Goal Achieved (Finally!) - I Bought A House

- I can't quite believe I'm making this video today - all the saving and planning finally paid off - I Bought a House! Just wanted to share a few details with you as I know some of you have been kind enough to ask how things were going.

Over the last few years, I've come to the realisation that whilst a certain level of material things do add to your life, more stuff will not necessarily make you happier. This realisation hit me when I looked around my home that was filled with stuff (so much so I felt I needed a bigger house) and couldn't say I was particularly happier than when I lived in Spain (in 2008) when everything I had with me fit in one large drawer and a very small wardrobe.
These days I prefer to adopt a buy less, buy better approach, with a focus on quality over quantity, removing the clutter, and utilising my money in the best way possible.

Awww thanks Sara. Yes I know it’s taken me much longer to get there than friends who are buying with a partner etc, but in many ways it feels rather fabulous that it was all my work, all my savings. 😊 I can’t imagine I will leave here for some time unless the call of the rural countryside finally wins! X

I don’t know all of them unfortunately. I’d love to find out a little more about the earliest inhabitants. I’ve got a few names from old church registers that I need to investigate further. One of the bedrooms would have been for a staff member so I’d love to know who they were too.

Congratulations! I bought my own house last year and I’m very much enjoying it. Refurbishing was stressful, especially as a single woman. But now it’s almost my dream home, there are a few jobs to be do for a joiner and I need to redo the downstairs toilet to make it nicer, I’m saving money for those jobs. I am doing now a low buy/no buy to pay back my debt that I got myself into because of the house but I’m positive that it will be cleared within next year and it’s still the best thing I’ve ever done.
Congratulations to you too! I bet you feel a wonderful sense of satisfaction now you almost have it just as you want it. I’ve found no buys so useful for focussing the mind to save aggressively for periods of time - god luck with it! X

Wonderful , that’s great news, you are an inspiration, I am going to try a no buy for 3 months , I am already using up all my sewing stuff.
That’s one side benefit I really appreciated of not shopping. I managed to use up an awful lot of things that I had over purchased in the past, was a nice way of decluttering without feeling wasteful.
Hats off to you for saving intensely for 3 years! you should be very proud. So happy for you that it paid off and you got your first home xx

Congratulations 🥳 so pleased you have found the home you love and will cherish. The pandemic and lockdowns gave me time to re-assess my environment, and make the decision to move to house with more internal space and less outdoor space. A combination of now working from home and wanting to be less isolated, plus seeing that if I changed area I would get more for my money, led me to decide to move. I decluttered a little every weekend in small steps (one wardrobe, one cupboard, one drawer a day) so by the time my buyers came along, I only had what I was taking with me, which was a huge help. The pandemic taught me I don’t actually need much day to day, and that I had far too much. It made me happy to know the items were going wheee they would be used and loved, and not just sit in the loft or a drawer for years. Anyway, again congratulations. Stay safe and well. Thanks :) The pandemic and the lockdowns definitely made a lot of us do a bit of soul searching I think. I had always hoped to move rural, but realised where I was previously, I was miles from anyone (no one I could visit or meet without a 30-40 car journey) and I felt very isolated, but without the benefit of the countryside I love! I realised, that for now at least I wanted to be closer to some family and friends. You are absolutely right in regards to realising we don't need as much as we think - and being stuck inside with all that unused stuff wasn't much fun either!

Hi Kirsty and happy new year to you! Congratulations on the purchase of your home and thank you for being kind enough to do this video to share with us. I found your channel due to wanting to have a low buy 2022 to help me purchase my own home (I have a really good deposit saved but as you mentioned in the video property prices and bidding wars keep escalating so it is difficult and I want to do more to increase my savings in order to keep up) so I would really appreciate if you do find the time to do another video based around how your no buy experience contributed to you being in a position to purchase and if there were any struggles along the way or hurdles that you encountered that may have made you think twice about whether or not it was the right thing to stick to or if your goal to purchase a property outweighed everything else and kept you on track. Good luck with your no buy! It really did help the amount of savings I had towards a deposit. I'm not really sure there is enough valuable information about the purchase in relation to my no buy for another video other than I managed to save more than I thought possible - I was really committed to purchasing a home and with prices rising I knew I needed as much funds as possible so I wasn't really tempted to stop saving although of course at times it wasn't easy to walk away from things I wanted. That said I knew that owning a home meant more to me than any holiday or product could so I stayed the course.

Pretty boring stuff really, cut out processed food, cooked from scratch, focussed on healthy ingredients, massively reduced sugar, and stuck with it. It wasn’t hugely fast but worked and gave me a base that I just carry on with now that means I don’t tend to fluctuate.
This is my dream. To buy my own house. ❤
