  • Well I stumbled upon footage of John's board and the effects he uses for I Guess I Just Feel Like from the 2019 Rehearsal show... that I have had for years in all my files.
Special thanks to my friend Gabe for the incredible footage!

Your videos make my day man. Always showing us that there are some stones still unturned.

The Shin-Ei companion psychedelic machine amplifier. I would go as far as saying I wouldn't be surprised if JM himself borrowed some effects from Josh Scott's collection, they are good friends after all. John's setups always surprise me. For a guy who uses so many effects, he has a setup that is for the most part pretty simple. No fancy switchers or MIDI with most of his pedalboards, just everything in series off to the Lehle splitters.

I have always struggled tap dancing over my pedalboard and im only running 9 pedals, I still don't understand how he manages to pilot that much effects without a loop system

@@Fernando-ry5qt I saw him live last year in MSG and he did A LOT of tap dancing, making me also wonder how he manages so many effects without a looping system. Tap dancing is fine in a studio or bedroom, but man I would struggle with that in a live setting.

There is also John Frusciante, his setup is even crazier than JM's. Idk how he manages his pedalboards.

@@dannyllerenatv8635 I actually stepped over my JHS delay and broke the level knob during a particularly tricky tap dance move some months ago at a bar..... such a tragedy....

This is great stuff man! Keep up the great work. Qq- what guitar pick would you recommend for John's style?

I really like Green Tortex, that’s what Mayer has used in the past. Blue Chip’s are the no-budget option that all my friends who are actual musicians rave about haha

It makes me feel better about my own playing that even John screws up that bend!
I’ve built a super fuzz clone and have been enjoying trying to get the tone. I’ll have to mess around adding some extra pedals now b

Like your videos. Ever think of doing one on a guitar player not named “John” ?

I think JM’s gain stacking with the Companion fuzz is more to do with getting more clarity- old germanium fuzzes can sound great in isolation but get very ‘woofy’ in a band context or sound too ‘dark’ - i know Eric Johnson often gain stacks a Tube-screamer into his fuzz face for this very reason… which adds a ton of mids & removes that low end issue… plus more sustain…imho…

That makes a lot of sense. I really need to try this all out

You are talking about fuzz! To me it sounds like you have never tried to turn a fuzz all the way up and control it with the volume on the guitar. That is why you stack up on another drivepedal.

I thought he might have placed an OC-5 in the psych loop. Maybe?
