I went with the 10 Zhumell. Its the same scope. I am glad I got the 10 over the 8 inch but not sure if I should have gone for the 12. The 10 was, lets say impressively large!
I have the AD12 & absolutely love it. However, as a 6'3" guy, i highly recommend building a rolling base that raises the OTA up roughly 10" .. which brings the center of focuser to eye level. Makes for comfier viewing at zenith. Plus you don't have to bend over as low, when doing lower altitude observation. The only other thing, the altitude bearings hit a looser point at some point, in lower elevation ( at least mine does). I'm hunting for ways to improve the braking- if you will; even when cranked down tight it still slips down & off target. Onward to counter weights. I would invest in vibration dampener pads for the feet (if on a deck).
Hahaha, that's super sweet.... That was exactly my reaction and excitement when I received my 12" dob last week (1st telescope... I have been waiting 40yrs for this moment). Mine is the Celestron Starsense... Similar enough!
The 30mm superview is a very light 2" eyepiece. A proper well corrected one will be much larger and heavier, but worth it for the views. Only the center half of the superview will be sharp at f5, even if there also wasn't coma to deal with, but there is that as well.

Beautiful scope! When I had this the first thing I did was replace the collimating screws with Bob’s Knobs. There much bigger and makes collimating easier. Also get a Cheshire with cross hairs. If you want to then also try Morpheus eyepiece. Great eye relief and awesome field of view actually measured at 78° (much more than what Morpheus states!).

I ordered this exact scope and it's ungodly how excited I am. I'm also a little frustrated though because we ordered it around mid October and it's currently January 6th, so that's always fun. I've been scouring UA-cam for videos of it to get myself even more excited and see what I should be expecting. It's very sad but very exciting at the same time, strange feeling. Watching your video made my day, as others have mentioned it was sort of like watching a kid open their Christmas presents on Christmas Day! :-) only thing I would add to your video as a caveat is you want to make sure that you don't set the telescope down on its end it's better to open it up while it's laying on its side less chance putting pressure on the screws that achieve the collimation. Other than that though I'm very very much enjoying the video thank you very much for posting it I realize this is a couple years ago but I had to put my two cents in because it just came up on my UA-cam feed. Great job and a lot of fun watching it too! :-)
Finally had my first night out with it last night and the views were amazing. I have a bit more tweaking to do on the secondary mirror if I want sharp magnified views, but I am impressed!
I have the same ad12. It would not keep culmination. I finally found the screws in the clamps that hold the primary mirror to the base were loose. I had to take the mirror out of the OTA to get to the screws to tighten them. But I love the scope. Just wish it had tracking.
I noticed a bit of movement in the primary when moving the altitude of the scope. I haven't done what you did yet, but in the meantime when I collimate I do it when the scope is at a 45° angle. That way horizon to zenith it remains close to collimated. Will probably tighten the primary clamp screws this weekend. I love this scope though, has been the best purchase I've made in years.
@@AdirondackAstronomy yeah I love it too. The tracking is the only drawback. When im with a group of people who want to look through it I have to keep adjusting it every few people
It can definitely be a bit of a drawback for groups of people. I haven't had that opportunity yet with this scope. Any chance you could try to get whoever is looking through the eyepiece to recenter the object before the next person?
GSO optics are consistently diffraction limited (1/4 wave peak to valley). To get this level of precision anywhere else you will pay much more. Any 12 inch premium mirrors at 1/4 wave you will pay more than $2000 JUST FOR MIRROR and not telescope body. Of course GSO glass is just BK-7 which is fine but it will change shape more when it is cooling at the night time.
Nice scope, unfortunately the inside of these tubes are shiny, if you put a 8 inch square piece of flocking material opposite the focuser that should help boost the contrast especially when viewing bright objects like the moon. Enjoy

You mounted the eyepiece rack upside down. The screws are not supposed to show when it is mounted, and it will look cleaner the other way than how you have it mounted now.
Mine arrived yesterday and just got around to opening it. Two of the four screws than Hold the upper mirror assembly came loose and fell out in transit. I found one of them in the box buy not both. Nothing seems to be damaged but I have no idea. This is kind of a rocky start.
I was going to buy an Orion XT8 Plus then talked myself into the Orion XT10 Plus, but after seeing the Apertura AD12 is a MUCH better price /value and the build quality of the base is better, I will be getting the Apertura AD12. Thanks for the video.

