To smooth out the back-combing without losing height, you should try a brush with soft nylon bristles (NOT the kind with little balls on the end!), and use the edge of the brush to smooth the top part of each layer while holding it vertically. Drop the hair gently, and use the edge of the bristles again lightly to shape. If you do this a few layers deep (starting with the bottom layer), you can get really smooth, voluminous hair, without that rough, ragged look that a comb can yield. Back in the '60s everyone had a brush with nylon bristles!
