GREAT video! I'm new to Penn baitcasters, as I was a freshwater fisherman until buying a 21 foot walkaround last year. Picked up 5 Penn reels, three Baymaster 180's and 2 Peerless No. 9's on a local marketplace web site for a steal. With your help, I was able to service all of them (they are in amazing shape) but I had one Baymaster with an eccentric lever that was hard to move (felt like I was forcing it.) Took it apart with your help and greased everything (lot of buildup around the eccentric gearing and I don't think the spring was in correctly.) Put it all back together and it's perfect and smooth. The anti-reverse dog spring was a tough one, but your other video with the close-up (and the trick with the lower screw to hold the dog) made it much easier. Thanks for great videos! Hi Dennis. I picked up one of these reels up from a second hand shop for about 120Rand( close to about 8 Dollars). Which is a real steal. Anyway, I took it apart yesterday, and everything was going great until I reassembled it. There was a problem with the anti reverse dog and that little spring. Thanks to you I managed to get it all back together. Thank you so much! Im looking forward to using it soon. Great thanks from South Africa William
hi dennis thanks again for your amazing videos. im completely addicted to cleaning up and rebuilding these old reels. i recently purchased a bucket of old penn reels for some quarantine fun. many of the models i havent seen before including one of these 180s. i want to ask about what is best to spoon these reels will. the old lines on them are of various types. i find 3 strand twisted cotton, and what i think is called "squidding line" which is very soft and lays kinda flat, and other styles too. also, i actually found that my 180 has 4 different sized side plate screws. 4 long for the handle side cross members, 4 medium for the clicker side cross members, 2 short for the handle side reel seat, and 2 even a little shorter ones for the clicker side reel seat. thanks again! paul
I would use mono-filimant. The old linen braid is obsolete and the modern braid may be abrasive to the finish so mono is the best way to go in my opinion - Thanks for asking - Dennis
Nice little reels. Got one off ebay a few months ago not nearly as good shape. Mine was probably made in the 1940s, it has engraved scenery on the tail plate.
I imagine it is. The there are a few early tell tales. The engraved side plates and the handle that looks like bone are two. The flat dog spring ( internal) is another. All of these were updated over time. - Thanks - Dennis
I enjoy your video's on reel repair. You have helped me, and many others, by sharing your knowledge and skills on the various reels. The Bay master 180 is very similar to the Penn Sea Boy. These reels seem to share the same components and parts. Was the Sea Boy a replacement for the Bay master and the Long Beach 60? Thank you again.
There are a lot of Penn reels that share the same design and parts. The 155, 160 and 180 have the same internal parts, just different frame widths. The 150 and 200 Surfmasters and the 140 Squidder are essentially the same inside. The Long Beach, DelMar and SeaBoy share most parts. Each was a different model for different types of fishing or price points for selling, but you are correct, many of the internal parts are the same - Dennis
Hi Dennis, As always, another great maintenance video. I have recently bought a Penn 180 L BAYMASTER. Is this reel similar to a 180 BeachMaster as seen in this video?
No. These reels gon't have the room inside to make the modification. These are built tough as a medium duty reel. Meant for 2-10 pounders and not much more. - Dennis

Hi Dennis,
As always, another great maintenance video. I have recently bought a Penn 180 L BAYMASTER.
Is this reel similar to a 180 BeachMaster as seen in this video?
Yes - they are the same, You can use this video to service the reel. - Dennis
Wow tiny drags on this model. Do people hot rod these like the Penn model 10s?
No. These reels gon't have the room inside to make the modification. These are built tough as a medium duty reel. Meant for 2-10 pounders and not much more. - Dennis
Como puedo obtener el plano de este modelo
go to Mysticparts.com and click on the penn parts/conventional reel tabs. Find your model in the listing and you can get the schematics - Dennis
What's the difference between the 180 L and the 180 BAYMASTER ?
The "L" designation indicated an Aluminum spool. The rest of the reel is the same - Dennis
