Is this simple radio worth the huge effort it needs? - SBR R1 - Part 1

  • A new patient on the bench, but this time one in near-terminal condition: an SBR R1, a small and simple tube radio, using only 3 tubes.
The big elephant in the room however is the sad state it's in. A huge crack in the cabinet and a ton of rust and dirt on the chassis. Is it even worth still trying to fix this radio? Let me know what you think...

Worth it if you're looking for a project! Nice piece really, even if simple. I'd have to watch me some David Tipton to get my inspirado up for this one! Good luck, and looking forward to seeing how you go with it. Thanks for sharing the content! - jrh

Wow that one certainly is a mess. I think it will be worth it in the end though. It’s not a bad looking cabinet. I think you will be surprised when it’s all cleaned up and that crack is fixed.
Since you have to fix the crack and as it’s not a high value radio, why not paint it a crazy colour?

I could paint it teal and send it to Manuel. He seems to like that color. 😁

I see one more mistake in the schematics: the B+ connection to the plate of the heptode is missing ! 🙂

Correct! I noticed that as well while I was editing the video. You can also hear some hesitation in my voice while explaining that section because I noticed something was off but couldn't really pinpoint it instantly.
There are multiple issues with this schematic...

Yes, a tad crazy.

I think anyone who restores old radios is a little crazy, in a nice way. 🤭
