One thing I do, is to always wear a sleeved tee or top under my sweaters or blazers. I often see stylist wearing camisoles under their sweaters or blazers and it baffles me. If I wear a short sleeve or long sleeve T or top under my sweater or blazer then that absorbs all the moisture, deodorant, and oils from my body and I don’t have to wash my sweaters or blazers as often. I usually just spot clean them and only have to wash them or dry clean them once a season before putting them away. (Unless of course they get anywhere near the campfire smoke or cigarette smoke or something like that.)

Very helpful to hear your views on this topic. The last section for mums really spoke to me, too. I've recently started to wear my cashmere sweaters around the kids because due to Covid they are ALWAYS there, and after a year of wearing safe, cheap fleece I thought "Sod it, this is my life for the foreseeable, I might just as well wear something I feel good in". I try to take precautions like aprons, but to some degree you also have to make peace with the risk, for the benefit of feeling like you're actually living your life right now, rather than waiting for a different/old/new life in which you wear something nice.

    • @EmilyWheatley

Completely agree Anna!! I think this last year has definitely made us all realize a lot. I love that you're wearing that cashmere now :-) In these times as well it's the simple things, like wearing a nice cashmere sweater, that really goes a long way.

Reminds me of something my Nanna told me when I asked her once, when I was quite young, why she always had her tea in this particular cup mug (a lovely china / porcelain piece that I was always worried I would break!). The sentiment was that every day is special and you deserve to enjoy nice things, aka don't save it for 'good'. We didn't have much in the way of 'things' , so this idea of using something special just because it made you happy was an important lesson.

I don’t deal with the same people everyday and I only work for a few hours. I wore it the whole week whilst working. I hang them to air after. I also started wearing my pretty dresses at home. I hang dry about 80% of my laundry. The only items that go in the dryer are sheets & towels, and socks & underwear. Everything else goes on clothesline I have hung in my basement right beside my washer and dryer. It really does lengthen the life of the clothing! I have never thought about taking the hanger through the bottom of the garment! Good idea! I’ll have to start doing that!! Thanks for the awesome tips! 😊💕

I also hang dry my nicer blouses and shirts. I just think of how hot that drum gets when I have retrieved clothes after a dry cycle. My fingers have gotten burned on the metal zippers and buttons. Clothes are getting scorched hitting that drum or laying on it after finishing the cycle. Clothes are taking a heating and a beating. Hang drying my nicer clothes should prolong their lifecycle. My nicer sweaters dry on a mesh drying rack. My mom used to have a ready made clothesline in the basement. She hung clothes from the overhead exposed copper water line pipes in the laundry room. There were clothes hanging everywhere. It was the ultimate organized closet. We all had our little section of drying laundry. Next to my dryer, I have a small wire hanging bar / shelf for my own version of an indoor clothesline. We had eight kids in our family so she used the dryer for the underwear, socks, towels, jeans and heavier fabric clothes. One trick I do if I have a wrinkled item I want to wear, I will saturate a clean hand towel and throw it and the wrinkled item in the dryer for 10 minutes or so, and the wrinkled garment comes out steamed and wrinkle free.

Great tips! For old stain removal, I swear by a mixture of white vinegar, dish soap & water. Virtually all of my clothes are secondhand; and as you can imagine w thrifted & vintage garments, coming across stains is inevitable. I’ve purchased clothes w stains that are God knows how old but I just spray the spots thoroughly w that solution & then leave them out in the sun for anywhere from a hour to several days (depends how bad it is). Lifts them right off probably 90% of the time!

I almost never machine wash my jeans. I have approximately 8 pr, so it’s not like I wear the same ones all the time. I also will hang them outside sometimes to air out. I only use my dryer for sheets, blankets and towels. Everything else is either hung up, draped over a drying rack, or laid flat. This will extend the life of even a Walmart tee.

I think the "magic" ingredient in that particular brand of fabric spray may be the grain alcohol. A lot of vintage clothing enthusiasts and theatre costumers use vodka to remove odors from clothes. (I haven't tried it myself, so I can't say how it would compare to an essential-oil & water mix.)

I once watched a video before about how to remove set in oil stains from clothing and it totally works. It uses WD-40 which is an oil, and sounds counterintuitive. But spray that liberally on the oil stains and work it through the fibers. Then sprinkle cornstarch to absorb all the oil. As the oil is absorbed in the corn starch keep adding more cornstarch until no more oil is being removed. Then shake off all the corn starch and apply Dawn dish detergent liberally work at through with a brush or toothbrush until the Dawn dish soap works through the fabric fibers. Lastly rinse out the dawn and wash as usual. It works for me every time! I once had on a brand new pair of J Crew light khaki chinos and spilled 1/2 bottle of olive oil down the front. I was nearly in tears. But did this whole process and they looked brand new.

If you take a spray bottle and fill it with ammonia and then add in Dawn until the solution mixes up to a greenish shade, this mix will remove nearly every stain - including blood, which can be a tough one. Has it never been good? or is it more recent? Sometimes the steamer head gets clogged. You can try soaking it in water and vinegar (60/40) and see if that helps. I am in the UK and don't seem able to get the grow spray. It's out of stock on Amazon. Does anyone have any other options they have found works well?

A few people have commented that they use essential oils with water in a spray bottle and have said it's super effective.

I’m always appalled by the way people treat items they paid good money for. Sadly, this is why fast fashion will never die; buy garbage and treat it like garbage. Smh.

Yes, it's very unfortunate! Thanks for your comment Karen!

When I was a visual merchandiser we steamed everything….and customers who saw it wanted to buy one. But of course they never offered the type we had to mere mortals. They were expensive…..but now people pay for these things. Down side? Having to use filtered or distilled water. The handheld one I have at home (Amazon) doesn’t need special water. Just empty out the water after use…and sometimes I forget…still no problems. Best purchase from Amazon ever. Would be so lovely if the water could be scented…but no.

Just a small observation, I think “on y va” would be better than “commencons” I know that’s a literal translation but I don’t think they really say that 🤔

Don’t know if steaming kills bacteria….bacteria thrive in warm moist environment. Freezing may be a better option. Some Jean companies prefer freezing to washing.

Steaming is using water that cooks, so yes it will kill a lot of bacteria

you have a great content, but the mic you use gathers the white noise and its painful to the ears. the pace of the videos is too slow, some less important side notes end up taking a large part of the vid. great potential, just master the details. subscribing and keeping fingers crossed

you could put a gentle background music from the start to make the listening more smooth

Hang them up properly. Keep your clothes off “the chair”…..better yet, get rid of the chair.
