and say Simpsons The Arcade Game. Both of which, I had a blast playing on MAME, which BTW, saw Hachoo! was on there too.
QotD: Sure, Final Fight and Streets of Rage are cool, but trying to pick out some lesser known good ones - Night Slashers, Armored Warriors and Metamorphic Force are all good picks. Armored warriors can be played legit on the Capcom beat'em up bundle, the other two are as far as I know unreleased outside the arcade to this day... you know what to do!
Yeah this game is awful. Those ending screens are the only thing I remember about it. I frequently would forget the name of the game. QOTD, Favorite beat em up would have to go old school with streets of rage 2.

This is an interesting one I wasn’t familiar with. My favorite is probably the x men beat em up. The turtles games are right there too

Guardian Heroes. Love that game to death on the Sega Saturn!
The double O is pronounced like "oh". The voice on the title screen pronounces it for you.
Oh neat! I've read of this about this one.. .somewhere (it had to have been either Lunatic Obscurity, HG101 or VGJunk but I can't remember), but never looked it up. This is the first time I'm seeing it in action! And it may play badly, but it looks pretty cool for an old-school title, gotta admit. The full-screen cartoonish violence from throwing enemies at the screen really punch up the chunky, retro, Asian kung fu game aesthetic :)
QOTD: I love Streets of Rage 2, but if I'm honest with myself, I've played better old school beat 'em ups since, and since that IS a boring and obvious answer, I'm going to instead officially change my favorite retro beat 'em up to Banpresto & Fill-In Cafe's Panzer Bandit for the PSX. One of those, "WHY THE F*©K HAS THIS NEVER BEEN RELEASED OUTSIDE OF JAPAN!?!" kinda hidden gems. It has such an appealing art style - big ol', well-animated sprites with a 90s adventure anime sort of look to them (Imagine Mega Man Legends character designs done in the style of Marvel VS Capcom 2 and you're close) against these bright, colorful 3D backgrounds. Tons of enemies and particles onscreen as the action heats up. And the combat system is one of those that borrows concepts from fighting games like juggle combos and super cancels to add way more depth to the usual tedious 16-bit variety of brawler. I've not played Guardian Heroes, but a lot of reviews says this is like that game... I _have_ played Treasure's Astro Boy though, and I can confirm based on that games' combos and juggles that, yeah, it probably was inspired by what Treasure does because Astro Boy reminded me of Panzer Bandit :P
Yeah. Sorry SoR2, but I'm officially updating my fave brawler to Panzer Bandit as of today.

QOTD, Favorite beat em up would have to go old school with streets of rage 2.
