Native Egyptians are tan/brownish, but the Egyptian Empire had Assyrians (Syrians), Greeks, Nubians (Ethiopians and other groups around there, and other dark-skinned folks). But otherwise the Sahara acted as a natural obstacle that largely kept sub Saharan Africa cut off from the rest of the world for a long time until maybe last 400 years.