Hi Mike,i think i had as much fun watching this as you did unboxing it!..i have an 8 inch dob which is great but i`m looking to upgrade to a 12 inch the same as you have..only its labelled as a Stella Lyra dob...identical to yours in every way!..this video at least gives me some scale as to what a beast it is ! i want one lol..even with these cloud ridden UK skies. keep us posted with a review on it buddy please..are you gonna raise the base so the focuser is in a more comfortable position for you to view?..i have a water butt stand which my dob sits on,this tends to be what other dobbers use..anyway great video my friend i have subscribed.
I still plan on making a review of this scope, its been amazing. I've just wanted a few good nights with it to better review it. I plan on making a small platform with leveling legs for the base to rest on, but I recently purchased a proper observing chair for comfortable sitting at the eyepiece. I might attempt to do that this coming summer. Haven't noticed any issue with the inside being too reflective unless looking at the moon, but couldn't hurt to modify it a bit.
Hey thanks for the response and for checking out the video. Sorry about rushing through that step, I should consider making a video on collimation, but I still find it to be one of the most difficult part of owning a newtonian. So the laser is inserted where the eyepiece goes and then you turn on the laser and it should bounce off the secondary, the the primary, back up to the secondary and out to the eyepiece/laser pointer. Based on where the laser is you make adjustments to the primary mirror until the red dot is centered in the laser collimator. Collimating the secondary is the hardest part and I still don't have an easy method for that yet. If you have any further questions let me know I will do my best to answer.
I have a similar 12 inch Dobsonian BT301-B. I have been given no bearing instructions at all. Wonder could you share what your bearing instructions are
I don't remember there being any specific bearing instructions, but if you go to the highpoint scientific website and search for apertura ad12 you can download the instructions and see if they help you find your answer. This telescope didn't ship with instructions and recommended downloading them from the website.

Given that information I would go with whichever one is the better price for what you get. When I purchased this telescope I got it with the add ons and it was still cheaper than other competitors telescopes without the add ons.
This is just my from personal observations: The Apertura AD12 gives you more aperture for your dollar. Compared from 8 inches in aperture from the Celestron 8SE, the AD12 has 4 more inches in light gathering power. Not to mention the AD12 is running at $999 on High Point Scientific while the 8SE is running at $1300 on Amazon. You've also mentioned "fancy electronics" and indeed the 8SE has a computerized go-to function while the AD12 is more manual use, such as star hopping. As for quality of DSOs and planets, you're expected to get amazing views nonetheless. Even my Celestron C5 I use primarily still gives me clear, crisp observing. I expect anything bigger will give you that and see more fainter objects. Depends if you want to spend more for less aperture but go-to capabilities (8SE) versus bigger aperture but manual use (AD12). Not to mention, the AD12 (86lbs) weighs more than the 8SE (33lbs), one can be taken apart and is portable friendly (8SE) and the other is a solid tube and heavy for travel (AD12). So it really comes down to personal preference. Do take some time and research what sounds good for your environment and needs. I wish you clear skies on your future scope!
I am curious as I have the same scope, do you notice that the main mirror collimation moves depending on where the scope is pointed? I ran some experiments with a laser collimator, and depending on the altitude, the alignment goes out, indicating the main mirror moves. I replaced the springs, still notices.
I did notice that issue when I collimated the scope the other day. I am wondering if maybe the springs on collimation screws aren't stiff enough and the movement of the scope makes the mirror move slightly? Definitely something I'm going to look into during this cloudy weekend coming up. I'll be sure to keep you posted if I figure it out. I might also check to make sure that the focuser isn't moving too.
The tube weighs around 48lbs (22kg) and the base weighs 38lbs (17kg). The hardest part about carrying the tube is the length. Some people have made handles to make carrying their dobsonians easier and I'm considering doing that with this. The base has a handle attached which makes carrying that a lot easier.

Apertura Dobs are beautiful scopes. I have the AD8.
You will want to put some felt or soft velcro glued on top of the hard velcro, to dampen the azimuth as it can weathervane on just the rollers

Nice video but you rush through the collimation check. What exactly are you looking through when the red spot seems to coincide with the moon?

Definitely something I'm going to look into during this cloudy weekend coming up. I'll be sure to keep you posted if I figure it out. I might also check to make sure that the focuser isn't moving too.

How hard is to cary in hands?
The tube weighs around 48lbs (22kg) and the base weighs 38lbs (17kg). The hardest part about carrying the tube is the length. Some people have made handles to make carrying their dobsonians easier and I'm considering doing that with this. The base has a handle attached which makes carrying that a lot easier.
From which site did you buy it? and how much?
I got the scope from Highpoint Scientific. I believe they might be the only place that sells Apertura, but it is the same scope as the Zhumel brand.
