I look forward to trying this genre out! Thanks so much for the recommendation. I’m currently reading through Legend of the Galactic Heroes by Tanaka right now.
I am enjoying it! It’s translated from Japanese so sometimes the writing is a little clunky but I really like the incorporation of historical military strategies to outer space 🪐 I’m reading book 5 now.
Great reviews! It has been many years since I read Forever War and Old Man's War; feel like I have to revisit these as I used to call them some of my favorites. Your take on Starship Troopers is diffferent. Even some of Heinlein's biggest haters like Starship Troopers, so it was refreshing to hear your honest take. I read Moon is a Harsh Mistress last year and haven't moved to pick up another.
Thanks Renko, those two were definitely enjoyable. I did think that I could alienate some viewers by saying what I thought about Starship Troopers but ultimately that's how I felt.
Jack I love that your subs jumped so much, I think the algorithm loves top 10 lists. 😀 I think you mentioned Ender’s Game is on your TBR. That military scifi book was so good the US Navy & Marines teach it at their academies!! I enjoyed the audiobook.
It's been nice to see the support and interest! I do indeed have a copy of Ender's Game which I haven't got around to just yet but will definitely read it. I was actually going to mention it in the video but I forgot... maybe there will need to be a part two at some point.
I haven't read Starship - not sure I will. Got about 5 chapters into The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Heinlein and couldn't finish it. Interesting ideas but baffling execution. I like both Forever and Old - but I would definitely put Old at the top. Liked the ideas and execution more, but I do agree with you that the middle of the book is muddled. Great video - keep it up!
Yeah Heinlein certainly seems to divide opinion but I'll give his other books a shot. I don't think there is much separated Old Man's War and The Forever War for me, both pretty good. Thanks for watching!
Well, you should add Michael G. Thomas, or Rick Partlow's Merchants of War as his books are action packed. Ryk Brown... Aurora CV-01. Or David Webber's Honor Harrington on Basilisk's Station. Joshua Dalzell. .Omega Rising. BV Larson, The Swarm.
@@SciFiFinds😂 Well, Honor Herrington holds a First Place, but Rick Partlow's writing is nail biting and authentic he is a Vet. The Omega Force books by Dalzell are equal to Webber's Harrington series given there action depth of character development and humor. One of the other treats is BV Larson his Undying Mercenaries Series of books are complete for stand alone stories but hold given themes in each new tale by the cast of recurring characters. And has a certain hedonistic humorous quality all their own. So, it's hard to go wrong with any of them. I read from a list of about 40 authors. Campbell's Dark Fleet books are also excellent reads. Partlow's for me as a Military Brat just ring true on levels hard to explain. Though that's not a criticism of the others they too have that quality. It could just be I heard those same words and thoughts up close and personal growing up.
Not read the third book you cover - but do hold The Forever War as being excellent - first read it well over 40 years ago - so there's time dilation for you! :-)
Old Man's War has one of the best opening two pages to any novel I've read, I generally say if it doesn't hook you by then you either have no soul or no curiosity, or both. (I'm sure there are people who genuinely still bounce off it though.)
Of the three books I've read Old Man's War and the forever war. Its been some time, but I think I would put the Forever at the top of my list after Old. I really enjoyed Old, but think it could have explored its concepts in more depth, and some of the characterisation was lacking. I tried Scalzi's follow-up books which did not improve for me. I suspect if, or when, I return to Forever I will find new depths to my reading that I missed all those years ago. Though not MilSCiFi Methuselahs Children (Heinlein ) has some parallels with Old. Thanks.
Sounds like you're mostly aligned with me on these opinions then Mark. I would say though that this subgenre is probably not exactly for me since I didn't really love any of these books and they aren't really close to cracking my top 10. Maybe there are some lesser known ones that would so I'll hold out for some recommendations

Thanks for watching! I am going to look that one up because of I haven't heard of it. Is it good so far?

What an insightful comment. I'll definitely check those out and see if I can find them in the wild here.

Eye spy with my little eye a PS5 behind you which means you've surely played Helldivers 2 considering your first book in this video?!
Good eye but I haven't played it. It does look great though, do you recommend it?
Enders game would be #1
I am reading that shortly and will be discussing it in an upcoming video
